12 White Cops Beat up 1 Black Skinny Kid in Boston-What’s Going on Here?

Once again the spectre of police terrorism rears its ugly head. Last week it was the police killing un-armed, Pace College football star Denroy DJ Henry in front of scores of friends in Westchester county NY. This week we catch 12 white police officers beating down a skinny 16 year old kid on a college campus. Twice the kids who were filming were told to put their cameras away, as we see more and more police attempted to intimidate those who film. 12 states have passed laws making it illegal to film cops.

Here’s a press release for a press conference and demands in the wake of this beating

Boston, MA – Local Community Organizers and Activists join with clergy and members of the NAACP and National Action Network to address the latest incidents of violence and police brutality.  In light of recent acts of violence as well as the worldwide release of video depicting the Boston Police in an act of excessive force and police brutality committed against a 16 yr. old African-American male, community groups are joining in a call for the Mayor and Police Commissioner of the City of Boston to listen to and implement the suggestions and recommended strategies of the community.

Jamarhl Crawford, one of the organizers of the group stated, “This press conference has been called after repeated attempts and pleas for the Mayor and Commissioner to open the table to new ideas from fresh voices in order to combat all violence in the city, which includes criminal activity, gun violence as well as police brutality.”  Crawford continued, “We have asked publicly at meetings and privately through emails, letters and staff. We have demonstrated our sincerity and commitment through hard work which is documented and cannot be dismissed. We are community members and we have families that live, work, vote and pay taxes in Boston. Each time we are ignored another incident occurs which only highlights the problems and proves the importance and urgency of the message.”

The group calls for Mayor Menino and Commissioner Ed Davis to immediately take the following steps:

A. Reinstate the CO-OP (Community Ombudsman Oversight Panel) as well as create a Community Civilian Review Board and grant both bodies subpoena powers as well as the ability to initiate their own independent investigations.

B. Thoroughly follow through on past public promises in other cases of questionable police actions ie: Police shooting of Manuel DaVeiga (age 19) in which the results of the investigation were promised to be made public and to date have not been released.

C. Commit to a Public Town Hall style Community meeting to discuss the relationship between the Boston Police Department and communities of color in order to promote healing and restore public faith.

D. Implement the recommendations of MAMLEO (Mass. Assoc. of Minority Law Enforcement Officers) which include 1) appointing officers of color to positions of authority within communities of color as well as 2) utilizing officers of color in both the police and public response to high profile crimes in communities of color.

Tea Party Candidate Says: ‘Minorities Prefer Drug Dealing’…Woman Stomped by Tea Party Supporters in Ky

Tea Party candidate Al Reynolds says minorities prefer drug dealing over college

With 6 days away from the election more and more racism and outrageous behavior is being blatantly displayed. Let’s start with this doozie. Here we have Tea Party candidate Al Reynolds who is running in the 52nd district in Illinois who during a candidate’s forum said minority men preferred drug dealing vs going to college.

“I’ve been in the city and the dichotomy of the women and the men in the minorities, there is a difference in the fact that most minority women, either the single parent or coming from a poor neighborhood, are motivated more so than the minority men,” Reynolds said, when asked what he would do to increase diversity at state colleges. “And it’s a pretty good reason. Most of the women who are single parents have to find work to support their family. The minority men find it more lucrative to be able to do drugs or other avenues rather than do education. It’s easier….We need to provide ways that are more incentive, other than just sports avenues, for the men for the minorities to want to go to college and get an education and better themselves before the women have to support them all.”

We’re not sure if he saw a BET comedy show or if watched one too many rap videos. Perhaps he overheard the rhetoric of one of those self hating token Black and Brown folks who are a part of the Tea Party. In any case, it’s an erroneous statement and quite offensive. It’s also indicative of the Tea Party and their supporters.

The big irony here is the other day after I put out my article about the parallel’s between the rise of the Tea Party and the rise of the Klan at the turn of the century when the movie ‘Birth of a Nation‘ was released, these Tea Party folks went and found a some Black guy to write a blog calling me a bonehead for speaking on their racism. My guess is he’ll defend these remarks. Thats how such folks usually do..

The other incident that has everyone talking involves Tim Profit a volunteer co-ordinator Kentucky Senator Tea Party candidate Rand Paul and a 23-year-old woman named Lauren Valle who is a member of MoveOn.org. A video shows Valle being stomped by a group of men who support Rand. Included in that footage is Profit actually stomping on her head.

