Why is There So Much Hype About Riots After this George Zimmerman Verdict?

Trayvon Martin signSo as the jury deliberates for a second day around this George Zimmerman trial, talk about Rodney King style riots breaking out is being amped up..

News anchors and pundits along with the police are showing up on TV looking all somber telling us to please keep it peaceful and stay calm no matter what the verdict.. I think I saw a news report with Reverend Al Sharpton telling us not to gloat if Zimmerman is convicted..Seemingly every Civil Rights leader from Jesse Jackson to NAACP head Ben Jealous has been dragged before the cameras to plead for folks to trust in the justice system, even if it far too often, leaves us on the short end of the stick.

In preparing for this possible urban unrest, community leaders have gone out and tapped young people to do anti-violence PSA’s where they plead for peace. The whole scene reminded me of what was done on the days leading up to the Oscar Grant verdict which took place July 8th 2010.. Folks in the Bay Area may recall this PSA shown below:

This is what’s being done now around the Zimmerman trial:

Several protesters lie face down on the ground in front of of riot

Protesters lie face down on the ground in front of riot cops

With respect to this threat of riots/civil unrest, let’s unpack that for a minute. My experience over the years of covering uprisings during the Oscar Grant Movement, the Occupy Movement, various the DNC and RNC Conventions from 2000 on up, to several G20 and G8 summits has led me to the conclusion that we should always be asking the following questions; 1-Who is pushing the assertions that riots are imminent and how are they pushing it? 2-Who stands to benefit the most from the threat of unrest? (key word ‘threat’)  3-What’s the political, economic and social agenda if any, attached these threats?

Personally I think the riot talk is being hyped up to the financial benefit of two main outfits which are corporate media and the Police.. Both thrive off of fear, confusion and mayhem..

In the case of news outlets, a riot is the ultimate reality tv that falls in line with its tried and true modus operandi “if it bleeds it leads’..Trust me many of those anchors and pundits may be sitting up in their cushy chairs pleading with you to stay home, but their overall coverage and over the top on air banter is designed to push emotional buttons, ignite and incite..

OscarGrantChaos in the streets equals ratings, hence if there ain’t some windows being broken and fires being lit after this verdict comes down, you’re gonna have some disappointed news outlets..

The other outfit that benefits from all this riot talk are the police..You start talking riots and civil unrest, it becomes an all hands on deck operations. This means cops are called in on their day off while others have their vacation days cut..

Everyone is put to work as the departments deploy extra patrols and increase surveillance and intel gathering of anyone and everyone who they think might be down to set it off after the verdict is read..

In preparation for the riots..you best believe many departments are dusting off the law books and seeing how they can push the legal envelope.. This means they may do explore everything from mass arrests to pre-emptive raids and detaining of key organizers to shutting down entire blocks and neighborhoods to setting up enclosed ‘protests zones’ and ‘free speech cages’. Many are going over crowd control and kettling strategies

All this is happening to the tune of massive overtime pay for law enforcement.. This is on top of them busting out new weapons, new vehicles and new Star wars-type storm trooper outfits..

I recall during the Oscar Grant and Oakland Occupy Movements, police would hold press conferences warning fearful residents of ‘outside agitators’ and anarchists. They would then bring in as many as 500 cops from 17 different jurisdictions to the tune of 500k to one million a pop..

Police Riot gearThis scenario is playing out in cities all over the country. From Oakland to New York to Chicago to Houston.. Police in Sanford, Florida are not the only ones gearing up for ‘civil unrest’. It’s big business and a lot of folks are fixing to get paid..

The biggest irony to all this all this is while the focus and concern on riots is directed at Black folks who are continuously being demonized, civil unrest may actually come from far-right wing nuts who support George Zimmerman and feel a conviction will be a blow to Stand Your Ground Laws..Black folks do not have a monopoly on civil unrest..

