Robin Thicke Launches Pre-Emptive Lawsuit on Marvin Gaye’s Estate to Protect ‘Blurred Lines”

Robin ThickeSo singer Robin Thicke has been making a lot of noise this summer with his hit song ‘Blurred Lines‘ . Many upon hearing it thought it sounded remarkably similar to a hit song done damn near 30+ years ago by the late Marvin Gaye. The name of that song was ‘Got to Give It Up’..

In order to avoid a contentious lawsuit, Thicke and producers/ song writers Pharrel Williams and rapper T.I. decided to do what some are describing as a pre-emptive lawsuit against Marvin Gaye’s estate.  According to what was written in the Hollywood Reporter…

The suit claims the Gaye family is alleging that “Blurred Lines” and Gaye’s “Got to Give It Up” “feel” or “sound” the same, and that the “Gaye defendants are claiming ownership of an entire genre, as opposed to a specific work.”

As for Funkadelic, there’s said to be claimed similarity between Thicke’s hit and Funakedlic’s “Sexy Ways.”

“But there are no similarities between plaintiffs’ composition and those the claimants allege they own, other than commonplace musical elements,” states the lawsuit. “Plaintiffs created a hit and did it without copying anyone else’s composition.”

Marvin GayeThe suit goes on to note that the intent of producing the song the way they did was to evoke and era and being nostalgic of a song and having it reflected in a composition is not copyright infringement.. The Gaye Estate sees it otherwise..They see it as a straight bite of the original.

This is an interesting tact because for years many have argued that creativity in music has been somewhat stifled due to lawsuits claiming that melody, riff or phrase whether redone or sampled belongs to someone else and thus lots of money must be paid to the label.

On the other hand the way that music made is by building off of whats come before where you add your own twist and take..In short its reworking of the song. It sounds like Thicke and company are trying to lay down ground work to ensure they don’t get caught up in a situation that often winds up being all about exploitation then it is honoring and preserving the work of an artist..You can peep a copy of the lawsuit below

Clear Channel’s KMEL Unceremoniously Fires Popular Bay Area DJ Chuy Gomez After 20 Years

chuy gomezBay Area residents are waking up this morning, shocked and saddened to learn that after 20 years, popular long time, Bay Area fixture Chuy Gomez was unceremoniously let go from radio station KMEL..the so-called ‘People’s Station‘.. There was no Good-Bye to the listeners.. No on air thanks you for his years of hard work..There was no going away party..  Gomez came in yesterday and was basically shown the door..All he got was a  ‘Peace out‘..

For those who don’t know, Chuy was very well liked, always down to make room on his show for folks and pretty damn good at his job…But sadly Chuy works for Clear Channel and industry trades have been talking for weeks about how this Bain Capitol owned media empire owes billions of dollars and that they would soon be doing massive cut backs, further consolidation and a lot more smoke and mirror tricks like voice tracking on air deejays who are made to pretend they are in your market while prerecording shows in other cities.

Internally Clear Channel employees are finding their pocketbooks being hit.. Those who make ‘too much’  find their salaries or benefits are reduced or their duties vastly expanded to the point of being overwhelmed as they are made to take on the jobs that were once handled by 2 or 3 people.

Others are simply replaced with thirsty, naive folks who are willing to work for super cheap wages. This is happening at stations all over the country. Some say that’s just the way radio works. Others say its simple exploitation. Looks like longtime radio vet Chuy got caught in that chopping block..

Now because of Chuy’s talent and popularity its anticipated that he’ll land on his feet somehow someway. After 20 years its assumed that he got a halfway decent severance package.. The video he posted on line suggests he’s good..

What’s problematic is that listeners who have literally grown up to him are left hanging. For tens of thousands of listeners Chuy is their favorite personality. He wasn’t your prima donna jock who would only go out in the community when paid. He genuinely likes people and has always made himself available. He comes from the school of radio where its about building community.

