Barack X…. Our Intv w/ Jelani Cobb about Obama, Race & Black Image

Professor Jelani Cobb

Earlier this week, long time activist and historian Jelani Cobb put out an article in the New Yorker that talks about President Barack Obama and his image.. He goes in on what the image of a Black man in the White House has meant for the community at large, what its meant for folks all over the world and what type of backlash it has resulted in among white supremacists.

In his article Jelani says the following…

In black America—where people have been voting for Presidential candidates who didn’t share their racial background since even before the Fifteenth Amendment—the 2008 election wasn’t seen as the star-spangled “Kumbaya” it was billed as elsewhere. White rejoicing at Obama’s racial landmark seemed tone deaf, unduly self-congratulatory. White voters had simply done something black voters had been doing for at least the previous hundred and thirty-four years. For this reason and others like it, there was a tendency among blacks to see Obama as an extension of black achievement—but not necessarily a barometer of changing white attitudes. The hyperbolic talk of a post-racial society suggested that white voters, or at least a highly visible segment of them, tended to see the election in precisely the opposite terms.

The other night, we got Jelani to skype into our Black Images class at SF State and share his thoughts on Black image, his article and the complexities around how many see Barack Obama.. We spoke at length about what it means when a Black man is the head of an empire and is the face of foreign policy that is seen as unpopular and out right oppressive in some parts of the world..  Click the link to hear Jelani’s remarks which we aired the other day on Hard Knock Radio..

The Drama Around Street Vendors, Oakland’s Art Murmur & Gentrification

The city of Oakland, has long been a place where people ‘steady grind‘..By that I mean, folks have long hustled goods and services on the city streets to ilk out a living. Rather than sell drugs or turn to prostitution, many have hustled their own music, homemade DVDs, offered up hair breading services, car washes and car repair and most recently food. For most, the extra income has allowed folks to just barely get by.

Every so often someone would blow up and makes it big, resulting in Oakland garnering a ‘rags to riches‘ reputation. The most famous of these tales is rap star Too Short selling home-made tapes out the trunk of his car and getting a big time record deal. Later on other artists like Hobo Junction and Living Legends would follow suit selling tapes in front of local record stores leading to international reputations.

In recent years the city of Oakland has undergone a lot of changes, among them a significant amount of gentrification. Newer more affluent residents have come to Oakland and have made moves to push out long time street vendors and hawkers. They been doing this by going to city council demanding that folks get expensive permits and for those selling food, purchase expensive equipment.

They’ve also pushed to limit the amount of space available for setting up shop and if that’s not enough they have positioned themselves to be the ones to decide who gets to use public space and who doesn’t. These gentrifiers have also lobbied city hall to dispense undercover cops and have them patrol the streets seeking street vendors who would now be deemed illegal operators. All this has led to protests around this new permitting process.

Long time Street Vendor Needa Bee

In our Hard Knock Radio interview long time Oakland resident Needa Bee speaks out about these new regulations coming at the behest of newly formed community associations who are paying big money to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars to establish themselves. Needa details how  out-of-town merchants who have come to Oakland and set up shop and have taken over popular homegrown activities like First Friday Art Murmur which was an 8 year ‘epic street party‘ that allowed local folks to sell their homemade fare. Now we see mostly people of color being pushed to the fringes resulting in what she describes as the poor being criminalized.. Peep and reflect on what Needa B lays out in our interview by clicking the link below

Our Interview w/ Actress & Presidential Candidate Roseanne Barr of the Peace & Freedom Party

Last night hundreds of people came to downtown Oakland’s Oakstradam University to hear actress and now Presidential Candidate for the Peace and Freedom Party Roseanne Barr speak. Weighing heavily on everyone’s mind in this overwhelmingly Democratic city were the recent raids orchestrated by the Obama administration against Cannabis clubs which were legalized by the state 15 years ago and have been an economic boom, tourist attraction and have provided a variety of services for the City of Oakland. To date Cannabis clubs are the second highest source of taxes for the city and so when the unannounced raids occurred more than a few residents and city officials were upset and remain upset.

Roseanne Barr who is steeped in natural health issues and green economy, spoke passionately to the packed house and explained her vision for this country and laid out a blueprint for others to follow. her remarks were well received..Afterwards I spoke with her about what’s shes experienced on the campaign trail. She explained that she was surprised to see just how corporatized the political process has become. The big money embedded is beyond shocking and has had far-reaching chilling effects. She also talked about the complicity of media and corporate backed pundits who she said work hand in hand with some of those powerful interests that have silenced the diversity of voices and perspectives that exists..