This country has a sordid past where we seen angry white mobs set off some of the most devastating riots’ in history with Black people as their target. from Tulsa to Chicago to Atlanta to Bensonhurst, BK to Boston to Howard Beach.. Even in the riots most associated with Black unrest, large numbers of Black folks were killed often at the hands of the police who used the occasion to go off..We saw this during the Watts Riots in 65 to the Newark and Detroit uprisings in ’67 to Rodney King unrest  in ’92. Many of us deemed those deaths as target practice.. The recent HBO documentary about all those killed by police during the Newark Riots gives a serious breakdown on this.

In recent years we’ve seen a major increase in the number of Black people killed or brutalized by the police. According to the latest reports from the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, every 28 hours a Black person is killed by police.  You don’t think that hostility won’t play out during a Rodney King style riot?? All one has to do is look at what unfolded during Katrina when there were threats of riots and mayhem to see how the police and folks in power get down.. There were all sorts of killings both by police and vigilante types..

tea-party-gun-advocateOver the past few years we’ve seen the uncovering of plots with white supremacist attempting to find ways to set off some sort of race war.. We’ve seen a rise in militia types who feel like this country is set to collaspe with Black and Brown folks as the blame. This is coupled with the anger and vitriol we’ve seen by Tea Party types who have shown up with guns in tow on to presidential campaign rallies and congressional townhall meetings that they’ve disrupt, who down to bring the ruckus..

During this George Zimmerman trial we’ve had a number of prominent conservative leaning journalists from Geraldo Rivera to Joe Scarborough hawking the ‘Trayvon was a hoodie wearing thug who got what he deserved‘ narrative and that if Zimmerman doesn’t get off its an indication are country is falling. Many have embraced such rhetoric to the point that in all honesty instead of just having a traditional Civil Rights leaders calling for peace, maybe we need to see folks like Pastor Rick Warren or the head of the NRA Wayne LaPierre doing PSA calling on folks to be peaceful and respect the verdict.

What’s also ironic is with many of these so-called riots we’ve seen in recent years from the one in Austin, Texas in May of 2009 when police killed a sleeping Nathaniel Sanders to the recent unrest in East Flatbush, Brooklyn after Kamani Gray was gunned down, they pale in comparison to the unrest we see breakout after sporting events.

Compare the unrest in Oakland after the Oscar Grant verdict in 2010 to the mayhem that engulfed neighboring San Francisco after the Giants won the World Series this past year.

Compare the unrest that occurred on the Penn State campus when went students went buckwyld after learning head coach Joe Paterno was fired with the lack of unrest in Detroit a few weeks ago when a mistrial ‘verdict ‘ came down for SWAT Team member Joseph Weekley who was accused of killing 7 year old Aiyana Stanley Jones while he was ‘showing off’ for a Reality TV show.

Compare the reaction to verdicts of injustice to high profile cases like Sean Bell or Amadou Diallo where officers were acquitted for shooting un-armed men to the riots in the streets we saw after the Lakers Beat the Celtics in 2010 or after the crazy riots in Vancouver after the Canucks lost the Stanley Cup. Where was the nationwide calls for peace or even Anti-riot PSAs from the respective sports stars?

Penn State Riots

Penn State Riots

What’s going on right now with all these impending riot warnings seems like another attempt to resurrect the scary Black Boogey man..It’s the continued demonization of Black folks at all costs.  It was done during this trial where Trayvon Martin‘s character was called into question and he was depicted as a weed smoking violent prone thug vs George Zimmerman who actually has an arrest record, a criminal past and a history of violence.. It’s being done now with the goal of planting fear in the minds of many..

By feeding into that narrative of young African-Americans as the main instigators and sole participants, what gets overlooked is the fact that in many civil disturbances including the Rodney King uprisings which we are told we need to prevent, folks from all sorts of racial and ethnic backgrounds were running around kicking up dust and in the mix. We saw that during the Oscar Grant protests.. We saw that during the uprisings in London and France.. We sure as hell saw that during the Occupy, Anti-war and Anti-Globalization Protests.