Valle explained that she was in Kentucky to bring attention to Paul being a puppet of corporate interests and she has been using street theater as a way to get her message across. The night of the debate, when Valle got beat up, she was wearing a sign and wanted to satirically give Paul and ’employee of the month award’.

Paul supporters who knew who she was had surrounded her claiming they were doing ‘crowd control’ and might have to ‘take some one out’.

Valle describes what was shown in the footage;

When Rand Paul’s car arrived a couple of them stepped in front of me so I stepped off the curb to get around them to get back out front. At that point they started grabbing for me and I ran all the way around the car with them in pursuit. The footage is after I’ve run all the way around the car and I’m in front of the car and that is when they took me down. One or two people twisted my arms behind my back and took me down… It was about two-to-three seconds after that another person stomped on my head. And I lay there for 20 seconds or so and my partner Alex came and got me up and that’s the point where there is the media clip of me speaking.

So what we have at the end of the day is Tea Party members stating unabashedly that Black men prefer drug dealing over education and a young 23 year old woman who wearing a sign getting stomped by a group of men. This is the same Tea Party folks who were running around just a year ago disrupting Healthcare Debate Townhalls. Have people forgotten that?  Sadly the Tea Party is reminding the world that violence is a way of life for them. In the words of former SNCC member H. Rap Brown ‘Violence is as American as Apple pie’.  If you think that assertion is far-fetched we remind you of this infamous confrontation involving the Tea Party misfits confronting a man with Parkinson’s disease.

Chicago Rapper Rhymefest puts his Hat in the Arena-He’s Running for Alderman

Can a Grammy award-winning artist who co-wrote the hit song ‘Jesus Walks’ for Kanye West have success in the political arena of one of the roughest cities to run for office? This is what Che Smith better known as Rhymefest will find out during the 2011 election cycle.

Today (Thursday Sept 21 2010) Rhymefest will hold a press conference in Chicago to officially announce his bid for Alderman in the 20th ward which includes parts of Chicago’s Southside, Englewood and Woodlawn. The area has a number of nagging problems ranging from crumbling schools to violence.  He  noted its one of the most violent neighborhoods in the city and is in need of serious healing, solutions,  fresh perspectives and new leadership that is on the same page as  the residents.

During our Breakdown FM interview Rhymefest noted that Chicago has long been a political town where things are rough and tumble and very  much in your face.  Say what you will about New York, the reality about ‘The Chi’ is if you make it there politically speaking, you make it anywhere.

He continued by noting  Chicago is a city that historically has prided itself on having strong organization. The way the city has long operated was not by who you are?, but instead who are you down with? and what do you all do?

He said one of the challenges that has faced folks residing in the 20th ward and in many places throughout society is that there is now a lot of disorganized leaders, ministers and politicians which has resulted in disorganized communities. Rhymefest wants to change that. He noted that over the past few years there have been some high-profile incidents of corruption which has contributed to the disenchantment that many have with  ‘disorganized’ leadership. He said some of the long time leaders who have lost their way in doing so have created opportunities for new blood and new approaches to enter into the arena and be more accountable.

Rhymefest wants to bring about increased cooperation and open up the democratic process as Alderman

Fest noted that his bid should not be seen as someone  trying to get into office on name recognition or celebrity status. He explained in great detail during our recent interview the types of steps he intends to take to move his community forward. He has a concept called AIM.. which stands for address, implement and maximize. He said with each problem confronting the community he and his team plan to Address them.. Implement solution s and Maximize resources.

Rhymefest believes that many of the solutions facing the 20th Ward lie within the residents.  What needs to happen is opportunities for them to be part of the governing process should be made available and people should have a richer sense of ownership and better opportunities to weigh in on key issues.

In our interview Rhymefest lays out the plans he has to make this happen. He wants the community to be run like a Co-op.  On key issues that involve spending and allocation of resources, he wants the community to be able to vote on it versus having someone go in and get caught up cuddling with special interests and outside forces.  His job as alderman is to facilitate and implement the solutions the community puts forth.

Come 2011 the Windy City will garner the national spotlight not only because Rhymefest is in the race, but also  former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel is vying for Mayor’s seat now vacated by long time incumbent Richard Daley who recently stepped down…This should be a contest full of fireworks because Rahm is a take s no prisoners type of guy who recently held a fundraiser in Hollywood and will no doubt use his influence to have lot of big name people come into Chicago to stomp for him.

