Is the Case to Remove Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi a Political Witch-Hunt? It Sure Seems Like It

The domestic violence case involving newly elected SF Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi and the all out efforts to remove him from office is an interesting one that raises a bunch of questions on a number of levels. Is this a political witch hunt or a concerned group of politicians showing zero tolerance for domestic violence and unethical behavior by the sheriff, law enforcement and public officials in general?

Such questions are asked from the standpoint of watching the  Ethics Commission meet today to determine what procedures will be followed during Mirkarimi’s upcoming hearing and seeing how SF Mayor Ed Lee over the past couple of months has gone all out leaving no stone unturned in his dogged determination to remove Mirkarimi from office.

We’ve heard Mayor Lee say things like; He has ‘concern for public safety‘ and he wants to ‘restore the public trust‘.. Ok,we can all get that.. very few would disagree.

So one has to wonder why such determination isn’t shown when the police do things like brutalize and shoot its citizens in highly egregious and questionable circumstances?

We didn’t see Mayor Ed Lee go all out when Kenneth Harding was shot and left to die over a $2 bus transfer last summer?  Hundreds of people came out to confront the police over that shooting. Scores of witnesses said it was unjust  yet,  we didn’t see the Mayor try to restore public trust in that situation..For that matter there have been scores of demonstrations in SF around the issue of police misconduct, many of them much larger and more widespread than anything around Mirkarimi, yet we have never seen this type of fervor to correct wrong doings and restore public trust

It was just two years ago we saw how SFPD was rocked by one of the largest scandals in the department’s history. Here we saw over 50 felony cases get overturned thanks to unethical behavior by cops who falsified reports and may have planted evidence on folks., yet we didn’t see all the stops pulled out around that.. We didn’t see procedures to remove the chief or any other supervising officer for allowing that to go down on their watch..One has to wonder why..

Mayor Ed Lee

Even if there are rules in place that hand tied  Mayor Lee, one still might ask why didn’t we see him simply  express anger and disdain the way he’s done around the Mikarimi situation?

Is this a case of politics? We know that Makarimi a former SF Supervisor and co-founder of SF Green Party,  has long been one of the more progressive voices in SF politics. He’s well-known and well liked. When he was running for sheriff he talked about how he would be one help out homeowners and not the banks when it came to foreclosures. If anyone could start the process of changing the inner workings of law enforcement and moving it in a decidedly more progressive direction, it would be Ross Makarimi.

Needless to say his run for Sheriff attracted a lot of attention and gave folks hope. It may have also garnered him some political enemies who seized upon any opportunity to bring him down..

Now don’t get me wrong, there’s no excuse for domestic violence. It should not be tolerated on any level  and if there’s procedure to go through Mirkarimi, no matter how progressive and likeable should go through it and accept his fate.. But given that this procedure being pursued by the Mayor is applicable to all types of ‘unethical behavior’ among public servants, why start and stop with Ross and no one else? Where’s the political muster to after other public servants and their transgressions?

Moving this scenario above and beyond San Francisco, one has to wonder why we don’t see the political brass of a city like Oakland going all out to remove police chiefs and officers when we have cops blatantly lying as they did recently when they shot and killed unarmed Alan Blueford and then claimed he shot them injuring an officer.. Evidence surfaces showing the officer shot himself, yet we see no procedure to remove him or the police chief who publicly covered for him.. Why is that? Is shooting, killing and lying about it not a threat to public safety? Is it not unethical behavior by a public servant?

People have fought long and hard to hold public officials in particular police officers accountable. We need to keep our eyes on this case around Ross Mirkarimi. from the looks of it this seems to be political payback where folks are pretending to be concerned about unethical behavior and domestic violence.. If Mayor Lee’s zeal for protecting the public is disingenuous and we see little or no movements in other areas then he will have done 3x as much damage to the public trust than Ross Mirkarimi ever did.

Memorial Day Holiday Mix: the Military & The Monetary-We Gotta Have Peace!

Hard Knock Radio 94.1 FM: In honor of Memorial Day we dropped a nice Memorial Day Mix that features everyone from Paris to Digital Underground to Goapele to Gil Scott-Heron to Michael Franti to Dilated Peoples and Saul Williams just to name a few.. Click the link below to listen..

