From Minneapolis to Arizona-Toki Wright & Rhymesayers Sayers react to Arizona Immigration Law

Shout out to Toki Wright of the Minneapolis based crew the Rhymesayers Crew ..he came through big time when the Arizona law first went into effect by re-doing the Public Enemy song ‘By the Time I get to Arizona‘.. He finally released a video to this.. Here he shows folks from Minneapolis who are now facing threats of having SB 1070 imported to there, marching on the May Day Rally. I like how all the marchers are wearing shirts that say ‘Illegal’.

Arizona Rap Artist Swindoe Addresses the Harsh New Immigration Law

Props go out to Arizona rapper Swindoe for this video..As he pointed out it’s a ‘ground breaking’ music video where he guides a group of ‘illegal’ immigrants across the Arizona Mexico border. In the blistering 123 degree Arizona heat Swindoe and his group has to out smart the Border Patrol. There’s a climatic ending. It’s the real life roadrunner vs. Coyote. The name of the track is ‘Phony People

I hope more artist step up and put forth some compelling messages about this situation in Arizona..

Aaron McGruder has long spoke out against Barack Obama and his ties to Wall Street and corporate America. Long before the 08 election McGruder was letting his feelings be known. Looks like he’s know coming back with heat.. He takes a swift shot at Will I am of the Black Eyed Peas as he gears up for the new season of The Boondocks. In another clip McGruder spoofs the Tiger Woods commercial.

This Year the South Gets Honored at the VH1 Honors-What Groups Will they Highlight??

Outkast kicked down lots of doors for Southern rap

Every year the VH1 Honors pay tribute to Hip Hop pioneers from various aspects and eras of  its musical culture. Last year they paid tribute to Def Jam records.. The year before they gave dap to West Coast artists. In other years they paid tribute to many of the early pioneers out of New York.. The show brings forth a unique mix of Hip Hop elders to be honored while some of today’s most popular artists pay tribute by re-doing one of their popular songs.

According to Hip Hop pioneer Fab 5 Freddy, one of the driving forces behind this event, its one of the ways they attract a younger audience that otherwise may bypass the honors altogether. It’s not like other commercial outlets that normally present Hip Hop music are routinely educating their audience to have a deeper appreciation for bygone eras. Hip Hop on the commercial side is no where like its Rock-n-Roll counterpart where classic material and pioneering figures in the genre are held in high esteem.

Today there are far too many young cats in Hip Hop who have no idea who the pioneers are. Sadly many don’t even care. Hip Hop has been positioned as a music genre that is supposed to only be for one people. Case in point are the recent potshots we’ve heard younger rappers take at veterans like Jay-Z. Most notably artists like Game have referred to him as an old man over 40 who should not be rapping. You rarely hear those slights taken at Rock artists many like Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen or Paul McCartney who still tour while well into their 50s and 60s. That needs to change. We need to change.

This year the VH1 Honors, normally held in the fall are taking place in June during Black Music month. This year pioneering figures from the South aka the Third Coast will be honored. According to Fab 5 Freddy, he has long wanted to feature artists from this part of the country. They have been dominating for a number of years. he didn’t say exactly who will be on the show, however, I do know when I ran into Houston artists Chamillionaire and Paul Wall the other week they mentioned having to do something for VH1 around the honors… We’ll keep you posted as things unfold.

Here’s the interview we did with Fab 5 Freddy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvjcaVYJXn0

If it was up to me I’d love to see them dig deep and pull out seminal figures like Magic Mike, Clay D, Afrorican, The M4sers and all those folks who were key in the evolution of what was once known as Miami bass. Also included would be 2Live Crew and MC Shy D who I feel has long been overlooked and all but forgotten when his records once upon a time were mainstays.

Geto Boys for years was the dominant group from the South that most of us knew about

Of course we have to pay tribute to Texas..The Geto Boys, UGK,  Lil Keke the late DJ Screw immediately come to mind. Michael Watts is another who we need to look at.

It would be a major oversight to not honor Arrested Development. Outside of the Miami Bass era I think they were the one group that initially captured the essence of that down home feeling that many of us came to associate with the South. I think Arrested Development is underplayed. In that same vein we have to honor  Outkast and the Goodie Mobb.  Dap has to be given to the entire The Dungeon Family which includes Organized Noise. Here’s what Speech had to say about Southern music and whether or not its getting a bad rap.

If I had to pick someone from New Orleans it most definitely would be Juvenile who’s career goes back to New Orlean’s humble bounce music days.

In places like Kentucky I would love to see props be given to Underground Mafia.. I think they were way ahead of their time. and unfortunately only had that one album. Below is one of my favorite songs by the group

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cD3-VU-KPmE

We cant forget 8Ball and MJG out of Memphis.