Rhymefest’s announcement has caused quite a stir with many within the music industry wanting to come out and stomp for him. The line up and camaraderie he has amongst Chicago’s Hip Hop community is formidable.  From Lupe Fiasco to Kanye West and beyond, iIf Che is able to inspire his folks politically the way he does with his music the Windy City is gonna be on fiya.

The Rent is Too Damn High Party Resonates w/ Audience During NY Gov Debate

It’s gonna be hard to watch a gubernatorial debate and not have some one on the panel as outspoken and as colorful as Jimmy McMillan from the ‘Rent is Too Damn High Party‘

As I was watching this debate the other night for governor of New York at Hofstra University, I was glad to see that they opened up the event to all 7 candidates. This needs to be done more and we as a voting public we need to demand this..It would’ve been a oh hum affair just to see Andrew Cuomo and Carl Paladino. Well lemme take that back.. Paladino and his outbursts of ignorance can be entertaining until you realize folks are actually voting for him. But normally speaking, too many debates are corporate driven exercises where everything is scripted down to the questions. Very rarely do we have fireworks and real conversation. The excuse given by debate organizers is that there are too many characters who don’t deserve to be on the stage with the ‘real’ candidates.

When you stop to think about the so-called front running ‘real candidates’ who belong to the Republican and Democrat party are often characters. They play the role of being elusive, overly cautious and staying on message. The viewing public is left trying to figure out what’s truth and what’s spin. There’s never anyone else on the stage who can raise other perspectives and challenge scripted assertions. This needs to change.

Former Black Panther & NY City Councilman Charles Barron is running for Governor under the newly formed Freedom Party

What was good about the NY gubernatorial debate we got to see everyone. We got to see Brooklyn City Council member Charles Barron who was repping for the new Freedom Party. many didn’t know he stepped out and has tried to get traction for a much-needed third-party that doesn’t have to compromise. In short he gave folks something to vote for.

As noted earlier we also got to see Jimmy McMillan from the ‘Rent is Too High Party‘. He was the breakout star who was funny and provided comic relief of sorts but was at the same time, so right on point with his issue. In the age of Youtube we get to see how a debate should unfold and how a candidate should have passion for an issue.

It was also interesting to note how the NY gubernatorial debate was covered nationally. However in many places outside of NY the focus was only on Cuomo and Paladino.  This goes to show how a script is already written and being followed by Mainstream media.

I think people should check out the Freedom Party. Here’s a good interview with Charles Barron..After Barron answers the first question there’s about 45 seconds of down time as camera person reposition themselves to get a one on one interview I wish someone had recorded and posted up Barron’s remarks from the debate. I couldn’t find anything on Youtube.

Folks who were at the debate noted that not only was McMillan funny but watching Cuomo and Paladino got hemmed up was funny. They weren’t able to hide behind handlers or pre-approaved questions..My boy SlabTzu DelFuego noted: ‘People who saw the whole debate laughed allot, not just because of McMillain. They laughed every single time Quomo and Paladino got rocked.

“Trusting Quomo and Paladino to take out corruption, is like asking an arsonist to take out a fire” was a highlighted quote he attributed to Charles Barron

NFL Pro-Bowler Junior Seau Arrested for Domestic Violence Crashes SUV off Cliff

Sadly this is becoming all too familiar, the arrest of an athlete or some other celebrity for domestic violence. Many were shocked to hear that former NFL 12 time Pro Bowler Junior Seau was the latest to go down this lane. Over the past year we’ve had everyone from Shannon Sharpe and Warren Sapp to Ben Roethlisberger get in hot water over alleged domestic violence and assault. Makes you wonder whats going on in the NFL.

According to police report Seau was arrested earlier this morning near his home in San Diego County. His 25-year-old girl friend called police the night before when the incident took place. Seau wasn’t present when police came to his crib. He wound up talking to the police and turned himself in this morning. His girlfriend suffered minor injuries.

Many found this shocking since Seau has a foundation that raises money for child abuse among other things. He’s long been seen as a pillar of the his community.

Complicating Seau’s arrest was him crashing off a cliff after being released. This took place near Carlsbad, California a few hours after he was released from jail. Folks aren’t sure if this was an accident or something related to his plight.. He is in the hospital recovering.

A Conversation w/ Dr Cornel West: Immigration Reform, Black & Brown Unity, President Obama & the Midterm Elections & Bishop Eddie Long

A Conversation w/ Cornel West pt1

It’s always enlightening to catch up with Princeton Professor and author Dr Cornel West . Many of us know him for his books ‘Race Matters‘, ‘Democracy Matters’ and ‘Keeping Faith: Philosophy and Race in America’ to name a few. He always has some keen insight to loan and he’s good at breaking down complex issue for us to understand. He also comes from a place of love and compassion. He truly wants to see us do better.