As you listen, keep in mind the importance of us taking all the steps we can on a diplomatic bases to find solutions to conflict.. We must find ways to stop the Military Industrial Conflict where we have scores of multi- national corporations that profit insanely off of war and potential conflict…

On another note.. as we reflect on Memorial day, Folks may wanna reflect on its ‘lost origins’..Here’s an excerpt from Yale History professor David W. Blight ..You can peep the entire article at http://www.davidwblight.com/memorial.htm

Thousands of black Charlestonians, most former slaves, remained in the city and conducted a series of commemorations to declare their sense of the meaning of the war. The largest of these events, and unknown until some extraordinary luck in my recent research, took place on May 1, 1865. During the final year of the war, the Confederates had converted the planters’ horse track, the Washington Race Course and Jockey Club, into an outdoor prison. Union soldiers were kept in horrible conditions in the interior of the track; at least 257 died of exposure and disease and were hastily buried in a mass grave behind the grandstand. Some twenty-eight black workmen went to the site, re-buried the Union dead properly, and built a high fence around the cemetery. They whitewashed the fence and built an archway over an entrance on which they inscribed the words, “Martyrs of the Race Course.”

Then, black Charlestonians in cooperation with white missionaries and teachers, staged an unforgettable parade of 10,000 people on the slaveholders’ race course. The symbolic power of the low-country planter aristocracy’s horse track (where they had displayed their wealth, leisure, and influence) was not lost on the freedpeople. A New York Tribune correspondent witnessed the event, describing “a procession of friends and mourners as South Carolina and the United States never saw before.”

California Assembly Passes Bill to Honor the Father of Crack w/ a Statue inside State Capitol

What the heck is wrong with our lawmakers in Sacramento? This past Friday the State Assembly unanimously approved a bill that would allow a statue of the Father of Crack Cocaine to be places inside the Capitol.

The men behind this move is Assemblyman Curt Hagman of Chino Hills and Martin Garrick of Solana Beach. They authored the AB2358 which passed 55-0. Obviously our lawmakers see nothing wrong with sending a bad example to our kids..How do we go about honoring the Father of Crack? Can we get a statue of Black Panther leader Huey P Newton or United farm worker leader Cesar Chavez inside the Capitol? Perhaps we can show some love to Angela Davis or Dolores Huerta?

With each passing year, we have delusional forces within our population who wish to rewrite history and make us forget about a man they call the ‘Great Communicator or the Gipper.. He’s the California actor-turned President turned Crack Cocaine Lord-Ronald Wilson Reagan..

They can honor Reagan with a statue if they want. Many of us will remember his destructive anti-heroic role. Thank God for Atlanta rapper Killer Mike who did this song reminding us about all the harm and dread Ronald Reagan brought to this country.. Here’s an article laying out all his evil deeds.. From supporting Apartheid to turning hsi back on the Aids Epidemic.. Read that article HERE

On last tidbit… The statue of a Civil War abolitionist named Thomas Starr King was removed back in 2006 to make room for Reagan.. How’s that for a nasty insidious twist? Get rid of a guy who fought against slavery to honor a man who turned his back on anti Apartheid efforts..Remember how Reagan stood against Nelson Mandela and the ANC?

This Memorial Day Honor the Troops by bringing them Home: Our Intv w/ Iraq War Vet Matt Howard

Hard Knock Radio 94.1 FM: This Memorial Day we can best honor our troops by working our butts off to make sure they are returned home.. We should work to get our soldiers out of Afghanistan, out of Iraq and out of various countries in Africa..ala Africom… We should also be making sure our soldiers are nowhere near Iran…

In honor of Memorial Day we dropped a nice Memorial Day Mix that features everyone from Paris to Digital Underground to Goapele to Gil Scott-Heron just to name a few.. Click the link below to listen…

We can spend trillions of dollars on making weapons and coming up w/ advanced military strategies, but we can’t seem to put all those resources and bright minds to work toward finding peaceful and diplomatic solutions..

We currently have in our military divisions that work on psychological profiling and manipulation.. it’s a Psy Ops division that recently deployed its methods on US senators including Al Franken to extend the war in Afghanistan.. You can read about that HERE . If we can do that why not use those methods to have lasting peace?

A few days ago we sat down with Iraqi Vet (Iraq Veterans Against the War) Matt Howard who along with hundreds of his fellow soldiers showed in Chicago at the NATO Summit and gave back their medals. He saw the futility of War and how the Military Industrial Complex is working overtime to tank the economy and keep the world upended. And when I say tank the economy, that’s no exaggeration.. Today the military is a major economic windfall for all these private companies who make billions of everything from providing meals where they charge $30 a plate, per meal person to charging $50 per load of laundry..

