3 Dope Songs from Abie Flinstone of Belgium Dubbed the Asian Nicki Minaj

Abie FlinstoneWith a laid back demeanor, no one would expect the lyricism that Abie Flintstone delivers. Hailing from Southern Davao (Philippines) but currently residing in Lommel (Belgium), Abie has the potential and makings to be a musical force to reckon with. Many like to call her the Asian Nicki Minaj, saying that she’s a breath of fresh air to the rap game. She is also the youngest rap artist out of Belgium to get a US Record deal. She’s signed to Akon‘s Konvict Music

From writing and recording in her bedroom, which she calls ‘Bedrock’, Abie is a true self-made star in her own right, from the checks on her shoes to the creativity of her craft that she has almost perfected, but continuously works on. In an industry where not sleeping on the job is proven to be true, her dedication to her music shows she’s ready for anything. All Abie has to say about her one man band is “I’ma just let it all fall into place.”

Her music tends to be along the lines of uptempo club/house vein

3 Dope Songs from Public Enemy’s Landmark Album Muse Sick-N-Hour Mess Age

public_enemy_-_1994_muse_sick-n-hour_mess_ageAugust 23 2013: 19 years ago today Public Enemy released their fifth album Muse Sick-N-Hour Mess Age..For the most part the album did pretty well, but not as well sales wise as previous PE albums. Personally it was one my favorite joints and too me their most political. For the group it was a turning point as some prominent music critics unfairly bashed the group for not being ‘street enough‘ because they didn’t have a a gangsta sound and that they were too old..

At that time Warren G and the G Funk Era was in full swing and if you weren’t doing that you were rocking a pair tims and a hoodie and doing videos standing in a sewer to reflect how hardcore you were.

Younger heads who were just getting into Hip Hop were getting attached to artists like Nas, Hobo Junction, Organized Konfusion and Outkast who all dropped debut albums that year.

The music had moved away from political messages to one of making  CREAM ala Wu-Tang who dropped their debut album the  year before or being Gucci Down to your socks  ala Biggie who dropped his debut album ‘Ready to Die‘ that year..

PE was caught in the middle but stuck to their guns and their message which I think has stood the test of time..
Below are 3 songs that stood out for me on that album..

Public Enemy  So Watcha Gonna Do Now?..

Long before we even thought of Barack Obama or a Black president, PE does a song that depicts one . Its re-enactment of what befell President John F Kennedy in Dallas back in 1963 except in this song PE gives it a different twist at the end.  The lyrics themselves speaks out about gangsterism..I wish they had shown the video more back when this track came out..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhKqsIe283c

Public Enemy  Ain’tNutting ButterSong

I love how Public Enemy took a traditional patriotic song and flipped it on its air with a Jimmy Hendrix type vibe. The lyrics are searing as they go in on the contractions of America, the flag and what she says she stands for vs what she actually does with people of darker hues.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3G3tpB5sdY

Public Enemy Godd Complexx

I really appreciated this song when it came out and played it all the time.. They did a cover to the Last Poets controversial spoken word piece the White Man’s Got a God Complex. Here Flavor Flav does the duties and sticks to the words of the original song while riding a funky beat..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyBlV1CV8fM

I figured I’d let folks peep the original joint from the Last Poets in case you never heard it before today..

Last Poets The White Man’s Got a God Complex

Def Jeff God Complex

As much as I like the God Complex song by PE, I gotta note they weren’t the first to flip the song.. A few years earlier LA based rapper Def Jeff who was on Delicious Vinyl reworked the song. Here he skillfully sampled the Last Poets while simultaneously riding over the beat to Gil Scott Heron‘s classic jam ‘The Revolution Will Not Be Televised’.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfOmXmiNtAM

Public_Enemy_-_Muse_Sick-N-Hour_Mess_Age-backPublic Enemy Thin Line Between Law and Rape..