Finally we have to look at looming figures from Virginia and Washington DC.. DJ Kool, Missy Elliot and Timbaland are names that come to mind.

Erykah Badu’s Window Seat Spawns Off a Slew of Parodies

There’s an old saying ‘Imitation is the greatest form of flattery’. I’m not quite sure how flattered Erykah Badu is feeling with all the slew of parody videos that are popping up around her song ‘Window Seat‘. She seemed to take it all in stride while visiting comedian Wanda Sykes who premiered her version of the song shown below..Not sure of the other videos (also included here) which in many ways take away from Badu’s original message to resist ‘group think’.

From a fan perspective I’m glad to see people playing around with the concept. It’s good to see and hear people talking and debating a work of art that has so many rich layers to it. A good song will always do that and in this case it appears that people are having fun and keeping things light hearted… God knows we need that during this recession. We should also keep in mind that in Badu’s video although not a parody was based upon an original from the singers Kim and Matt who undressed in Times Square.

Here’s one of the more popular video parodys from the group Spoken Reasons..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsReaX83LS8

This one is ok.. its somewhat raunchy in the sense that Mr Grind aka Rico sings his own version of the song and makes references to his love of fat asses…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjPP9yYklH4

Here’s another spoof.. Again song makes raunchy references to body parts.. In this case a woman’s breasts..then it has a ‘fake’ Erykah Badu explaining why she took off her clothes..Its pretty funny.. It’s complimented by a slide show..

3 Revolutionary Videos to Get U Hyped-Sista Souljah, Paris, Aztlan Nation

Looking through some old videos and decided to post a few to put you in the Revolutionary spirit.

I remember this video and this album 360 Degrees of Power.. The beats, made by the bomb squad  were incredible and Sista Souljah who was an activist made the nice switch into the rap world. I wish they promoted her album a bit more and gave her more of a shot… definitely a nice cut..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neNboHZ3paQ

This was one of my favorite songs from Paris the Black Panther of Hip Hop. I remember when the video was shot.. we had no idea how powerful those images would be, especially when since they were being shown on MTV.. We need more songs like this and outlets to accommodate them..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHXy4K2isr8

Aztlan Nation made a lot of noise back in the early 90s. This Oakland based group were activist who used Hip Hop as a way to get their messages across..loved this video they did back in the days..‘Home of the Brave’ was a dope album

Hip Hop is Worldwide-Meet Chilean Emcee Anita Tijoux

We caught up with Chilean emcee Anita Tijoux who made lots of waves during SXSW 2010. It was her first trip to the US as she celebrated the release of her new album 1977. The title represents the year she was born along the pioneering days of Hip Hop in the Bronx.

Anita who is an astute student of Hip Hop music and culture noted that its important to reference and pay tribute to the foundation. Anita through her flows, subject matter and study of other emcees has managed to do just that-pay homage.

For many here in the states Anita Tijoux is a new face in an already packed scene. In Chile she’s abig deal-a superstar. She was born in France to a French mother and Chilean father who was in political exile during the Pinochet dictatorship. She first started to get known in 1997 when she was part of a group called Makiza which featured Seo2, Cenzi and DJ Squat. She later left the group and attempted to go solo and for a while hooked up with Julieta Venagas  a popular pop singer. She later reunited with members of Makiza and then left again to do her solo album 1977

We started off our interview by getting an update on the situation in Chile. She explained that many people in her country are suspicious after the 8.8 earthquake and they fear another shoe is going to drop. Many believe that the shaking was man-made-caused by HAARP… Others are saying, the earth-shaking so violently was God’s way of saying get rid of the president and the fascist regime he represents…Anita noted that while her family is doing ok, many people are not. Chile has privatized everything from water to medical help, hence only those with money are faring well. Others are suffering.

We spoke to Anita about her music and whats influenced her. She says that she mixes traditional folkloric music with Hip Hop. She says she rhymes in Spanish although many insist it’s easier to do it in English.  She says her biggest influence were artist like Bahamadia. She also notes that if she had a magic wand she would love to do a song with KRS-One, Flying Lotus, Peanut Butter Wolf and Madlib.

Anita laced us up on the Hip Hop scene throughout Latin America. She said things are in full gear in places like Bolivia, Venezuela and Peru. Brazil things are really large to the point its an entity on to itself.  She noted how MTV has ‘MTV Latin America’ and ‘MTV Brazil’. She noted that Hip Hop has widespread appeal because it gives voice to the voiceless especially in poorer communities.

We conclude by speaking with Detroit rapper Invincible who is featured on the song Sube which talks about upliftment and using Hip Hop as a tool. Invincible had nothing but praise for Anita who she said she met online and began the process that led to them recording the song which they performed several times during SXSW.