We caught up with him the other day and spoke to him about his recent projects. Currently him and long time friend and fellow author/ activist Tavis Smiley are doing a radio show they just launched called Smiley and West.He also finished up his autobiography. He’s also doing some work on an academic book about  Jay-Z

During our interview Dr West spoke to him about his recent trip to Arizona. There he met with leaders in the Chicano & Mexicano community who have been on the front lines fighting the Draconian Law racial profiling, anti-immigrant law SB 1070.

During our convo we spoke about the oppression facing Black & Brown communities and how some have tried to hijack the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement. He noted that some have erroneously asserted the Civil Rights movement was only for Black people when in fact it was a movement for justice that included all oppressed people.

A Conversation w/ Cornel West pt2

We continue our interview w/ Professor Cornel West who goes in on President Obama and his lack of policies toward poor people… Cornel talks about the public spat they had where Obama stepped to him and let him know he didn’t like what he said about him in a Playboy magazine interview..

According to Cornel, Obama was upset that he was being criticized for not being progressive. West felt Obama was out-of-order and wish the two could sit down and discuss the matter behind closed doors.

Cornel talks about the state of poverty in this country and why he’s been critical of Obama who he feels has been too cozy with corporate interests. He says he will not silence himself for Obama and that too many leaders bow down after getting a phone call from the White House.

Cornel also talks about the legacy of Dr Martin Luther King and challenges president Obama to be more King-like with his policies

We ask Cornel if folks should vote in the mid-term elections and whether or not Democrats have been too passive. He gives some keen insight as to how we should see the election and deal with groups like the Tea Party

We continue our interview w/ Professor Cornel West.. Here Cornel goes in on the Black church and how its been severely compromised. He also talks about the controversy surrounding Bishop Eddie Long.. Here he explains the difference between Prophetic and liberation theologies and the current wave of Prosperity Gospel teachings. He talks to us about what we as Christians and members of a Black Church should ideally be doing during these times.

Professor West  also talks about the new album he’s been working on with funk legend Bootsy Collins.. He says he’s taking it to the next level..

Could You Imagine if Barack Obama Practice Witchcraft Like Tea Party Candidate Christine O’Donnell

Could you imagine if President Obama was found to have gone to some outing where he toyed around with the practices and rituals with a religion like Santa Muerta, Santeria or any number of Native American spiritual traditions? Folks would’ve had a field day..

It’s bad enough that Tea party types have focused in on his Kenyan background and have resurrected every stereotype in the book. It’s bad enough that we’ve seen numerous placards of President Obama dressed as a witch doctor (which he wasn’t) and because the stereotypes are so ingrained there’s no way to even look at the true history of the practice and glean better understanding. Such is this place called America where the slightest of things can be made into total condemnation of ones character.

While all these attacks are taking place, we have Christine O’Donnell the ultra religious Tea Party candidate who is now holding it down for the GOP in the fall contest for US Senate out of Delaware. A tape was put out via comedian HBO talk show host Bill Maher with her talking about how she was at some Satanic cult practicing witch craft. She din’t use the word Wicca she said Satanic and witchcraft.

Now she’s catching hell, but no one has showed up with nasty ‘witch doctor’ signs and I wonder why? We don’t have thousands of people outside O’Donnell’s front door with signs demanding that she go away the way we had thousands running around telling us to get rid of Islam.. And while I definitely disagree with the protest and outraged launched at our Muslim fellow American citizens, what was not lost on me was those who protested equated Islam with Evil aka Satan.. Here you have a candidate who said she was at an altar where they worshipped Satan…How much more evil can you get?

If they could stab Muslim cab drivers and urinate in Mosques and have sitting congressman and stand alongside angry mobs demanding a Mosque not be built in lower Manhattan, I fully expect them to demand that O’Donnell not run..If not than I think we should shine a light on the hypocrisy of the Tea Party zealots and their supporters.

Immortal Technique: ‘Slavery Was Once the Law-Would You have Supported that Back in the Days?’ Our Rock the Bells Interview

During Rock the Bells in Mountainview we caught up with one of Hip Hop’s most profound and politically astute artists Immortal Technique. He swung through 10 deep with his famed Rebel Army and did not disappoint as they lit up the Paid Dues stage.