Roseanne Barr also noted that she’s been documenting her run for office and will eventually share with the world what’s she had to endure over the past 13 months that she’s been running. She says it will shed a lot of light and hard truths about our Democracy.. Also on hand at last nights gathering was former Green Party presidential candidate and congress woman Cynthia McKinney. Barr’s running mate, antiwar activist  Cindy Sheehan was expected to be there, but for whatever reason was a no-show.. Below is my interview w/ Barr.. Enjoy

HKR: What’s Behind the Unrest in Libya-Is It Really Over an Offensive Film?

Yesterday (HKR) Hard Knock Radio sat down w/ Dawud Walid who heads up the CAIR (Council on American Islamic Relations) chapter in Michigan to talk about the tragic events that have unfolded in Libya. The death of ambassador Chris Stevens and 3 other state department officials has made headlines all over the world. In this interview we sought to answer, ‘Is all the hoopla really about an obscure offensive movie or is there more to the puzzle’?  As offensive as this film may be why would demonstrations against it turn to deadly violence?

Walid gives us a brief history and context about the events that have transpired in Libya over the past year. He notes the intervention by NATO and the US  wasn’t a humanitarian effort as was stated, instead it was more along the lines of Regime Change.. With that in mind, what ever attacks levied on the US Embassy has got to be seen from that perspective.. Walid explains this in greater detail.

Walid also gives us a run down of the forces that may be behind the offensive film. He notes it’s not just one lone film director (Sam Bacile) with an axe to grind against Islam, nor is this the first time an inflammatory film has been released trashing Islam. Walid points out the extremist anti Muslim pro-Occupation Zionist forces who in the past have deliberately sought to inflame tensions in the region and have long used propaganda pieces like this movie to achieve that end.. He suspects that connection exists here..Below is a trailer to this film which was shot in California.. It should be noted that the several of the actors in this film have spoken out condemning the film stating they had no idea of the offensive contents. The script given to them did not add up to the final product.

The other question raised is why didn’t the State Department get out ahead of this film and distance itself and give folks a heads up? The film’s trailer was posted on line back in July..Given the sensitivity and diplomatic experience we have with folks in the region, why wasn’t there a pre-emptive briefing?

In listening to this interview and seeing the events further unfold, what’s not lost on me was being at the DNC in Charlotte a couple of weeks ago and seeing that large crowd of political leaders cheer over and over and chant USA USA as everyone from Vice President Joe Biden to Senator John Kerry emphasized how they killed Osama Bin Laden. We’ve long been told and as a country have often insisted that we not cheer death even if we feel that death was justified. It’s bad seed to plant especially when at look at the latest uproar and this incident and believe the updated information from the state department that the attacks on the Embassy were planned and came from al-Qaeda.

Here’s our HKR interview with Dawud Walid..

HKR Intv w/ Invincible… Holding it Down in Detroit & Being Part of a Queendom

It’s always a pleasure to chop it up with one of our favorite emcees who hails from the Motorcity, Detroit, Michigan.. Invincible is not only someone who will hurt your feelings on the mic, with her wicked flows and willingness to speak truth to power, but she’ll hurt you on the activism tip..

Invincible is more likely to be found at a youth center or on the block working with youth throughout Detroit, make sense of an increasing repressive world.. Her solution is figure out ways to be self-sufficient. While she and others clearly understand the importance of holding folks in power accountable, she’s also crystal clear that those with means and resources, don’t particularly care about the folks they oppress, hence, folks have got to make sure they find ways to survive, with or without their help..

In our interview Invincible breaks down a lot of the innovative ways folks in her city are problem solving systemic issues. She talks about Michigan’s policy of having emergency corporate managers, appointed by the Governor who usurp the power of elected officials and how folks are making things happen in spite of the limitations. She talks about the response youth in her city had when they got suspended for walking out of school to protest sub par education. They started freedom schools and held classes outside the school.. She talked about the media work and new curriculum folks are embracing as well as the Food Justice Movement which in full steam in Detroit..

Lastly we talked about her music, and true to form, Invincible is on some next level ‘ish , as she’s building a Music Box and redefining how music and art is to be distributed..

Invincible will be in town this Saturday for an annual event called Queendom which will also include local female emcees and deejays like DJ Zita, Aima The Dreamer, Persia and a host of others..

HKR Intv w/ Prof Jelani Cobb on Cory Booker, Black Voters & Safe Negro Politicians

Hard Knock Radio 94.1 FM: Just had an insightful conversation with author, professor and political analyst Jelani Cobb about his recent article in the New Yorker Magazine titled: Cory Booker the Dilemma of the Black Politician..In his article Cobb focuses on the recent controversy that Booker found himself embroiled in when he defended Bain Capital, Mitt Romney’s company, while his good friend Barack Obama was dissing it..

