Sadly we have yet another troubling incident with police.. This time we have cell phone videos showing officers restraining an unarmed man who attempted to barricade himself in a store.. He’s shown being restrained by one officer, while another officer with a heavy baton beats him at least 10 times.. The man became unresponsive and later died.. The officers who remain unidentified are on administrative paid leave..
This troubling video comes two weeks after 8 Kern County Sheriffs beat an unarmed man named David Silva to death. An autopsy was released the other day saying the man died from a heart attack and not the beatings by 8 officers.. It’ll be interesting to see what sort of excuse is used for this beating in Sacramento..
All this comes on the heels of police officers shooting 26 year old Amos G Smith 8 times in the back of the head right here in the Bay Area.. This took place in Union City which is 20 miles south of Oakland..You can read about that HERE
I’ll say this as I did in the past, folks who organize around this need to push to make sure whenever there is allegations of police terrorism and abuse that there is a department completely separated from law enforcement that does the investigation.. That means the DA, the Coroner etc are not in the loop in any way.. Police routinely work with these individuals and departments and thus the relationships seem to compromise any sort of objectivity…
Also folks especially in Cali need to push and push hard to end the Policeman’s Bill of Rights which give cops damn near immunity to anything they do.. It keeps their names hidden from the public as well as their records.. So in the case of the 8 officers who beat the man to death in Kern County or the 6 officers who shot at two women delivering newspapers 100 while they were searching for renegade officer Christopher Dorner or in this recent incident in Sacramento, we have no way of knowing if they have history of abuse.. The Policeman’s Bill of Rights keep that hidden..The PBOR was enhanced and made more airtight last year..
As we close out its important to keep a close eye and hold these public servants who we give a badge and a gun accountable..While we have these disturbing incidents of brutality, we also have abuse of power as we are now seeing was the case with Boston Police, who everyone hailed after the Boston Marathon Bombing.. people cheered and toasted these officers for their work, while never questioning why they used 9 thousand officers to go searching door to door for one 19-year-old kid door to door..
We are now discovering that the elite unite within Boston Police known as BRIC.. were busy surveilling peace activists and anti-war demonstrators and wound up ignoring warnings about the two brothers, one who was on a terror list.. They became obsessed with with smashing down on citizens doing peaceful protest to the tune of millions of dollars versus following up on serious threats..In fact one of the people the Boston Police kept spying on wound up being a hero who helped saved lives during the bombing. His name is Carlos Arredondo a well known activist in the area.. Read about that HERE

It’s always a pleasure to speak with long time activist and good friend of HKR (Hard Knock Radio) Lee Jasper, former advisor to the Mayor of London. His keen insight and political acumen is a breath of fresh air as he helps folks on our side of the pond (the States connect with the realities ad challenges facing our folks over in the UK and throughout Europe. In our latest exchange, Lee pulls no punches as he lays out the brutal reality of life for many Black folks in London and the complexities surrounding this latest incident.. Peep our interview below while you read his column..Black Youth, terrorism and the moral blindness
The brutal killing of the young British solider Lee Rigby on a British High Street in Woolwich South London by religious fanatics was deeply shocking. The fact that such a savage and grisly attack can take place on a busy British street in broad daylight has left the nation numb with shock and bewilderment.
In 2004, I was interviewed by the London Evening Standard on this issue, I highlighted the fact that religious fanatics, claiming to be Muslims were targeting disaffected black youth in Lambeth to their cause. Their experience of racism and injustice perceived by black boys, their sense of powerlessness makes some of them, particularly vulnerable to such perversion.
Young black men excluded by racism within education and from the labour market, unable to get jobs, who can’t afford to go to college or university, are harassed by the police force that brutalises and criminalises black men, and who face the grave injustice of a criminal-justice system that dishes out disproportionately heavy sentences to black men.
Everyone is buzzing about Bronx rapper Tim Dogg and whether or not he’s alive or if he faked his own death..A warrant has been issued for arrest, as authorities are seething, saying Tim faked his own death to avoid paying a women he swindled for 32k..If this woman was hustled, I feel bad for her, but I gotta be honest, I could give a rats ass about Tim Dogg… What I’m concerned about is that authorities in our beloved country will go all out to look for him, bring him back from ‘the dead’ and arrest him for unpaid bills..
We have Wall street crooks who are alive and well who have scammed millions of students on über high-priced student loans, which has led to not only another economic bubble, soon to burst and destined to cause widespread financial meltdown, but will also keep students in debt for lifetime..The student loan debt is greater than all our other debts combined.. The people behind those economic atrocities are alive and well and instead of being arrested, they been given sweet heart bail out deals and protected from prosecution.

Now there’s a lot to unpack here..Over the past few years we’ve had militias and armed Tea Party folks show up to the White House lawn with guns talking reckless about President Obama and nothing happened except maybe the IRS looked at taxes and you see where that’s gotten us/
During the Democratic Convention some guy showed up and drove around Charlotte with a effigy of Obama being hung.. There was no arrests or anyone sent to jail, even though it was disturbing and highly offensive. If this is happening now, whats gonna be the rules everyone has to follow to avoid jail time? Don’t reference a recent bombing? Don’t talk greasy about the President unless you’re a deranged Senator or Congressman or Tea Party member? Will the net of jailable offenses be expanded to include forbidding one to talk about the military or police?? Will we start have folks define ‘terrorist threat’ any expression of anger toward authority figures and lawmakers?Meanwhile if you’re a rapper like Chief Keef sporting a 2 million dollar bill, you can talk about stabbing a woman for not given you head or be a rapper who’s actually shot and been accused of killing someone like Snoop Dogg and Gucci Mane and be not only handsomely rewarded but celebrated. Seems like with each passing day the Obama administration are pushing the envelope to see what liberties they can snatch away with.. This is especially scary when you consider that we’ve killed 4 Americans with drones without any sort of due process..To me that’s an act of terror, but thus far no one has been punished for that..Lets keep our eyes on this story..
This speech from Lauryn Hill given back in 2000 is nice, timeless and very refreshing..She seems to be light years ahead of her peers at such a young age.. as she talks about her spiritual growth, the music industry, being independent, being in service to your community, love and conquering the enemy within..
Michelle Obama gave a speech over the weekend at Bowie State saying that too many Black kids fantasize about being ‘ballers and rappers’..Her exact quotes were as follows…
A few things to think about.. First lets just go on record and note, those ballers and rappers that many fantasize about, played a key role in getting Michelle and her husband into the White House, not once but twice..From Lebron James to Jay-Z to Will I am to Common to Beyonce who the First Lady famously asserted was role model for her daughters, were all up in the mix during their campaigns and subsequent inaugurations..These rappers and ballers went out and engaged their fans, by doing songs, concerts and special appearances to go to the polls and vote in what we are now seeing to be record numbers..
Second point.. For the love of God, lets dispel with this 25-year-old cliché first uttered by Spike Lee back in the late 80s at the height of the crack epidemic about Black kids not wanting to read because it would make them appear white.. People who are trying to do the tough love thing have been running with that quote for far too long and it has no bearing in reality.