This is our tax dollars going into the coffers of companies like Halliburton, Boeing and Bechtel.. Not much of that money comes back to our community in reinvestment or even jobs above the few they hire as contractors.  Here’s our insightful interview w/ Matt Howard

Below is a classic cut from the late Gil Scott heron that sums it all up..The Military and the Monetary

From Hardcore Journalist to Dope Emcee-Our Intv w/ SF’s Finest-Rocky Rivera

A while back we sat down and chopped it up with one of the Bay Area’s finest emcees.. We’re talking about Ms Rocky Rivera..For a long time she was known around the town as a skilled journalist and activist who hailed from SF State…She got so good at her craft that she wound being featured in an MTV Reality series called I’m From Rolling Stone‘ .  Here, she won a position as a contributing editor. She is also one of the few if not only journalist to interview all members of the Wu-Tang Clan at the same time.. Her keen knowledge of Hip Hop and her ability to flip the script lead to her winning.

This is important to note, because Rocky decided that she wanted to do more than write, hence she picked up a mic and brought that same scrappy attitude along with her.. The end result has been critical acclaim. In this interview  we cover everything from Rocky’s transition from journalist to emcee, what went into making her latest album, Pop Killer Mixtape, Her outlook on Bay Area Hip Hop  and a whole lot more.. Pete Rock Issues Statement About Lupe Interview… (Here’s Some Food for Thought)

New York, NY – – In an effort to add clarity and insight into a recent controversy that has been stirring this week, legendary Hip Hop producer Pete Rock speaks about the matter of Lupe Fiasco‘s take on his classic song from 1992, T.R.O.Y. / They Reminisce Over You. Pete Rock offers these statements to set the record straight:

It’s true that Lupe Fiasco’s representative from Atlantic Records contacted me last fall and he did so while I was in mourning over the sudden death of my cousin Heavy D. I gave the representative a conditional “yes” to use T.R.O.Y. for Lupe’s album but only based on the condition that I be involved on the project. It’s what I always say when approached by people who want to use that particular song. I was never contacted again. At no point was there any follow up from Atlantic Records. Now, the story gets twisted and it’s being said that I said “yes.” The part about my conditions has been left out to make me seem like I’m a hypocrite. When I heard about the song again, it was done, completed, and playing on the radio…and that was Monday night.

It’s true that people have made T.R.O.Y. over. I can’t control what’s done with my work after it’s already out there but I can control who gets my blessings. Those who involve me and respect me in the process, get my blessings. Those who work behind my back – but all the while putting up a front like I’m down with it – don’t.

I’m flattered that they wanted to remake my song and that they respect it for the classic that it is. I just think they should have talked to Atlantic Records to make sure things were done right. The biggest violation is from Atlantic Records but what can you expect? Labels are corporations and their whole point is to sell records. If they respect the artist in the process that would be nice, but they’re not required. For as political as Lupe as, I expected him to know that and to have hopefully made them more accountable. I’m surprised that he’s siding with the corporation on this.

Technically, there was no crime committed with the release of Lupe’s version of my song. Technically, the song can be out there but I’m not talking about legalities. I’m asking: Where’s the respect for the code among artists?

No ego, but I know my place in this game. I’m recognized as a legend and I accept that. But most of all, I’m a grown man. The love and admiration that people have for me as a producer and as a man of honor has been non-stop, consistent for over 20 years. That’s based on something that can’t be touched. My music and my character stands for itself. T.R.O.Y was a career-defining song has gotten me invited to the White House. It’s not just because people think the production is dope. It’s also because of what the song stands for. I want my music to touch people but I don’t want to be walked over or lied on in the process.

I admit that my outburst on Monday night on Twitter was based on my reminiscing about Heav and Troy. I think about them every day. I apologize for being emotional about this. I had no intentions of hurting Lupe’s career. That’s not me. I’m known for building up not breaking down careers. Moving forward, I’m 100% in control and focused on what’s good.

When asked why he felt it important speak out again, Pete Rock went on to say: I’ve been around this game long enough to know controversies come and they go and a lot of times the facts of the situation get blotted out. This situation is hot enough for me to set the record straight. Like I said before, I’m moving on.”