This has got to be the most chilling song on the album as Chuck D talks about the horrific legacy of slavery and colonization where our our sisters, land and resources were routinely raped raped. Chuck wrote the following:

“It’s A Thin Line Between Law and Rape deals with the fact that the image of rape and crime has been thrust upon Black symbols here in America and throughout the world. America and the Western world have raped entire races of people of their name, God, religion, culture, and language, have raped continents of their resources and progeny, and have raped our women, which is the main reason Black people are so many different shades today. The laws of America allowed it, so I titled the song It’s A Thin Line Between Law and Rape.”

They employ reggae vocals of Colin Rochester who does a haunting hook at the end. He lived around the group In Roosevelt, Long Island. He appear edon Terminator X‘s solo album. Chuck noted that Colin was deported back to Jamaica shortly after the album was released.

3 Dope Female Emcees Who Should Respond to Kendrick Lamar’s Outta Control Verse

female-emcees-psoterlightI know everyone is still talking about the verse heard around the world uttered by Kendrick Lamar on Big Sean‘s Outta Control song. Since then damn near everyone has offered up a response from Papoose to Joel Ortiz to Lupe Fiasco to B.O.B. and everyone in between. Most took issue with Kendrick claiming he was the King of New York. Others objected to him suggesting he would lyrically ‘murder’ them..He ignited something  and everyone was put on notice to step their game up..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdcNoGmt7Ws

Unfortunately whats’ missing in all these exchanges are the voices of some of our sisters.  Ideally it would’ve been nice to see some of the better known emcees like a Jean Grae, M.I.A. MC Lyte, Nicki Manaj, Lil Kim, Medusa etc respond to Kendrick but he didn’t name check ’em  like he did everyone else.. Perhaps Kendrick avoided saying the names of these female emcees because they really would’ve cut him down to size…Maybe the self-proclaimed  King of New York should be replaced by a a Queen..

Here are 3 female emcees along w/ 3 honorable mentions who should respond to Kendrick and let him know what time it really is…

Nitty Scott MC

Nitty Scott MC

Many people got hip to Nitty Scott MC when he amazed folks during one of the BET ciphers..She put folks on noticed by letting them know ‘mamma was home and cats better get their bars up and their flows right’..

Since then she’s rocked a bunch of songs  and as far as many of us are concerned, she’s killing it.. Yes indeed Nitty needs to jump in the outta control fray and send Kendrick home without his crown..

Nitty ScottMC Bullsh#t Raps‘..

Now in all fairness maybe Kendrick didn’t call out Nitty because he had done a song with her and already knew she could bring heat if tested..

Snow Tha Product

Snow Tha Product

Snow tha Product lives in Texas but originally hails from the Bay Area-San Jose to be exact. When she raps she always on beast mode letting everyone know that got flows and rhymes for days  designed to chop folks up..

From what I gather Snow is constantly being tested because of her gender, her ethnicity (she’s Mexican)  and because she’s not from one of the big cities like LA or NY and rolling with a big baller type clique. As a result its been easy for some to write her off only to find that she responds with serious heat. It’s obvious that Snow has no intention of backing down to no one..

Lately she’s been making noise doing songs with artists like  Tech N9ne,   Trae thsa Truth and Lupe Fiasco.. She’s also one of the few females emcees scheduled to grace the stage at Rock the Bells. It’d be nice to see her jump in the fray and put Kendrick on blast…

Farrah Burns

Farrah Burns

Farrah Boule Burns is one of my favorite emcees who could easily go Outta Control against Kendrick and do it with seven different personas as shown in the video below..Her wordplay is nice. Her flows diverse as she lives, eats and drinks Hip Hop 24/7.. The only crown Kendrick will be holding is the ones to replace his teeth after she lyrically knocks them out…Do not sleep on this sista..Nas didn’t as he recently shouted her out for this remake of his song.. She is definitely a Queen in New York..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Amp-jQfZP9E

I Love the way Farrah flipped rhymes over this classic jam…

***Just as I put this  article out, folks pointed me to Sa-Roc  and Alyssa Marie who both responded directly responded to Kendrick.. Sadly this got by me, but its not too late to add theirs song to this article.. So peace to Sa Roc for holding it down big time and peace to Alyssa Marie and shame on me for missing them both.

