Biko Baker & Jasiri X Talk about Obama, Voter Suppression & How to Fight Back

Biko Baker of the League of Young Voters and Jasiri X of One Hood are no joke when it comes to politics and youth activism. Both over the past couple of years have been extremely successful in bringing attention to critical issues effecting our communities and more importantly, getting folks to do something about them.  Whether its police brutality, economic disparities, education inequality or Voter Suppression, you can count on brothers like these to be knee-deep in the mix..

Last week during the Pacifica Radio live coverage at the DNC in Charlotte, NC myself and Margret Prescod  of KPFK in LA sat down and spoke with these 2 brothers who live in so-called battle ground swing states (Wisconsin and Pennsylvania) to talk about the voter suppression efforts underway in their states  and how they been fighting back.

We also spoke to them about the type of impact or lack of impact  President Barack Obama has been having on the folks they work with and why.. We also looked at the types of strategies and voter education efforts they are working on to turn folks out to polls come this November..

Peep our conversation below

Our Interview w/ Green Party Candidates Jill Stein & Cheri Honkala

Jill Stein and Cheri Honkala
Green Party Candidates

During our Pacifica Radio coverage of the (DNC) Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, NC, we got a chance to talk w/ Jill Stein and Cheri Honkala of the Green Party. What they had to say was insightful and pretty much on the mark as we covered a wide range of issues including poverty and the lack of discussion around it during the DNC..

In terms of what it means for them to run, when they are virtually ignored by the mainstream press speaks volumes. It shows just how controlled and embedded the press which was once deemed the 4th Estate is when  it comes to elections.  When we did this interview we were right next to dozens of the top radio shows in the country. They were known to everyone, but ignored. The international press did interview them. It was bizarre to see the blatant omission..

Anyway hear what these two women have to say and decide for yourself what direction you wanna take come this November. co-hosting w/ me on this interview is Margret Prescod of from our sister station KPFK in LA

Reporting Live from the DNC in Charlotte Day 2: Michelle Obama Rips It

There’s lots to say about whats going down here in Charlotte at the DNC. There are scores of protests… key word ‘scores’. More people are up in arms and stomping the pavement then they were in Tampa Bay..

Yesterday alone, there was a huge protest and counter protest at Planned Parenthood. There was a big march bringing attention to the plight of prisoner Bradley Manning. While people were kicking up dust about this man who they consider a hero and ultimate whistle blower, my co-host Mark Bebawi was inside the Convention Center, talking to delegates about Manning’s plight and was astonished to see how oblivious folks inside were to him. many didn’t know who he was, others didn’t care. the few that did know him touted the party line that he should be locked away.

There was a big Occupy March against Capitalism.. There was a March against the War led by War Veterans. There is a separate conference featuring progressive Democrats where you’d see everyone from Jesse Jackson to Keith Ellison to former congressman Alan Grayson to Raul M. Grijalva. All this has been happening in the pouring rain

There was a march and demonstration around the plight of undocumented students…where people should note, that as the DNC celebrated the rise of Latino politicians like keynote speaker San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro who gave a rousing speech that led to folks giving a standing ovation, outside the doors of the convention in front of the entrance, 10 undocumented students were arrested. Actress Rosario Dawson stood with the crowd as this went down in support. She held up a big sign that said Undocumented.  Will they be deported? We don’t know..

As all this was going down outside, many were getting into the speeches and there were some really good ones. Many liked what Newark mayor Cory Booker had to say.. Massachusetts Governor Duval Patrick got people fired up.. But where people went absolutely nuts and where it was unbridled pandemonium was when First Lady Michele Obama hit the stage. Her speech was one for the ages.. People didn’t just hear her they felt her. They felt her in a big way..I heard over and over again that Michele’s speech took folks back to 2008 when folks were excited about the possibility of making history with the election of the country’s first Black president.

Michele Obama left folks feeling proud.. For women who have felt been under assault by weeks of rhetoric on the campaign trail about ‘legitimate rape’ policies of GOP, Michele was a welcome breath of fresh air. For Black women she was a source of pride, someone who erased all the nasty stereotypes and bad images constantly being hawked and elevated in the form of shows like Basketball Wives and other Reality shows on network TV.. In fact one sister a radio personality, SkyyHook tweeted ‘Ladies, this is what a REAL wife looks like.. No Fighting, No Throwing chairs or Jumping on tables… Class and humility’.. That tweet was generously passed around.

I don’t wanna go on too long about Michele Obama, but I must because her speech was a really big deal for the thousands here in Charlotte. She got people fired up and for the moment, she got folks forgetting the concerns and criticisms people have raised about her husband’s policies.

For the moment folks forgot about drone strikes, and the continuation of Bush war policies.. For the moment people forgot about record number foreclosures, mass deportations and the cozy relationship he has with Goldman Sachs and other Wall Street entities…That’s how energetic and impactful that speech was.. People wanna feel good at the end of the day. People wanna believe at the end of the day.. Michele Obama made that happen last night.

There’s lots more to say about the DNC here in Charlotte including how diverse it is which is a good thing and a much welcome contrast to what we experienced in Tampa Bay. It’s also very disorganized and in many ways just straight up janky, but we’ll save that for another report. In the meantime the word of the day is Michele.. Will Barack Obama be able to move people in the same way?? We’ll see on Thursday..

Virginia Gov and DNC Chair Tim Kaine Says Times Are Changing in Texas

Gov Tim Kaine

Gov Tim Kaine

Is Texas about to turn Blue? If you ask most people outside of the Lone Star state they’ll look at you in disbelief and start laughing. After all when you have a governor who runs around declaring he’s gonna have the state secede from the union, who could take such a notion seriously? Antics like the one Governor Rick Perry pulled make for great TV and water cooler talk, but unfortunately it’s put the state in a bad light and made us a laughing stock. This has angered many within the state.

Fortunately Rick Perry is not your typical Texan. He represents a small mindset from the past which is soon to be overshadowed by a new energetic growing population that is increasingly young, increasingly people of color and increasingly left leaning in its politics. We are in a state that that for so long has been solidly red but is now purple and about to go blue. People who really know what time it is are taking note.

Earlier this year we caught up with former DNC chair Howard Dean and he told us that he saw Texas changing for the ‘better’ within the next few years. Virginia Governor and current DNC Chair Tim Kaine came to Austin the other night along with a large contingent of DNC folks and underscored Dean’s assertions. He gave an inspring speech as he talked about what took place in his home state of Texas and what he sees coming down the pipe. It was clear to him that ‘times were a changing’ and folks better get ready to make room at the proverbial blue table. Kaine said he and the DNC will be doing everything they can to make this happen. Kaine noted that 2010 will be the state’s political superbowl and when all is said new sheriff in town and her name is Texas..If everything continues to grow as predicted, the only thing Red in texas will be raw meat.

Check out this video to hear just how serious Governor Kaine was as he put forth some very inspiring and hope