But sadly the public airwaves where such relationships are supposed to be fostered are disrupted by wealthy bankers who now own many of these big radio outlets and are determined to make money at all costs. This has resulted in many markets have syndicated morning shows..

Kevin Brown

Kevin Brown

So for Bay Area listeners in the past 2 years they have lost 5-7 iconic long time radio personalities. Folks are still reeling from KGO which was number 1 for over 30 years. An out of town company Cumulus came in and got ride of everyone from Ray Taliafero to Gene Burns.. Folks were devastated..

Next Bay Area fans were dealt a blow when long time jock Cousin Kevin Brown who was on KBLX for a good 20 years was fired, new station owners found it was cheaper to bring in the syndicated morning show from Steve Harvey. This change happened last year resulting in thousands being deprived of local flavor and engagement on their favorite station.

3 thousand miles away in New York City, folks are dealing with last week’s mass firing of all the popular social justice deejays that were on WBAI including the legendary Gary Byrd.  Many of those jocks like Chuy were near and dear to the hearts of their listeners..

Back in the Bay Area, prior to Kevin Brown being let go, , popular morning show host Renel was let go and replaced by syndicated host Tom Joyner. Listeners were outraged and stopped listening to the station in droves.. Joyner was eventually let go and Renel brought back..Many are wondering if lightening can strike twice as thousands of people have been posting on line that they have no intention of listening to KMEL ever again.. Will a boycott of the station work??

Complicating all this are the new PPM rating systems that operate in such a way that all it takes is two or three people to switch stations to mess up a station’s standings. This has resulted in many stations ignoring the wishes and concerns of the majority of listeners to hone in on those very few who have the devices.  Stations live and die by those handful of PPM device holders.

Many deejays especially those on urban outlets have been encouraged not to get too controversial or make waves on a political tip for fear of offending those few with monitoring devices. Hence the controversies that are frequently brought up tend to be around celebrity gossip which have been deemed safe… So if one has to choose between talking about the outrage over the Zimmerman verdict or a police shooting versus Kanye West beating up a camera man or Kendick Lamar housing someone on a song then the latter choices will more often than not be made.

Chuy Gomez flyerAs for Chuy Gomez, after 20 years just about everyone has a favorite story or memory. For me, I recall when Chuy first came to KMEL and was doing evenings with Rosary..Their show was dope.. Those were fun times.

Before that, I recall Chuy being sidekick to a deejay named Mancow Muller who banked off Chuy and got all this credit for a stunt that Chuy actually pulled off with his homies.. Many will recall when Chuy stopped traffic on the Bay Bridge so he could get a shave.. He was imitating then President Bill Clinton who at that time, famously held up airplane traffic to get a hair cut.. The story made national news with Mancow taking all the bows and getting all the credit resulting in him getting a multi-million dollar contract for a radio station in Chicago. Chuy not too long after left then rival station KLYD, came over to KMEL and got busy..

There are tons of stories folks can tell about Chuy..As noted he is good at what he does and hopefully he lands on his feet elsewhere.. With his departure, it’s truly the end of an era.. Sana G who we know from doing middays and blows things up on the gossip tip will now be doing mornings.

Ideally people should be pushing for media outlets that responsive to community needs from being responsive to the local artist community to be accessible and informative around pressing community issues above and beyond a few PSAs..

One thing that was challenging was that when Chuy would interview guests who had info about the community they would sweat him if they appeared before 9 am when everyone was listening or or he kept them on for ‘too long’.

At other times he would get in trouble and even suspended for speaking ‘spanglish‘ on the air.. The management didn’t want listeners getting confused with KMEL’s once rival station and now sister station KYLD which targeted Latinos..Behind the scenes in cities where  corporate outlets own multiple stations the audiences are studied and carefully carved up by ethnicity in a colonizing type of way with little room for going out of your lane to appeal to others even if you are of the same background.