3 Dope ‘Rare’ Songs from Chuck D of PE as We Celebrate His Birthday..

Chuck D on PE logoToday August 1 is the birthday of Chuck D aka Mistachuck, lead rapper of the seminal Hip Hop group Public Enemy.. Earlier this year the group was inducted into the Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame which was a well deserved honor..But we should all note within Public Enemy is an array of musicians and producers who are capable of holding their own in a variety of fields.. from the Bomb Squad to Professor Griff to Flavor Flav..

As we celebrate Chuck D’s birthday we wanted to go beyond his immense body of work as a member of public Enemy and look at some of his solo and spin-off projects.. So today’s 3 Dope songs is dedicated to Chuck D and some of his recent and rare songs y’all should know..

First we wanna look at a recent song Chuck D did with long time friend and musical collaborator Kyle Jason who is an incredible musician and fellow PE member Professor Griff.. The song below is off a new compilation album called ‘Don’t Rhyme for the Sake of Riddlin’

Mistachuck I Hate featuring Kyle Jason and Professor Griff

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87_HDTMc7Nk

This is another solo project done under the name Mistachuck produced by long time PE member Johnny Juice.. It’s dedicated to those fighting to tear down walls of separation especially along our borders.. Always forward thinking, Chuck had done this song months before Arizona passed its Draconian anti-immigrant SB 1070 law.. The version below is a remix and video that acknowledges the challenges in Arizona while addressing the border challenges everywhere..

Kyle Jason, Proffessor Griff and Chuck D..Confrontation Camp

Kyle Jason, Professor Griff & Chuck D.. Confrontation Camp

Looking back into time.. we recall  that Chuck D  was part of a rock rap featuring Professor Griff and Kyle Jason group called Confrontation Camp?

They did an album called Objects in the Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear which included a gut wrenching song called Jasper which paid tribute to James Byrd, a Black man dragged to his death in the back of a truck by a group of white racists. This happened June 7th 1998…

Confrontation Camp-Jasper

Another group that Chuck D started was a 5 man group called Fine Arts Militia which featured stellar musicians Brian Hardgroove of Bootsy Collin fame, Wes Little (drums), Victor J. Burks (keyboards), and Brad Craig (guitar).

Chuck D Fine Arts MilitiaThe group essentially rocked funky music behind Chuck D doing a hybrid of spoken word and rap, with the subject matter being a series of lectures he had done around the topics of Race, Rap and Technology. This was ground breaking in the sense that Chuck was new deep in the emerging dotcom era and spending a lot of time on the west coast around Silicon Valley..

He and his team were doing some innovative stuff at the time ranging from being one of the first to record a full album completely on line to setting up digital label (Slam Jamz) and establishing a supersite called Rapstation.com which early on was doing internet radio.. Their debut album, We Are Gathered Here, appeared on Koch in spring 2003 was a sound track for that time period.

3 Dope Songs to Mark July 4th, Independence Day & American Dominance

American Flag soldToday is July 4th, Independence Day which is an interesting concept when you consider how are independence is now being compromised by those increasing erosion on our Civil and Human Rights by our government and the multi-national corporations that back them. Over the years we’ve seen billions spent to buy up politicians via lobbying efforts and the emergence of official partnerships via ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council ) where corporations write laws that are later championed by elected officials. Its patriotism at its finest, if you have millions and billions.

Speaking of which, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mark Independence Day by acknowledging a disturbing trend that is best personified by New York’s billionaire Mayor Michael Bloomberg. This is a man who once famously said NYPD which is 40 thousand strong, is his own private army. He than commenced to allow that police department to cripple our independence by having them deploy an invasive policy called Stop and Frisk..