What also gets lost is that many times there are no riots after any number of controversial trials.

If there is any sort of unrest after this George Zimmerman trial because he’s acquitted it won’t be only Black folks out in the streets. It’ll be folks of all stripes who are upset with a justice system that they perceive as unfair.. If there is unrest perhaps we should be exploring ways to repair a broken justice system that has left many with broken spirits and broken hearts vs worrying about broken windows which are easily replaced..

Fruitvale Station Panel Discussion w/ Cast and Director at Oakland Premier

Fruitvale station oscar daughterThis weekend the movie Fruitvale Station opens up nationwide..Its the true story of Bay Area resident Oscar Grant who was brutally murdered Jan 1 2009 by an out of control transit cop named Johannes Mehserle.. For folks in Oakland and the Bay Area, Oscar’s death which was caught on tape by multiple cameras was a shock, especially 3 weeks before the inauguration of the nation’s first Black president Barack Obama..

His murder led to 18 long months of protests, organizing and agitating resulting in a conviction of Mehserle..Sadly, he served less than two years thanks to the bias rulings of a pro-cop Los Angeles judge named Robert Perry who every step of the way manipulated things to favor this renegade cop.

The movie Fruitvale Station is powerful, gripping, moving and healing.. Director Ryan Coogler deserves lots of praise for doing a movie that focused on Grant’s last 24 hours.. It highlighted his humanity and the relationships he had with his family, friends, fiance and daughter..This was lost during the trial and the protests, many forgot or never really got to know who Oscar was flaws, good parts and all..Actors Michael B Jordan, Melonie Diaz and Octavia Spencer bring their A game to this flick and give us lots to grow on.

After the Oakland premier, I got a chance to host an incredible panel discussion, featuring all the cast members and key folks who worked magic behind the scenes like famed actor Forest Whitaker.. Our convo was wide-ranging and compelling as we discussed everything from their inspiration as actors to the impact police brutality has had on their personally.. Afro-Mexicans on Hunger Strike to Protest Death of Malcolm X’s Grandson

Protest for Malcolm ShabbazzRight now the eyes of the world are focused on two hunger strikes..One just kicked off in California at Pelican Bay with inmates, demanding improved conditions including an end to solitary confinement…Yesterday (July 8th) more than 30 thousand inmates refused food…

The other big hunger strike is the one in Guantanamo Bay which was started by detainees and has been going on for more than 100 days.. Yesterday Yasiin Bey aka Mos Def made a video where he demonstrated how striking prisoners were being force fed food. It was grueling and beyond disturbing. Yasiin because of the extreme pain, could not complete what detainees are forced to endure everyday.

There is a 3rd hunger strike that we should pay attention to…This one involves Afro-Mexicans in Mexico City who launched a hunger strike last week to protest the brutal slaying of Malcolm Shabbazz who was the grandson of Malcolm X.. Below is a video of the news report coming out of the DF.. Below that is a link to their blog explaining whats going on in their own words.. We took the liberty of translating two of the entries, but encourage folks to stay up to date

Protest In Mexico City

A demonstration outside the government headquarters in Mexico City •

The Steering Committee of Defense and African Naturalized demanded a dialogue with the city government head Miguel Angel Mancera, to clarify the death of Malcolm Latif, otherwise continue with the hunger strike in front holding government offices of the Federal District since 4 July.

Wilner Metelus, CCDNAM president, said Monday afternoon met with the DF government secretary, Hector Serrano, to reach an agreement.
However, the official said that the committee has not been clear in the demands made by a letter submitted to the Government on 18 June.

“This morning with Serrano invited me to discuss my application, but it says that my claims are not accurate. We will not lift the hunger strike without having a meeting with the presence of Mancera, enough is enough, not racism, that must end, “he said.

He said that all they ask to know is what happened with the death of Latif Shabazz and the Nigerian’s Echidenu Isaac, who was killed two years ago, the same day as the death of the grandson of activist Malcolm X, near the station Metro San Antonio Abad.