Booker’s defense caught many by surprise, not just because he’s surrogate for Obama, but because it seemed so antithetical to what we expect from Black politicians especially one like Booker who is Mayor of Newark which is a staunch Blue Collar city.

During the 2008 election season, Barack Obama was hailed as the most visible of this new class of politicians, which included Booker; Artur Davis, a congressman from Alabama; Adrian Fenty, the mayor of Washington, D.C.; and Harold Ford, a former congressman from Tennessee. Here was a group of men—and they’re all men—who would not be found bullhorning rhymes about police brutality in front of the local precinct house.

In our discussion Cobb talks at length about the oversimplifying labels that are placed on Black politicians and voters. It’s not a one size fits all scenario.. At the same time Cobb both in his article and in our interview how politicians like Booker, Fenty and Davis lost the Black vote in second term elections when it became clear to voters that they were courting other demographics while going out of their way to shun Black constituents.

In our convo Cobb sheds light on some of the myths we have around Black voters and politicians.. We encourage folks to read the article and also listen to our interview as we go in…

This Memorial Day Honor the Troops by bringing them Home: Our Intv w/ Iraq War Vet Matt Howard

Hard Knock Radio 94.1 FM: This Memorial Day we can best honor our troops by working our butts off to make sure they are returned home.. We should work to get our soldiers out of Afghanistan, out of Iraq and out of various countries in Africa..ala Africom… We should also be making sure our soldiers are nowhere near Iran…

In honor of Memorial Day we dropped a nice Memorial Day Mix that features everyone from Paris to Digital Underground to Goapele to Gil Scott-Heron just to name a few.. Click the link below to listen…

We can spend trillions of dollars on making weapons and coming up w/ advanced military strategies, but we can’t seem to put all those resources and bright minds to work toward finding peaceful and diplomatic solutions..

We currently have in our military divisions that work on psychological profiling and manipulation.. it’s a Psy Ops division that recently deployed its methods on US senators including Al Franken to extend the war in Afghanistan.. You can read about that HERE . If we can do that why not use those methods to have lasting peace?

A few days ago we sat down with Iraqi Vet (Iraq Veterans Against the War) Matt Howard who along with hundreds of his fellow soldiers showed in Chicago at the NATO Summit and gave back their medals. He saw the futility of War and how the Military Industrial Complex is working overtime to tank the economy and keep the world upended. And when I say tank the economy, that’s no exaggeration.. Today the military is a major economic windfall for all these private companies who make billions of everything from providing meals where they charge $30 a plate, per meal person to charging $50 per load of laundry..

This is our tax dollars going into the coffers of companies like Halliburton, Boeing and Bechtel.. Not much of that money comes back to our community in reinvestment or even jobs above the few they hire as contractors.  Here’s our insightful interview w/ Matt Howard

Below is a classic cut from the late Gil Scott heron that sums it all up..The Military and the Monetary

From Hardcore Journalist to Dope Emcee-Our Intv w/ SF’s Finest-Rocky Rivera

A while back we sat down and chopped it up with one of the Bay Area’s finest emcees.. We’re talking about Ms Rocky Rivera..For a long time she was known around the town as a skilled journalist and activist who hailed from SF State…She got so good at her craft that she wound being featured in an MTV Reality series called I’m From Rolling Stone‘ .  Here, she won a position as a contributing editor. She is also one of the few if not only journalist to interview all members of the Wu-Tang Clan at the same time.. Her keen knowledge of Hip Hop and her ability to flip the script lead to her winning.

This is important to note, because Rocky decided that she wanted to do more than write, hence she picked up a mic and brought that same scrappy attitude along with her.. The end result has been critical acclaim. In this interview  we cover everything from Rocky’s transition from journalist to emcee, what went into making her latest album, Pop Killer Mixtape, Her outlook on Bay Area Hip Hop  and a whole lot more.. Enjoy

HKR: Jean Grae Speaks Her Mind to Davey D ….Cake or Death

One of my favorite emcees is the one and only Jean Grae. Witty, smart and deftly skilled on the mic, she’s one of the few folks in Hip Hop I hadn’t interviewed even though we’ve run into each other on a number of occasions. Finally when she touched down in Oakland to a do a show at the New Parrish, last summer (2011)  we got a chance to chop it up. During our interview we covered a variety of topics ranging from how she got her name to the highlights of her career to her roots in South Africa to her process for writing songs and executing her artistic vision…We also talked about the upcoming release of her album ‘Cake or Death’ In short we did Jean Grae 101…

Also we gotta give Jean props for doing a great show and being gracious after I spilled the drink she brought me all over her…