There is so much that can be done to improve these outlets, so hopefully wherever Chuy lands its a place where his talent is respected and has much more freedom.. Bay Area listeners deserve that..Perhaps they will get together and throw Chuy a proper Goodbye Party since Cheap Channel aka Clear Channel didn’t have the decency and respect.

NYPD Storm Home Looking for Wrong Man-Result? Innocent Father of 8 is Dead

Earlier this week a judge ruled that the controversial practice  of Stop and Frisk violated the constitutional rights of individuals and that New York City police would have to be monitored and the tactic would have to be retooled.

An angry Mayor Michael Bloomberg along with NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly held a press conference that to say the least was shocking and out right appalling.. Words can’t begin to describe the arrogance. But to sum it up Bloomberg who once called NYPD his private army, claimed that NYPD was saving the lives of Black and Brown people and that his cops needed to be intrusive as a way to stop future crimes even if 90% of the people they engaged were innocent..

He basically concluded that his police have done no wrong, he didn’t want them wearing cameras and that while its true many are afraid of the police, he said it was a cultural thing and that’s basically too bad..

Raymond Kelly although not stating this at the press conference had previously noted that the young teens his police most frequently stopped, needed to have a healthy concern (‘fear’) that the police at any given time may step to them..Peep the press conference below..

HKR-stop and frisk press conference

Carlos Alcis

Carlos Alcis

Having a fear of the police is a goal.. It’s important to keep this in mind as you read this tragic story of police in Brownsville, Brooklyn where NYPD quite frequently conduct Stop and Frisk.. Here a father of 8 named Carlos Alcis  was literally scared to death when police erroneously raided his home looking for man wearing red shorts who punched a girl in the face and stole her cell phone..

The victim had a 16-year-old son who was asleep at the time and wearing red shorts.. Police woke him up, made go outside to be identified. He wound up being the wrong guy,. Police then returned inside the home and began ransacking the  place looking for ‘evidence’ even as the victim of the crime said he wasn’t the guy.. An upset and shaken Carlos Alcis began questioning  the police and then dropped dead..

Police then made the son perform mouth to mouth resuscitation on his dying father. The police then went door to door in rthe building looking for the suspect. It was something out of storm trooper horror movie. Here’s how the NY Daily News breaks this down..

Outraged loved ones say a Brooklyn, N.Y., father of eight was scared to death — literally — after cops swarmed his apartment while searching for someone who slugged a woman and stole her cell phone.

Carlos Alcis, 43, dropped dead Thursday from an apparent heart attack as his helpless wife and four of his children protested the fruitless intrusion in Brownsville, relatives said.

Compounding the tragedy, cops asked Alcis’ 16-year-old son Emmanuel, whom they rousted out of bed and wrongly suspected of being the thief, to help perform CPR. The family also claimed it took nearly 30 minutes for an ambulance to reach their Rockaway Parkway home — just blocks from Brookdale University Hospital…

The paper goes on to also note..

Emmanuel Alcis, who was wearing red basketball shorts at the time, said he was in his bed when a cop shone  a flashlight in his face.

“They took me out to the backyard. They asked a girl, ‘Is that him?’ She said, ‘It’s not him,’” said Emmanuel, who was allowed to go back inside.

He said his father suddenly collapsed and started shaking. The teen said police continued to search the apartment, checking under beds and piles of clothes — even as blood started coming from his father’s mouth. He said an officer finally checked his father for a pulse, then asked him to blow air into his dad’s mouth as they started chest compressions.

May needless to say are just stunned, especially on the heels of a ruling that also came down last week where police in the Bronx would not be indicted for killing Ramarley Graham who unbeknownst to him, was followed by NYPD who suspected he had a gun. Police busted into Graham’s house and shot him to death in front of his grandmother and little brother and never found a gun. But somehow the profiling and lethal encounter was deemed justified…

In this case police busted in the Alcis’ house and are now trying to claim they were let in, in spite of neighbors counter claims and pictures shown in the Daily News of the busted lock.. We’ll wait to see how Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his police commissioner justify this latest horrific mishap  by NYPD..They’ll probably say the young son shouldn’t have been wearing red shorts..