Later that night we talked to Immortal about some of the key issues of the day starting with his thoughts on Park 51, which is the Muslim Community center being protested by anti-Islamic mobs in New York City near Ground Zero.  We wanted Immortal’s thought on this because he had caused a bit of a stir a few years ago when he released the song Bin Laden where Mos Def and Jadakiss were  on the hook asserting that George Bush knocked down the Twin Towers. Later he did a remix where Chuck D and KRS were on the hook. He explained that it was hypocritical to demand that a group of people who did not fly planes into those buildings be asked to back down.. He said it was more than obvious the 9-11 hijackers did not represent Islam just like Christianity wasn’t represented when Timothy McVeigh blew up the Oklahoma Fed Building or when large groups of people were massacred during the Crusades.

The other big issue we broached was immigration and the debate around Arizona’s SB 1070.  He said ‘illegal immigration’ is more than just a legal issue. He said it’s a human rights issue in which people are seeking out better lives for themselves. Our foreign policies have unduly impacted many  of the places that people are fleeing. We’ve made no moves to correct that.  Immortal noted that many supporters of SB 1070 want the economic advantages that come from ‘undocumented labor’. They’re not making moves to remove themselves from that equation.

Immortal also pointed out that there’s a lot of hypocrisy in those who say they support laws like SB1070. He noted that many say that we must follow the law. “Well slavery was once the law”. Immortal pointed out;  “Would those same people have defended the institution of slavery if they was around back in those days”?

We concluded our interview by talking to Immortal about the orphanage he opened in Afghanistan and his recent trip to Haiti.  He said the idea of opening up an orphanage came during his participation at last year’s Rock the Bells where he met organizers who inspired him. He went out to Afghanistan for several weeks and avoided being embedded with the US military and instead was taken in by long time residents who took him all over the country. he said the trip was life altering.

He noted that his stay Haiti was much shorter and not as impactful compared to Afghanistan. He was disheartened by the extreme poverty and noted that there’s no excuse for this when Haiti is in our backyard.

KRS-One: ‘Obama is a Politician He’s not your homeboy, He’s not your man’-Our Rock the Bells Interview

It’s always fun catching up with Hip Hop legend Blastmaster KRS-One. He always has something colorful and insightful to say when speaking. Some you may agree with, some you may disagree with. No matter what you have to appreciate his passion and confidence..

When we caught up with KRS during the Rock the Bells 2010 in Mountainview he was on his way to the stage to perform the album ‘Criminal Minded’. He did not disappoint. In 10 minutes we touched on a number of topics including his thoughts behind his new book ‘The Gospel of Hip Hop’. KRS noted that this was the Gospel for the new millenium. He says every generation has their Gospel and that he wanted to put forth his vision of Hip Hop and remind the world about its divine aspects. He believes the culture touches on the spirit in ways we simply cannot ignore.

I asked KRS with all the wisdom he’s garnered over the years, what aspects of Criminal Minded would he change?

KRS said, he regrets how people mistook the meaning behind the album cover which shows him and the late Scott La Rock wearing an ammunition belt, holding pistols and having a grenade on the table. He said many thought he and Scott were the jump off for what would eventually be called ‘gangsta rap’ when in fact, they were attempting to put forth a ‘revolutionary’ pose.

KRS explained, that no gangsta would walk around wearing ammunition and holding grenades. He talked about how BDP was influenced by the Black Panthers and Black Liberation Army and wanted that album cover to be symbolic of the stances they took.

KRS also talked about how he regrets the harsh, sexist  words directed at Roxanne Shante. He noted that he was young and wild back in those days  and in hindsight  cringes at some of the things he uttered. He said its something all rappers will go through as they get older. How we express ourselves without full knowledge and understanding can be embarrassing once it’s obtained.

We concluded our interview by talking about President Obama. A couple of months after Obama’s inauguration , KRS came to Oakland and did a wicked freestyle where he talked about the biggest problem the president would have is the power and control of the Fed Bank. Over 100 thousand people viewed that video which sparked a lot of discussion. KRS caught al;ot of heat and was depicted as a hater. Nowadays his insight isn’t so easily dismissed or challenged

We talked about those earlier remarks and pressed KRS as to where he stands now. He stated that he respects the President, but make no mistake, Obama is a politician who runs a government.

“He’s a politician..he’s not your boy. he’s not your man”, KRS said.

He went to add, that we are now in a globalized world with a globalized economy and America has been resisting its entrance into it. KRS said, gone are the days when people could easily identify themselves as a race or religion. Things are changingas we are now in what people will deem a ‘New World Order’