He also assured that the four police officers involved in the death of Echidenu are free and the Committee can not allow the same impunity for Latif.
“We know that our brothers abuse are receiving from the police, with pressures and threats. Echinedu Isaac’s death was a hate crime, it’s a shame, “he said.
He noted that at the meeting, Serrano could not provide information regarding the case of Latif and asked to forward a new letter, with clear requests about what is required by the organization.

“They listen to us, we are citizens (…) in the letter ask to have a meeting with Mancera to know how Echinedu Isaac died in the investigation were quite a few mistakes, and also asked to know what happened to the video of the death of Latif” added

protest for Malcom Shabbazz

Mexico • Members of the Citizens’ Committee Defense not Naturalized and Afro-Mexicans began a hunger strike outside the headquarters of the Federal District, in protest of the results in the murder of the grandson of activist Malcolm X in Garibaldi, occurred in May .

Metelus Wilner, president of the organization, considered that there is sufficient provision to two Eastern Prison this nightclub waiters, who are accused of killing Malcolm Shabazz, so requested a meeting with the president of the capital, Miguel Angel Mancera.

“We delivered a letter from May 18 to have an audience with the prime minister about the case of our brother Malcolm Shabazz because we believe that there is no progress, there are only two detainees and do not know what is happening with the other responsible” said.

Metelus revealed that he met with the Secretary of Government, Hector Serrano, but its intention is that the holder receives the GDF to discuss the progress of the Attorney General of the DF, as well as others in terms of discrimination suffered by police.

The civil association representative said that during the administration of Marcelo Ebrard four policemen killed a Nigerian in San Antonio Abad Station of the Metro, and “are now free”, so he said, do not want to repeat this situation.

3 Dope Songs to Mark July 4th, Independence Day & American Dominance

American Flag soldToday is July 4th, Independence Day which is an interesting concept when you consider how are independence is now being compromised by those increasing erosion on our Civil and Human Rights by our government and the multi-national corporations that back them. Over the years we’ve seen billions spent to buy up politicians via lobbying efforts and the emergence of official partnerships via ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council ) where corporations write laws that are later championed by elected officials. Its patriotism at its finest, if you have millions and billions.

Speaking of which, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mark Independence Day by acknowledging a disturbing trend that is best personified by New York’s billionaire Mayor Michael Bloomberg. This is a man who once famously said NYPD which is 40 thousand strong, is his own private army. He than commenced to allow that police department to cripple our independence by having them deploy an invasive policy called Stop and Frisk..

Under Bloomberg, his private army have executed stopped and frisked over 5 million times, with 85-90% of being Black and Brown men.. Less than 10% of those stops were found to be in violation of any law, minor or major.. Yet in spite of massive complaints and a number of high profiles cases of police killings and brutality during stop and frisk encounters, Bloomberg as said the police need to stop more Black people and that they are going hard on too many white folks….

Last week NY’s City Council recently voted to reign in some of the stop and frisk tactics.. the billionaire Mayor got pissed and is now investing his personal fortunes into launching campaigns against anyone who opposed stop and frisk..

Seems like Mayor Bloomberg & Police Commissioner Ray Kelly are heavily borrowing from the sordid legacies of LAPD Chiefs Chief William H Parker & Darryl Gates

Mayor Bloomberg & NY Police Commissioner Ray Kelly wanna up the ante with Stop and Frisk

Again, I cite Bloomberg and his antics because he personifies the growing trend in America that we should peep this independence day.. That would be Corporate dominance and tyranny, the privatization of public space and goods.