It’s hard to not read this story and then recall Bloomberg’s dismissal of concerns about people being scared of the police. many may also be left wondering, since when did NYPD go door to door in an apartment building looking for a cell phone..

What the Hell Is Russell Simmons Thinking? A Parody Sex Tape of Harriet Tubman?

Russell Simmons

Russell Simmons

I’m at a loss for words..earlier today, rap mogul Russell Simmons who has been in a war of words with CNN Anchor Don Lemon for accusing Black folks of being their own worst enemies to systemic racism, has sent out this video.. Normally I wouldn’t give this the time of day, but when you’re a 50 + year old man who is deemed a success story many should aspire toward, then this can’t be left unchecked..

I sent Russell a quick note to see if his account was hacked.. It has to be.. I just can’t believe he would co-sign this.. especially after all the flack that erupted around Lil Wayne making disparaging sex laden remarks about Emmett Till and Jay Z calling Harry Belafonte ‘Boy’.. I’m at a loss and have come to the conclusion , there is a class of Black folks who have lots of resources but should be written off..  But below is a screen shot of his account with the video which hopefully he will remove pronto..If he doesn’t middle finger to Russell on that one.. To women out there, please note that there are many brothers who don’t co-sign this.. There are many who do not hate our sisters that we would joke about this.. Too many of our sisters were rape while enslaved…. There is No excuse for this….

And No Russell has not hit me back on this.. I’m hoping his account was hacked but the video says otherwise..

History Meets Hip Hop: Bridging the Gap Between Harry B & Jay Z

Screen Shot 2013-08-14 at 6.04.46 AMRadio host and journalist Syreeta Gates  did a segment on Esther Armah‘s Wake Up Call in NYC  on WBAI  called History Meets Hip Hop. The other week she addressed the Harry belafonte and Jay Z flap with a serious indepth piece that gives a serious history lesson that sought to bridge the gap between the two men and many in their respective generations..

This is not so much to belabor the point, but to give folks some serious history  about two very popular iconic figures.. People should take a good listen to this and come away better informed.. Thank You Syreeta.

As Hip Hop Turns 40…Never Forget the B-Boys & B-Girls (Salute to the Dancers)

Break dance AsiaWith Hip Hop turning 40, its important to remember there are several facets to the culture.. A lot of attention is spent on rappers (emcees) which is understandable being that they are the most commercially viable… However, we should note that globally speaking Hip Hop dance (b-boying )is just as popular in many parts of the world..

The competition is just as fierce if not more so then it is within rap.. In fact there’s talk about bringing B-boying to the X games.. Even if that doesn’t happen, there are enough well attended competitions all over the planet where folks come to see the best and brightest do their thing on the dance floor.

I’m loving how folks in this recent video got seriously busy on the dance tip..Hopefully it reminds us to not limit our creativity.. Hopefully it inspires us to push the envelope and make Hip Hop something that is fun even as its competitive.. This just made my day..

Here’s a couple of more videos to remind you just how dope the dance aspect is within Hip Hop from today and from the past..Below is a recent ‘Breakdance’ (bboy competition)

Tennessee Judge Orders Couple to Change Child’s Name from Messiah to Martin

Messiah TennesseIt’s always interesting to see  in many of the states that demand government stay out of people’s lives, the government does so.. They cut school funding, healthcare benefits, food stamp programs, child care programs, unemployment benefits etc.. But when in comes to trivial matters like what to name your child, the government wants to go HAM..case in point..

(WBIR-Newport) A Newport mother is appealing a court’s decision after a judge ordered her son’s name be changed from “Messiah.”

Jaleesa Martin and the father of Messiah could not agree on a last name, which is how they ended up at a child support hearing in Cocke County Chancery Court on Thursday.

That is when the first name came into question.

