Obama Accepts Noble Prize &References Dr King Says Non-Violence is not an Effective Method For Heads of State

Posting up excerpts of  acceptance speeches for the Nobel Peace Prize by both President Obama and Martin Luther King. The natural thing is to make comparisons and perhaps demand that Obama be more King-like especially as he is sending 30 thousand more troops to Afghanistan…

I think its good to see both speeches to see how each man reflects upon what they perceive as their constituents. King talks about the 22 million Black folks who are under seige in this country. Obama talks about a country ‘under seige’ by terrorism.

What stood out for me was hearing how Obama while referencing King, did not reference the people King stood for… He also seemed to make the case that Kings approach toward non-violence is impractical. He cited Hitler’s march to war as an example.

That too me is a direct challenge for us as activists to change the dynamics and make any President or other recipient see us as constituents. As it stands now, President Obama came to Oslo, picked up his award, made a brief speech and skipped all the traditional festivities. Why? Because he was concerned about taking a victory lap while his numbers are down and critics are on his heels making demands…

Dear President Obama,

How outstanding that you’ve been recognized today as a man of peace. Your swift, early pronouncements — you will close Guantanamo, you will bring the troops home from Iraq, you want a nuclear weapon-free world, you admitted to the Iranians that we overthrew their democratically-elected president in 1953, you made that great speech to the Islamic world in Cairo, you’ve eliminated that useless term “The War on Terror,” you’ve put an end to torture — these have all made us and the rest of the world feel a bit more safe considering the disaster of the past eight years. In eight months you have done an about face and taken this country in a much more sane direction.

But…

The irony that you have been awarded this prize on the 2nd day of the ninth year of what is quickly becoming your War in Afghanistan is not lost on anyone. You are truly at a crossroads now. You can listen to the generals and expand the war (only to result in a far-too-predictable defeat) or you can declare Bush’s Wars over, and bring all the troops home. Now. That’s what a true man of peace would do.

There is nothing wrong with you doing what the last guy failed to do — capture the man or men responsible for the mass murder of 3,000 people on 9/11. BUT YOU CANNOT DO THAT WITH TANKS AND TROOPS. You are pursuing a criminal, not an army. You do not use a stick of dynamite to get rid of a mouse.

The Taliban is another matter. That is a problem for the people of Afghanistan to resolve — just as we did in 1776, the French did in 1789, the Cubans did in 1959, the Nicaraguans did in 1979 and the people of East Berlin did in 1989. One thing is certain through all revolutions by people who wish to be free — they ultimately have to bring about that freedom themselves. Others can be supportive, but freedom can not be delivered from the front seat of someone else’s Humvee.

You have to end our involvement in Afghanistan now. If you don’t, you’ll have no choice but to return the prize to Oslo.

P.S. Your opposition has spent the morning attacking you for bringing such good will to this country. Why do they hate America so much? I get the feeling that if you found the cure for cancer this afternoon they’d be denouncing you for destroying free enterprise because cancer centers would have to close. There are those who say you’ve done nothing yet to deserve this award. As far as I’m concerned, the very fact that you’ve offered to walk into the minefield of hate and try to undo the irreparable damage the last president did is not only appreciated by me and millions of others, it is also an act of true bravery. That’s why you got the prize. The whole world is depending on the U.S. — and you — to literally save this planet. Let’s not let them down.

Breakdown FM: Our Interview w/ Kam ‘We Must Save Tookie’

We sat down with former LA Crip Gang member turned rapper Brother Kam. Many of you may recall him as one of the first artists to sign up under Ice Cube’‘s Street Knowledge Record label.

Kam gave us an in-depth perspective on how the system works especially when it comes to dealing with LA gang members wether they are reformed or not. He says that the end game is to keep people wherehoused and to not rehabilitate them.

He speaks about why LA Crip founder, Tookie Williams, a Noble Peace Prize nominee who is currently scheduled to be executed on December 13th is feared. Kam says his wisdom and ability to turn his life around and survive in the belly of beast has been troublesome to a government and system that seeks to keep Black people in a constant state of confusion and disarray.

He goes deep and explains how the government worked night and day to undermine the 1992 Peace Treaties which came about in the aftermath of the Rodney King Uprisings.

Kam explains how organizations ranging from the Nation of Islam to Bloods and Crios to ViceLords and El-Rukins in Chicago are honeycombed with agents who are there to disrupt.He talks about how many of these agents specialize in behavior science and they honed their skillz during the cold war when they were undermining soviet sponsored governments. He says after the cold war, many of those agents returned home and have been assigned to inner cities.

Kam also talks about why we have not seen or heard from more rappers who like to claim Crip and LA gang culture in their music, but have remained silent around the campaign to save Tookie. He talks about how many artists and entertainers can be brought off for a few peices of silver and the opportunity to be famous.

Kam concludes the interview by speaking about why it is important for everyone who is righteous to link up and get organized. he notes that our enemies although wicked are extremely organized. He also cautions us to not try to out Devil the Devil, but to stand for truth.