This July 4th we should note that in the name of so-called national security our independence is marked by major telecom and internet companies collecting personal data from millions of people for the NSA. Many of those people later down the road may face scenarios where they have to prove their innocence rather than be proven guilty of any sort of crime or in the case of this data collecting ‘associated’ with folks connected to terrorism.. Those same corporations while wrapped in the flag of  ‘patriotism’ have used the media outlets they own to hire pundits who will not only justify towing the party line, but will enthusiastically cheer what many see as fascism…

M1 and Obama NationOur Independence Day is now marked by a huge increase in private prisons  and detention centers and harsh new laws that make it easy for anyone to get caught up and become a long-term resident in these facilities. It’s now known that in 2013 a sound monetary investment may be in private prison stocks.. This is something that several our most popular TV and Cable outlets have found to be the case, hence they’ve invested.. Yes I’m talking about you Viacom which includes MTV and BET.. Yes, I’m talking about you Time Warner..

Today should not be a day to blindly shoot of fire works and stuff a bunch of hot dogs down our throats.. It should be a day we reflect on the imperialistic direction this country has turned and what sort of things we can do to both raise awareness and craft solutions. This should be a day that we all ask ourselves, how did a country which was founded in 1776 with the backdrop and official policies that supported Native American genocide and African people being enslaved, 235 years later, still be vicious and oppressive to many of its people and folks around the world.

Today we should be questioning our foreign policy far too often supports ruthless dictators, undermines duly elected leaders and has a policy of bringing about regime change when leaders we don’t like stand up to us..We wont even talk about our Drone policy which has brought terror to the lands of people who’se countries the average American couldnt find on a map if quizzed. Much of foreign policy is driven by the companies and corporations that make up the Military Industrial Complex.. Again the key word to all this privatization.

If you wanna be a true Patriot, question our government and hold those who make bad and unlawful decisions accountable

Below are 3 Dope Songs to Mark Independence Day.. along with several bonus songs that give us some compelling perspectives about America, Home of the Free Land of the Brave..

Brother Ali ‘Uncle Sam Goddamn’.. This is an honest and heartfelt song where Minneapolis based Brother Ali ask the tough questions of Uncle Sam and of himself who lives within these lands…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46l236O7Iv8

Immortal Technique  ‘4th Branch’.. This is a classic song from this Harlem based emcee. The 4th branch has always been the media and in this song he shows how its been used to corrupt people’s ideology. Often times its that same media that beats the drums of war under the guise of Patriotism..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSfk0wLs4EE

Flipsyde ‘US History’ This Oakland based group literally flipped the script, by doing a song about the rise of the world’s biggest Super Power.. It’s a history lesson all of us should be taught in school. Its also a song that gotta lot of love all over the world..

George Zimmerman

George Zimmerman

I’m Loving what Pittsburgh rapper Jasiri X just did around this George Zimmerman Trial..here’s what he had to say:

I decided to put my thoughts about the Zimmerman trial, the ruling on the Voting Rights Act, and Race in America into a 16 bar verse:

Oh you was born black welcome to the curse race

Oh you was born brown you sure this is your birthplace

This is America the home of the white man

Where every other American gets a hyphen

People of color police shoot us on site man

And then be like damn I was just frightened

See just the color of my skin is intimidating

Here I’m a criminal just based on my pigmentation

We need God our only mass is incarceration

We need Jesus cause these preachers got the heart of Satan

They toast to our death celebrating with ice cream

Vanilla with the cake cone must be a white thing

They wanna stop us from voting well what do rights mean?

If the end result of our struggle can just be wiped clean

And Zimmerman is a creepy ass cracka

A racist child murdering liar and bad actor

Thoughts on Today’s BART Strike, Unions and the Value of Workers

Bart TrainSomeone was complaining about today’s BART strike, talking about how it was a drag because traffic was gonna be messed up… Yes of course its gonna be messed up.. That’s the purpose of a strike to shut down business and show the importance workers have to a larger system.. That’s shown when vital services they provide are with held..

If workers as a whole, were stronger and understood their true value and weren’t in such economic dire straits, they would’ve been in a position to call their respective places of employment and say ‘No way am I coming into work if there’s no public transportation’ ..They’d understand that it is not right where CEOs make 320x more than their workers..