Child Support Magistrate Lu Ann Ballew serves the 4th Judicial District of Tenn. including the following counties: Cocke, Grainger, Jefferson, and Sevier.

The name change was part of Judge Ballew’s case; however, the parents did not think the first name would be changed.

Judge Ballew ordered the 7-month-old’s name be “Martin DeShawn McCullough.” It includes both parent’s last names but leaves out Messiah.

“The word Messiah is a title and it’s a title that has only been earned by one person and that one person is Jesus Christ,” Judge Ballew said.

peep rest of story at http://www.wbir.com/news/article/283997/2/Judge-orders-babys-name-be-changed-from-Messiah

The judge says that because the county is conservative and very religious, the name Messiah would put the child at odds with other townsfolk, hence she wants the name changed to Martin..

When asked how she felt about the name Jesus which is a popular Latino name, the judge said she thought about it, but it had no bearing in this case.. My guess is she’ll probably flip out anyone with that name as well..

Let’s not get started on how people like Jay-Z who calls himself J-Hova.. Wonder if the judge gets mad if they show Jesus as Black..I wonder if Jesus himself is tripping?

In any case peep the video below, say good bye to separation of church and state..and remember Tennessee is one of those states that wants to remove slavery from its text books, especially as it pertains to the founding fathers..

There’s another good take on this story that focuses on the Fear of a Black Messiah.. Check that out via the homie Truth Minista at http://nowarningshotsfired.blogspot.com/2013/08/fear-of-black-messiah.html

Oprah Defends Jay Z Says She Loves Magna Carter- Belafonte Gives Context to His Criticisms

OprahWell folks its official.. Oprah Winfrey has spoken and weighed in on the Jay Z/ Harry Belafonte flap.. The woman who once famously ‘hated’ and disparaged Hip Hop by not inviting rappers on her show and had artists like; Ice Cube, Ludacris and 50 Cent to name few, criticizing her,  says that she listened to Jay Z’s new album and absolutely loves it.

She went on to say that actor/ activist Harry Belafonte needs to better understand Jay Z. She noted that Jay Z does charity through his music and artistry..

I don’t know what else there is to say when Oprah lays it down like that.. Many are still bugging off the fact that it wasn’t too long ago that Oprah said she wasn’t befriending folks who use the N word, so it’s not quite sure how and why she is praising Jay Z unless, she got a clean copy of his albums.. In any case, me personally,  I’m gonna gracefully tell the Queen of Talk to have a seat and leave it at that.

Below are two videos folks should watch..The first is Oprah speaking on her movie the Butler and the Jay Z Belafonte flap.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCDjf4JoNV0

Harry Belafonte Beat StreetOprah says that Harry Belafonte needs to better understand, many feel that folks need to better understand Harry. Unlike Oprah, Belafonte early on put his money and famous reputation behind Hip Hop by financing and producing the iconic movie Beat Street..

Belafonte at 83 has not missed a beat as he still routinely meets with artists to engage in projects. His latest efforts saw him working with everyone from Chuck D to David Banner to Yasiin Bey to Jasiri X to Talib Kweli and Bun B involves bring attention to juveniles who are locked up..

Below is a video where he clarifies his remarks and gives context to his initial criticism of Jay Z and Beyoncé including the fact that he didn’t just rush out to the press and bash them as many have suggested..His remarks were part of a bigger conversation..