Under Bloomberg, his private army have executed stopped and frisked over 5 million times, with 85-90% of being Black and Brown men.. Less than 10% of those stops were found to be in violation of any law, minor or major.. Yet in spite of massive complaints and a number of high profiles cases of police killings and brutality during stop and frisk encounters, Bloomberg as said the police need to stop more Black people and that they are going hard on too many white folks….

Last week NY’s City Council recently voted to reign in some of the stop and frisk tactics.. the billionaire Mayor got pissed and is now investing his personal fortunes into launching campaigns against anyone who opposed stop and frisk..

Seems like Mayor Bloomberg & Police Commissioner Ray Kelly are heavily borrowing from the sordid legacies of LAPD Chiefs Chief William H Parker & Darryl Gates

Mayor Bloomberg & NY Police Commissioner Ray Kelly wanna up the ante with Stop and Frisk

Again, I cite Bloomberg and his antics because he personifies the growing trend in America that we should peep this independence day.. That would be Corporate dominance and tyranny, the privatization of public space and goods.

This July 4th we should note that in the name of so-called national security our independence is marked by major telecom and internet companies collecting personal data from millions of people for the NSA. Many of those people later down the road may face scenarios where they have to prove their innocence rather than be proven guilty of any sort of crime or in the case of this data collecting ‘associated’ with folks connected to terrorism.. Those same corporations while wrapped in the flag of  ‘patriotism’ have used the media outlets they own to hire pundits who will not only justify towing the party line, but will enthusiastically cheer what many see as fascism…

M1 and Obama NationOur Independence Day is now marked by a huge increase in private prisons  and detention centers and harsh new laws that make it easy for anyone to get caught up and become a long-term resident in these facilities. It’s now known that in 2013 a sound monetary investment may be in private prison stocks.. This is something that several our most popular TV and Cable outlets have found to be the case, hence they’ve invested.. Yes I’m talking about you Viacom which includes MTV and BET.. Yes, I’m talking about you Time Warner..

Today should not be a day to blindly shoot of fire works and stuff a bunch of hot dogs down our throats.. It should be a day we reflect on the imperialistic direction this country has turned and what sort of things we can do to both raise awareness and craft solutions. This should be a day that we all ask ourselves, how did a country which was founded in 1776 with the backdrop and official policies that supported Native American genocide and African people being enslaved, 235 years later, still be vicious and oppressive to many of its people and folks around the world.

Today we should be questioning our foreign policy far too often supports ruthless dictators, undermines duly elected leaders and has a policy of bringing about regime change when leaders we don’t like stand up to us..We wont even talk about our Drone policy which has brought terror to the lands of people who’se countries the average American couldnt find on a map if quizzed. Much of foreign policy is driven by the companies and corporations that make up the Military Industrial Complex.. Again the key word to all this privatization.

If you wanna be a true Patriot, question our government and hold those who make bad and unlawful decisions accountable

Below are 3 Dope Songs to Mark Independence Day.. along with several bonus songs that give us some compelling perspectives about America, Home of the Free Land of the Brave..

Brother Ali ‘Uncle Sam Goddamn’.. This is an honest and heartfelt song where Minneapolis based Brother Ali ask the tough questions of Uncle Sam and of himself who lives within these lands…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46l236O7Iv8

Immortal Technique  ‘4th Branch’.. This is a classic song from this Harlem based emcee. The 4th branch has always been the media and in this song he shows how its been used to corrupt people’s ideology. Often times its that same media that beats the drums of war under the guise of Patriotism..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSfk0wLs4EE

Flipsyde ‘US History’ This Oakland based group literally flipped the script, by doing a song about the rise of the world’s biggest Super Power.. It’s a history lesson all of us should be taught in school. Its also a song that gotta lot of love all over the world..