-Pete Rock-

Davey D’s Food for Thought:

This is an industry where from time to time folks will have some serious disagreements..We’re talking about works of art and when it comes down to it folks are extremely passionate about their craft..I can easily see the passion that Pete has about TROY and I can see why Lupe would be so upset with criticism that Pete launched on twitter.

All this gets complicated by folks access to social media and the growing fickleness of fans.. We now live in a world where artists whether they like it or not are brands. Their names and work are businesses connected to many others who are behind the scenes and not on the mic or on the stage..Sadly we are at a point where a misplaced word or public critic can seriously impact one’s career or business. This is by no means unique to Hip Hop.. Talk to a business who got a bad review on a site like Yelp.

I hope that Pete and Lupe can retire their disagreement and talk behind the scenes. While public disputes & beefs  are good fodder for all of us who write or broadcast, it adds to an increasingly destructive climate that all of us should take heed to..This is not to say that Pete or Lupe would do each other harm, but its all of us who weigh in and offer harsh opinions and barbs..

For example, it was sad to see some of the vitriol directed at Lupe when Pete tweeted out his criticisms. I personally wish he had called him vs tweeting.. I felt it was unfair for Lupe to be on the receiving end of folks reacting to Pete to suddenly start dissing Lupe, especially when Lupe is really trying to put some social commentary and food for thought into his music…

Yesterday when Lupe expressed his anger and disappointment on Sway’s Morning show it was sad to see folks react with harsh negativity toward Pete..For many of us, Pete’s a legend, who’s earned his stripes and it’s never good to see our heroes and sheroes torn down. We have enough folks outside our community who do this day in and day out…It’s this type of weighing that leads to unnecessary drama.

I hope all of us take this incident as an opportunity to grow and learn from.. All of us should be reaching out to Pete and Lupe and insisting they resolve their situation behind close doors. And if its gonna play out in public hopefully they conduct themselves in away that sets a tone for all of us to follow.. A lot of eyes are watching both men..

For those of us in the industry, journalist and bloggers included we should be working overtime to bring this in a forward productive direction.. Peace is an investment all of us can benefit from..And if we’re gonna weigh in and highlight beefs, there have been close to 30 police killings of Black people since Trayvon Martin.. That’s some beef to sink into..

They just arrested a brother in Oakland the other day named Chris Moreland and charged him with 3 Felonies for stepping to a lying police chief over the killing of an unarmed youth.. That’s beef..

Last week they had drones flying over Chicago as people protested NATO and their policies to advance war.. That’s beef..

New York City police are on pace to Stop and Frisk over 800 thousand people this years.. That’s some beef to highlight..

Have any of us taken a look at Congressman Paul Ryan’s budget?  That’s beef..  Food for Thought..

Carl Dix: Connecting NYPD’s Stop and Frisk Policy w/ Trayvon Martin Case (HKR Intv)

It’s always a pleasure chopping it up w/ freedom fighter Carl Dix.. He’s dedicated to the struggle and willing to walk the walk of the things he talks. In recent months Dix along with scholar/activist Cornel West have pushed back hard on the NYPD and their infamous Stop and Frisk policy. They even put the policy on trial with plans to follow-up with similar measures in Brownsville, Brooklyn.

Last year over 680k people have been stopped and searched by police. Over 85% have been Black or Brown men with less than 5% convicted of carrying any weapon or committing crime. Dix noted that currently NYPD is on pace to stop and frisk over 800k. Dix noted the root cause of this disparity is racial profiling.

Currently Dix is down in Sanford, Florida on what is part of a BAsic Bus Tour through the South. Dix reaffirmed what M1 from dead prez had told us a few weeks back, that the spirit of resistance is alive and well and very strong in Sanford which is where the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman saga is unfolding.  This is a story often overlooked by the mainstream media..

During our conversation, Dix makes the connection between the Stop and Frisk policies in NY and the current climate of vigilantism that we saw play itself out in Sanford.. You can peep that interview below..

Oakland Police Chief Confronted & Shut Down at Justice 4 Alan Blueford Townhall

Alan Blueford murdered by Oakland Police

Since the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, there have been closed to 30 Black or Brown people shot and killed by law enforcement or in the case of Trayvon, wannabe law enforcement. Many of these shootings have been highly questionable, meaning the person killed was unarmed or there are strong conflicting statements from either the police or witnesses.