Remembering Some of My First & Favorite Break Beats as Hip Hop Turns 40

Kool Herc

Kool Herc

Today we celebrate the birth of Hip Hop with that first party at 1520 Sedgwick Ave in the Bronx..It was a back to school dance thrown by DJ Kool Herc and his sister Cindy Campbell .. They didn’t call it Hip Hop then.. the name used to describe dances and gatherings back in those days was Jam.. The term Hip Hop first coined by DJ Lovebug Starksi was later adapted and attached to the expressions of B-Boying/ (breakdancing), deejaying, graf and emceeing by Afrika Bambaataa..So the first Hip Hop Jam was 40 years ago today.. August 11th 1973…

With that being said, in my interview with Kool Herc.. I tried to get him to layout all the records he played and in fine fashion Herc would not give me the names.. That’s a long running joke we have.. But he did speak about the groups like Rare Earth and how he rocked them along with James Brown.. who has a ton of songs that dominated early Hip hop jams

I was asked yesterday what was the first Hip Hop record I ever heard.. Being a kid of the 70s, my first Hip Hop jam was not Rapper’s Delight by Sugar Hill Gang but instead it was records that would go onto to be mainstays at all Hip Hop parties..Songs like Chic‘s Good Times, Parliament‘s Knee Deep, Zapp’s More Bounce to the Ounce, Anita Ward’s Ring My Bells and Cheryl Lynn‘s To Be Real were some of the mainstream songs that went on to be flipped because of the percussion break downs..

Other cuts like Bob Jame‘s Take Me to the Mardis Gras aka Breaking Bells,  Apache by the Ventures and later Incredible Bongo Band (the Bronx National Anthem), Jimmy Castor ‘Its Just Begun’ , Babe Ruth The Mexican, and Funky Drummer by James Brown or CerroneRocket in the Pocket‘ sped up to 45 rpm were vintage..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEsTY46f1AE

Ralph McDonald

Ralph McDonald

But the first breakbeat jam I ever heard was on the Circle Line boat in June of 1977..This was a boat that took you up the Hudson River.. It was first time I saw people get on the floor and do what we call B-Boying..Back then they called it Rocking..  The song was Jam on the Groove by Ralph McDonald..What caught me was the fact that the DJ kept playing the record over and over again.. He wasn’t mixing or anything fancy like that.. He just would start the record over and everyone would dance ..we were doing the freak back then.. When the percussion break down came we formed a circle and watched these kids rock..

Below is a list of jams that were among the first I heard and immensely enjoyed rocking to..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wy5uXqtVRvs

2-Right up there with Ralph McDonald on that same party I heard this jam by Harlem Underground Band.. Cheeba Cheeba was infectious. I had no idea who it was until much later when I grabbed copies for myself on Paul Winely records which was starting to put out some early breaks..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRyyoQo0qj4

3-First time I heard this break Music Taking Over by the Jacksons was via Grandmaster Flash when he tore it up at Bronx High School of Science at dance he did in ’78 He was ripping this song every which way and sent a lot of people home to re-listen to their Jackson 5 records.. There were several places to cut this jam.. Flash ripped it toward the middle where Michael Jackson sings  ‘Lets Dance, Lets Dance

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSYKhlnXfnE

4-I used to hear this record all the time at block parties, on people’s boom boxes and out people’s windows ..Who knew 4 white guys from Germany would be a long time companion to Hip Hop.. Trans Europa Express by Kraftwerk  It’ll forever be a classic  and essential record..The other cut that folks used to rock my Kraftwerk was ‘We Are the Robots‘..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMVokT5e0zs

5-As an emcee this was one of my all-time favorite records to rhyme over.. Quite few deejays loved to cut this up both at the beginning as well as in the middle where you find an incredible break..Edwin Starr was that guy back in the days..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7aeGA4NfkI

6-Another break beat emcees fiended for was this classic from Juice called Catch a Groove..Folks gotta remember back the days the deejay was the main attraction, not the emcee, so it wasn’t like you could go order the deejay to play this cut, but when he did, everyone would crowd around and try and get their turn on the mic.. When I first got my copies they were on 45s. They cost me like 5 or 10 bucks a piece from Downstairs Records..  Years later I got the 12″ shown here.. The flip side on the 45 was the Sesame Street Song which was also pretty funky..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwBHYradr_o

6-A classic cut that I used to hear all the time around 78 was this gem from Captain Sky.. I always felt he was an off shot of Parliament.. But this was a staple jam