3 Dope Songs from Kev Choice… A Bay Area Treasure, A Musician’s Musician

Kev Choice

Kev Choice

Shout out to one of the hardest working brothers in show biz… Its Oakland’s own Kev Choice.. Around these parts he’s a fixture as the classically trained pianist is highly sought after from by everyone from Boots of the Coup who he’s currently on tour with to Lauryn Hill.  The man does everything from write to compose to emcee and of course he does it with extreme funkiness. To put it succinctly  Kev is a musician’s musician.. The other day I got a nice video from him in France and decided to highlight him in the 3 Dope Song series..A little bit of background..

Back in 2009, Kev Choice launched the Daily Dosage music series to offer music lovers and fans a new song every 24 hours from Halloween until New Year’s Eve. Fast forward to 2012. During Kev’s European Fall Tour as keyboardist with The Coup, Kev launched the Daily Dosage: Euro Edition from Dijon, France. The second song recorded in this series — “Show The World” — was recorded in his hotel room in Dijon. The song carries the theme of showing the world what you have to offer, taking advantage of the moment, taking risk, and the challenges of seeking international fame. The song was produced by Kev Choice and features a sample from French composer and arranger Jean-Claude Petit.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeRV4sjx-0Y&feature=youtu.be

About a year ago Kev Choice and long time SF based singer Martin Luther hooked up to do this heartfelt song called ‘Let It All Go’ The song pertains to dealing with everyday stress and struggles. Kev Choice plays a homeless person in the video, with the message being that no matter how bad things may be, it could always be worse. The video was shoot on location in downtown San Francisco by director Samm Styles and Brian Storm

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjaLkB7hq5c

Below is one my favorite songs from Kev..Its an inspiring song called ‘The Best‘.. It was originally featured as one of his Daily Dosage offerings. Hopefully it leaves you inspired as it did me..

3 Dope Songs To Raise Your Consciousness During this Troubling Week

Hakim Green and Kool Herc Someone was complaining the other day about lack of consciousness in Hip Hop… He wanted to know where all the good emcees are? I asked him where he was checking? In the age of consolidation, corporate tyranny and a desire to dumb down the masses and make them consummate consumers, did he expect to hear consistent consciousness on ‘pop culture outlets?’.. When you have companies like Viacom and Time Warner holding investments in private prisons why would you expect to hear and see folks telling you to fight the power? Those outlets are in fact the power you should be fighting.

If we are to learn anything from the recent NSA spying drama, is that a whole lot of corporations  are trying to cash in on the multi-billion dollar a year prison-police-security industrial complex.  Much of our corporate media is in the business of serving as a PR Firm vs being an investigative news agency for Draconian policies.

With that in mind, I wanted to alert folks  via our 3 Dope Songs series of some bumping joints that are floating around raising consciousness. The fight for social justice has not gone away..Hip Hop on this level is as it was years ago, its being meticulously created, nurtured and ready to be embraced by all.. Below are 3 songs that fit the bill and will let you know without a shadow of a doubt.. Intelligence is alive and well and fighting the power is daily occurrence..

First up is Hakim Green from the group Channel Live.. This brother stays on the grind, not just as an emcee, but as an activist. He goes directly to the heart of the problem and stays involved. If we have violence in the community, Hakim is there working directly with those causing the chaos. If we say we need political change, Hakim ir right there.. Here’s a video he just put out to a song called Secrets.. enjoy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_x-spwOjr5A&feature=youtu.be

Next up is Wise Intelligent from Poor Righteous Teachers.. This cat still has one of the illest flows and ultra sharp lyrics.. I wish more folks would try and include him as a guest on their records.. I also love the concepts that Wise brings to the table.. Peep this video to the song ‘I said It‘ which will make you reflect on the George Zimmerman trial which just started today and the mindset of people who think and act like him and what he did to Trayvon Martin..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sw5tIHMhmLs