Many folks look at unions and say its wrong for them to collectively bargain, while remaining silent as managers and CEOs collectively build to set prices and policies via Trade organizations, lobbying groups and other associations we ain’t even heard about..

Some are upset that union workers are pushing back and demanding a raise, because they haven’t gotten one in 5 years as gas has increased, food has gone up and average rents increase to $3700-4000k in SF for two bedrooms and clearing $2700 in parts of Oakland.. In short Living costs have increased dramatically while living wages remain stagnant or in the case of city workers in Oakland who are also on strike today have decreased 10%…Bottom line is the average worker deserves more, especially when they are working at companies like BART, Wal-Mart and other outlets that had made nice profits..

On the flip side, for those who are in unions and deal with the public day in and day out.. Ideally union folks need to make sure that those in their ranks are more gracious to the people they serve.. Far too many of us have come across rude dismissive workers who left bad tastes in our mouths so much so, that when strikes come up, you hear remarks like ‘F– them Folks’ vs ‘Right on I’m with Ya..’

In my particular case, I’m shouting out the white guy at 20th street BART station who wears glasses and works the booth.. I’m that customer you didn’t wanna help when my ticket got jammed because you thought I was some ‘black guy from Oakland trying to scam the system’ vs a paying a customer who wound up paying a second fare because you ignored my requests…. Remember me? I should post your picture but I’m smart enough to know the fight for workers rights should not hinge on the bad experience one had with a particular individual, but sadly many will..

Hence this a reminder for those who are in unions to make sure public support is there and that starts with good interactions..That includes Oakland Parking enforcement folks who are also on strike today.. All of us are struggling to get by… Many of us are one paycheck away from financial upheaval. Many of us are underpaid and don’t need the extra hassle.

At the same time, we who are encountering workers should bear in mind their job is probably super wack in terms of pay and benefits, leaving them short-changed, so we too can give them a break.. In short like they say: Game Recognize Game.. How about we adopt the understanding Worker recognize Worker and push for all to have better tomorrows

Anyway Good luck on the strike.. Get a good contract..and If I have to deal with a massive traffic jam or don’t have all the city services needed for today for that to happen, so be it.. It’s a small price to pay in a world that is defined by a 1% vs 99% dynamic..

RIP Grandmaster Jim Kelly..One of the Martial Arts Iconic Figures Has Passed

Jim KellyJust got word, one of the greatest and most influential martial artists Jim Kelly aka Blackbelt Jones has passed away.. I recall seeing Jim Kelly as a kid alongside Bruce Lee.. His presence was appreciated and inspired many, especially at a time when Black folks were really into defining themselves on their own terms..When we talk about the influence Bruce Lee and his movies had on Hip Hop, we can’t really have that conversation and not include Jim Kelly..

believe it or not I knew Jim Keely not just for his martial arts movies, but also because he played tennis, which was my sport growing up.. Him and basketball great Dr J played tennis.. and that was an inspiration to me..

Not sure why he passed, as far as I knew, he wasn’t sick, but for far too many of us, we hadn’t been checking for him the way we should..I know he was making appearances at events like Wondercon, but we weren’t shouting him out in songs and making those references like we do with so many others like a John Gotti..I was also curious as to whether or not Wesley Snipes had ever worked with Kelly being that he came up at a time when Kelly had a strong presence

RIP Blackbelt Jones

Voter Restriction Laws Will Impact More Than Just Black People

Davey-D-yellow-225-frameJust peeping the news this morning about the House not even debating the Immigration Reform Bill.. Granted , many of us know the bill itself is kinda weak, but that’s not why the House won’t debate it.. They wont debate because politically they know there can and will be no consequence..

Its pretty certain that most folks who are impacted by immigration reform, which is more than just Latinos are not gonna vote for the GOP folks who wanna shut this down.. However, because of redistricting and now the ability to enact crazy Voter Restriction Laws, thanks to the SCOTUS decision, many sitting in the house know they have nothing to fear at the polls..