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0lQg4iWuHE

7-This was an essential record.. Everyone looked for the 12″ to get busy on.. New York at that time wasn’t a funk town as compared to what you would hear out west here in Cali.. We was more into James Brown.. but this song made everyone’s speakers shake and folks had no choice but to make a stank face and get down to this groove.. Barkays ‘Holy Ghost‘ was a Holy Grail of a record..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lB5Ysr7Zf4o

8-This was an incredible jam that I first heard Bambaataa rocking probably around ’79 or ’80..  it soon became a staple for just about everybody..Instant Funk’s Funk is On was that jam.. The group definitely had a seat at the table of early Hip Hop..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1O3hDlVRP9E

9-This was an incredible jam that everyone rocked and like Catch a Groove and Just Wanna Do My Thing, it was a record you wanted to rhyme over. For deejays this was a fun record to cut.. Many got creative with it..Its been overlooked and underplayed as far as I’m concerned.. PleasureCelebrate the Good Things‘ was a must.. They had several other songs that were vintage break beats…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUS2cd9dHjc

10-This song was a party starter for sure.. There were two versions of it.. One was more disco sounding the other was more tribal with straight up conga.. Most people sampled the disco version over the years.. It was to this song that everyone did a dance called the Calypso Freak.. Herman Kelly‘s Dance to the Drummer’s Beat.. both versions..

Kool Herc: We are Still Here on the Block as Hip Hop Turns 40 This Weekend

Kool-Herc-the-father-greenAugust 11 1973 should be a day all of us remember, but sadly many have not.. It was on that date that two siblings Clive and Cindy Campbell decided to do a back to school party in order to raise some money for school cloths and supplies.  The party took place in the rec room of their apartment building on 1520 Sedgwick Ave in the West Bronx..  It would be the first of many parties the pair would throw..

Cindy was a budding entrepreneurial  type who was good organizer who was the backbone to putting this party together. Her brother Clive was a hulking athletic type who had access to his father’s speakers, and a nice collection of funky records including pristine cuts from his idol James Brown.

It was at this party that Clive who was just starting to deejay and had taken on the nickname Herc, short for Hercules, would introduce a new style of deejaying that would eventually take hold and change the world.  What he did was repeat the percussion breakdowns of popular songs… he discovered that the crowd reacted when he played the drum beats so rather than wait for song to play all the way through , he would go straight to the breakdown.. Herc would eventually come up with a system to keep those percussion breaks extended indefinitely. He dubbed it the Merry-Go-Round..  Later we would call them percussion breakdowns, breakbeats.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hw4H2FZjfpo

Koolherc-brown-225While those breakbeats were playing, Herc would talk over the music in style similar to what was known as toasting in his native Jamaica. That toasting style which early on consisted of simple shout outs to people from rival neighborhoods was done as a way to make folks feel important and keep the peace.  Those shout outs would eventually give way to simple rhymes which back in the 70s was called emceeing and today often called rap.

Also while those funky percussion breakdowns were playing through Herc’s huge column speakers, later dubbed the Herculoids, young dancers would hit the dance floor doing new moves inspired by James Brown and Bruce Lee karate flicks.  These dancers would become known as B-Boys and B-Girls..

August 11 1973  at was the birth of what we now call Hip Hop.. Sadly many of the outlets and institutions that have benefitted from this culture have not only NOT acknowledged this date, but with Hip Hop celebrating its 40th year, very few have had year-long celebrations where they big up the history, talk to the pioneers and explore the current state with a goal of taking things to new heights.

2013 will mark the year that we saw the re-election of a president who greatly benefitted from Hip Hop music, culture and the generation of people that identify with the culture.  It was also the year we saw one of the Presidents Hip Hop heroes Jay Z play a key role in helping him get elected. One has to wonder if either man reached out to these pioneers to show support or just simply to say thanks..  Hip Hop has some humble beginnings we should never forget.