This next video is from a sister named Narubi Selah.. I first saw this earlier this year and was surprised more folks ain’t hold it up.. She comes with some hard edge lyrics that’ll definitely make you rewind to catch what she just spit… I’m loving this song ‘Hookless‘ and I hope you do as well. Look for her album The Architect: Sacred Geometry

I’m literally counting the days for her masterpiece called Ms Fortune.. she has a sampler which is free download.. But the cut for me to get you going is a song called Walk Alone.. I wish she had a video for it.. I think I’ll make a public appeal..Also if you get a chance check out her weekly radio show Hip Sister Hop which airs Mondays from 1-2pm Australian time.. 3 Dope Songs from SF’s Best Kept Secret-Hopie: Reflect, Refocus, Reload

HopieAs we continue our series 3 Dope Songs, we caught up with Hopie formerly Hopiespitshard one of San Francisco’s best kept secrets as she just released her 4th independent album called Sugar Water. She explained that this is her first album since completing law school and it reflects a new change of direction for her..

During our sit-down, Hopie explained that the rigors of law school and the cut throat environment which fosters individualism vs community and collaborations took a tool on her music. She noted that her last album Raw Gems she was overly aggressive and not as centered as she felt she should be… She wanted to grow and come back to ‘community’. As she explained in our interview, helping the community is why she went to law school, but the competitive nature of it along with the huge cost can quickly make such a goal be put on the back burner if you’re not careful.

With this new album, she had to time to reflect, refocus and come back home.. She took some bold steps by teaming up with a new production crew called Supernaut. She explained it was an amicable decision between her and long time producer 6 Fingers to branch out. Hopie also experimented with new sounds and concepts.. We found the her approach to be refreshing. Her album is nice..and we give her props for being open and willing to push the envelope vs getting locked into suffocating type of box.. Below is or Hard Knock Radio intv.. along with some past and present videos from Hopie who is fearless, talented and always on point..

3 Dope Songs From Farrah Burns…She Speaks Fluent Hip Hop

Farrah Burns

Farrah Burns

If you haven’t heard of this sista Farrah Boule Burns, you need to..especially if you love Hip Hop. I say this not be too cliché, but on the real this woman spits fire, from the heart and will seriously move you..She’s of Haitian Cuban descent and according to her Facebook page, she speaks fluent Hip Hop..

She noted in a recent interview with Amour Creole Magazine:

I understood it (Hip Hop) as a language first, then as a culture, and it made complete sense and was worth preserving. In order to preserve a culture you can’t allow a language to die. So I set the plan in motion cleared out my savings, got it trademarked and became a business.

She would later rock ‘I Speak Fluent Hip Hop’ t-shirts and hoodies’.

If there’s any doubt about Farrah’s ability to speak the Hip Hop language, I invite you to peep the video below ‘New York Sate of Mind‘.. Now if you’re gonna take a classic song from Nas, you better come correct.. Farrah does this by playing the role of 7 emcees..She does with no emcee has ever done.. she manage to take a Nas song and make it her own..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Amp-jQfZP9E

Her single  “Shot Gun Wedding” is a power house that will shake your soul… Based on a true story she depicts a tale of her father and his insecurities about complexion. The song really hits home as she paints a vivid picture of the many problems we face today Light skin vs Dark skin.

Farrah teamed up with the insanely talented Producer Kurser Fabrice to launch the Shot Gun Wedding Movement. When asked what the movement represents she replied “Shot Gun Wedding” is more than just a song, it’s raising awareness and encouraging open discussions at the dinner table. These are the same issues that’s rocking our foundation now. I want to do what the Cosby’s did for me but it in a hip hop way”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLoZ4CdvJrU

Her first Album Oval Metal landed her the Under Ground Music Awards for Best Female Rapper. The single of the same name skillfully borrows from Nina Simone as Farrah does what so many emcees have stopped doing, move us with some passionate words about a dilemma of the hear she’s facing.. We included the studio version as well as her rocking a live performance in Brooklyn..