This brings me to my next point, yes we all know the story of courageous Black folks marching to Selma in 1965 to get Voting Restrictions removed and in doing so, they were brutally beaten and sprayed with water hoses. This has led to the face of voting rights being a Black one.. The cold reality is at the end of the day Restrictive voting laws will not simply be used against Black people…

Wars of suppression have been waged against all sorts of folks ranging from students to union members to Muslims to other People of Color etc..There is no doubt that restrictive voting laws will be put in place to make it difficult for specific populations to get to the polls or get registered.

Do not think for one second, that folks are not sitting in backrooms redrawing voting maps and crafting news laws to hinder voting attempts for college students who are set to see their loan rates double…One law that was struck down and likely to be resurrected will force students to go back to their home towns versus voting in the student communities they reside..

It was already tested in think Tanks and realized that many students Black, white etc, have challenges with getting all the government issued IDs that they will require for voting.. The hope and anticipation is many will simply stay home..

There will be more than a million people in the streets of San Francisco at the Pride parade. Folks in power see such large numbers as a potential political windfall or a potential threat to political power. To those in the LGBT community don’t get too comfortable in thinking that those upset about the recent Supreme Court decision who are sitting in seats of power are not looking at ways to suppress votes where they find large gay and lesbian populations..Dont think they dont fear political payback from you because of the insidious ways they opposed you..

Voter suppressionThe focus has been on national elections but as you can see from the drama that unfolded and will continue to unfold in places like Texas, the political action is stateside and locally.. For example, Texas state senator Wendy Davis the women who filibustered SB5 in Texas is targeted for redistricting.. In short they gonna remove her seat. And now Texas is putting in place one of the strictest Voter ID laws in the country.. Any state with a majority minority pop can expect to see similar patterns play out..

Bottom line is everyone needs to be involved in pushing back.. Whether you live in places like Michigan where they have crazy governors assigning mostly Black and Brown cities to be run by ‘business managers’ to liberal enclaves like Austin, Tx where they have carved up neighborhoods to people living next door to each other are in separate legislative districts that are based 500 miles to states like Florida that has made it a felony for third parties to register people.. everyone is impacted..

One of the first things people should do, is no matter what, get the proper IDs.. There is more than a year before mid-term elections.. no matter what get that ID if for any reason just to smash back and upend these think tank plans.. Folks who are doing GOTV work need to do more than just register folks.. It needs to be a priority to make sure folks got their documents and funds to get them..That should be a fight while others work to change the laws

To those who are going on tours or who make the rounds speaking at college campuses, churches etc, you should insist that at every speaking engagement, there is a voter registration and ID table..I’ve gotten commitments from several artists who will make sure this happens when they play.. but others need to join that effort..

vote No to Voting-signWatch out for well-funded disinformation campaigns including some that will say if you owe money, child support etc, you are not allowed to register or vote.. Look out for campaigns telling you Not to vote because it doesn’t matter and electoral politics is a farce….It’ll be slickly packaged as being anti-authority. Some of will manifest itself in the form of ‘whisper campaigns’. Some of it will come in the form selected spokes people who suddenly have media access  burst on the scene and start telling you none of this matters.. A good look at the documentary Merchants of Cool can spell out how these types of techniques and other stealth marketing techniques are effectively used.

And ‘yes’, there are some folks will say this who are sincere and have genuine political rationale.. But right now you will see more of that from folks who are being paid to keep you from going to the polls.. Check the track records and see what work and results of that work from people telling you to stay home.. Weigh those findings with what you feel you can achieved by voting someone who you believe in into office or a proposition that can put in place or strike down a law..

We saw this during the Healthcare debates when executives, actors and stand ins were pretending to be grassroots organizers were going to townhall to townhall disrupting it and saying no to HCR.. Initially people thought it was the average Joe, later it was discovered to be paid plants..Just know that will be happening to keep you away from the polls.

Voter Suppression will not be limited to Black folks from this day forward, so hopefully folks from other groups keep this fight top of mind….