Here in Oakland, California, the shooting death Alan Dwayne Blueford is one such killing.  Oakland police have been very shady with the stories they put forth to the public. It seems like a deliberate attempt to muddy the waters, cast seeds of doubt and cover up their own mistakes.. Initially police said they were in a shoot out and Blueford shot the officer in the stomach.. Later the police said Blueford shot the officer in the leg..Next the police said that it was possible the officer was shot in the leg by another officer in a case of friendly fire..Finally it came out that the officer shot himself. He shot himself in the foot..

Many believe the officer shot himself after he killed Blueford and saw the young man was unarmed.. The police then double back and said a gun was recovered, the community has yet to see any evidence of finger prints , gun residue etc.. Many have concluded it was the officer planting a gun near the scene.. This would not be unsual in a city that in the past 10 years has had to shell out over 58 million dollars in wrongful death shootings and police brutality incidents. This would not be far-fetched in a city that was home to a rogue group of cops known as the Riders who were found to routinely plant drugs and guns on suspects. One of the Oakland Riders is a still a fugitive at large..

Adding to all this was the fact that Blueford was left to on the ground for 4 hours to die while the officer who lied and then finally admitted to shooting himself was treated. The public still does not know the name of the officer thanks to California’s Policeman’s Bill of Rights which prevents the public from knowing the name of officers involved in these and other brutality incidents.. Community investigators have revealed the officer who murdered Blueford is Miguel Masso a former military man who lives in Los Banos which is more than 100 miles outside of Oakland..

Blueford’s parents were not aware of their son’s death for more than 6 hours. They went down to the police station were treated like crap and not told for more than 2 hours. Their mistreatment led to the unusual move by Chief Howard Jordan to meet and apologize to the family.

In an attempt to do more damage control, OPD held a town hall meeting at Acts Full Gospel Church. Folks showed up only to discover the police chief would only answer questions that were pre-written. This annoyed folks to no end.. Then he seemed ill prepared or unable to answer basic questions.. He also hawked what many saw as blatant lies.. This led to more than half the room turning their backs on the chief and throwing up fist..

The chief cut the meeting short and left the building with angry residents in tow.. They got at him and let him know that there needs to be accountability and the community would not stand for his lies..The chief was definitely embarrassed.. Later that night we learned Oakland police came after one of the community members shown in the video holding a bullhorn..Chris M They claimed he assaulted an officer at the church… If that was the case when and where did that happen and why not arrest him on the spot?

Here’s a video of last night’s Townhall Meeting and dispersal..Please note I’m trying to re-render this so the quality is better… * quick note.. here’s the better quality video.. of last nights confrontation

Today is Notorious BIG’s Birthday..How do You Remember Him?

Today, May 21st is the birthday of the late Notorious BIG… Not sure if people take time out to remember, most of us tend to focus on slain rapper’s death day.. and that’s understandable..15 years after his murder we still don’t have a killer in custody.. There’s still a lot of controversy.. For this birthday instead of doing the usual where we look back at the controversies surrounding his death, lets remember what made Biggie so dope…

Has anyone been able to match his charisma and flow since he’s been gone..He’s is still the King of New York in the flesh or in spirit

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rKnMp9U-Lg

Wicked flows on the joint party and Bullshit.. I wish I had the video when him and Pac performed this at new Music Seminar..

I like this performance of Big Poppa…

of course there’s the infamous bottle tossing incident at KMEL Summer Jam.. Biggie and Cap showed up and didn’t do a sound check so they didn’t get a chance to get acclimated to the stage.. hence when Cap spun his records kept skipping.. Biggie tossed a water bottle at him… LOL

Immortal Technique Interview on Malcolm X’s birthday May 2006-Harlem

One thing you gotta love about Harlem based rapper Immortal Technique is he walks the walk and talks the talk… Most of us admire him for his political wisdom which manifest itself very forcefully in his songs. That’s a good thing.. many of today’s artist shy away from rocking the boat. Tech doesn’t.

More importantly, Tech speaks his truth no matter what. It doesn’t matter if cameras are on him or not. You can catch him participating in marches, rallies and simply building with the community.  A few years ago, I was in Harlem for what would’ve been Malcolm X‘s 80th birthday. Many had come out for march and right there in the middle of the crowd was Immortal Technique. No fan fare. No album to promote. It was just him being a part of the community.. As I said at a day and time when so many are looking for cheap promotion angles, Immortal Technique’s low-key participation was a breath of fresh hair..Below is our 4 part interview.. Given May 19 2006 in Harlem New York..