Today we caught up with Kool Herc to get his take on the 40th anniversary.  He noted that he’s doing a big event at Center Stage in Central Park on Saturday (August 10th 2013) and that Senator Chuck Schumer will be there.   On the day of Hip Hop’s  anniversary August 11th, Herc will be spinning in the Bronx..

We asked him about what it was like at the first party. Herc noted that he played Rare Earth and that he was surprised there were white guys who could jam so hard.  He learned early on funky music has no color.. He also noted that he played James Brown and talked about the records he got in 1969 after his father took him to see James Brown and Bootsy Collins in concert.

Herc noted that he was blown away from seeing James Brown with two drummers. One of those drummers was Clyde Stubblefield, the man who gave us the classic breakbeat ‘Funky Drummer‘. Herc would eventually meet Stubblefield 3 decades later in Madison, Wisconsin’s First Wave Hip Hop program which comes out of University of Wisconsin.

After Herc ran this down, I tried to get him to give a list of the songs he played that night.. In the 25 years I’ve known Herc, every time I asked, he’s said no… Pioneering deejay Disco Wiz, noted that he too has never been able to get Herc to give up his set list.. But we know one thing.. That night he played Rare Earth..

During our interview Herc stressed that there is no Hip Hop without James Brown..while fellow Hip Hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa sees Sly Stone and George Clinton along with Brown as the key foundations, Herc disagrees.  He says he likes their music and Hip Hop has kept them relevant but its James Brown and James Brown only..

I asked Herc if he was happy with the direction Hip Hop has headed. after 40 years.  He said he’s glad its getting many people employment, but its being misused.   Herc said the people who inspired him are not being recognized and celebrated.

Herc noted that he’s appreciative of the love many have shown him and his sister.as the 40th anniversary comes upon us..At the same time, he and many others are keenly aware of the glaring oversights and dismissal of those who make millions off the culture but care very little about investing back into the culture or sharing its history.

Herc concluded by saying that he and his sister are still on the block  and that they havent gone anywhere.  They are still part of the struggle..In fact Herc says he now finds himself fighting to be a part of what he started..  The irony of that.. Below is our  Hard Knock radio interview

I wanted to include a couple of older interviews we did with Kool Herc so you can get some more detailed history..

In this interview Kool Herc talks about his Jamaican background. He talks about how he grew up in the same township as Bob Marley and he explains how and why Jamaican culture is an important root within Hip Hop.

One important aspect of Jamaican culture Herc speaks to us about is the sound system. In this interview he talks about the type of equipment he used and why he named it the Herculords.

What was really fascinating in this sit down, was hearing Herc go into detail about the different clubs and parties he threw. He describes the clientele which ranged from some of New York’s most notorious sharp dressing mob type gangstas to high school kids from the projects around the way.

Herc gives us a run down of his playlist and talks about his approach for keeping the crowd satisfied. He speaks about his early deejay battles most notably with Pete DJ Jones. He also talks about the importance of funk music and bands like the Incredible Bongo Band.

Herc concludes this first segment by talking about Hip Hop’s early emcees including his own crew member Coke La Rock. Herc also talks about his other crew members including Timmy Tim.

He talks about the role DJ Hollywood played in Hip Hop. He also gives major praise to Mele-Mel and his brother Kid Creole for inventing the style of rap we all embrace to this day.

Cindy-Campbell-225Below we have an interview we did with Kool Herc’s sister Cindy Campbell who is deemed the First lady of Hip Hop. She gives us her take on what went on August 11 1973..

Cindy explains that the party started out as a fundraiser for her to get some school clothes. She talked about how they actually had Old E 800 and Colt 45 being sold there and how it was a 25 cent for women and 50 cent for guys.. They made 500 bucks

She also explained how she herself brought slow jam records for her brother to spin..

Cindy also talks about other deals she’s done for her brother including how she talked Harry Belafonte into making sure Herc’s character was positive in the movie Beat Street.
