Hugo Chavez Passing in 2013 is Overshadowed by Mandela’s Death

Hugo ChavezWith Nelson Mandela recently passing many overlooked the fact that earlier this year the world lost another great leader of African descent Hugo Chavez, president of Venezuela who noted that his ascent to president was inspired by Mandela. For many Chavez was considered a friend and a champion of the poor. He was seen as a hero who was willing to stand up to the United States and other western powers who have an egregious record in South America of undermining democratically elected leaders..

It’s important to understand that while Chavez was a charismatic singular face attached to Venezuela in terms of how he’s depicted here, in Latin America, he was part of a large movement. In short , he didn’t obtain his position in a vacuum. Nor can you explain Chavez or Venezuela in a 30 second sound bite..

Here’s our coverage of Chavez’s death as told by folks who knew him like former Congresswoman and Presidential candidate Cynthia Mckinney. We also got keen insightful reaction from Immortal Technique and Professor Sujatha Fernandes

The Election of Chokwe Lumumba as Mayor of Jackson, Mississippi

The Election of Chokwe Lumumba as Mayor of Jackson, Mississippi

Chokwe LumumbaIn 2013 we saw many pundits jump for joy as Bill De Blasio was elected Mayor of New York City.. We heard terms like ‘new era‘, ‘turn of the tide‘ and ‘political trail blazing‘ when describing a man who seemed to break all political conventions by highlighting his family which is racially mixed. He prominently featured his son who sported a large afro and told the world that his son and those who look like him would not have to worry about New York City’s infamous Stop and Frisk program..

There was lots of celebration when DeBlasio got elected only to have it damped when he announced that his first order of business would be to rehire Chief William Bratton to head up NYPD. Bratton was the architect and remains a strong proponent for Stop and Frisk..Folks were faced with the reality that it was Business and politics as usual

Meanwhile many of the folks celebrating then bemoaning De Blasio who were talking about the need for political change, ignored the historic election of Chokwe Lumumba, a long time human rights lawyer who in the past represented the late 2Pac Shakur and political prisoner, now exiled in Cuba, Asaata Shakur. Lumumba who is founder of the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement and a former VP of the Republic of New Afrika won with a stunning 87% of the vote..

He has promised to change the Jackson, Mississippi charter to a Human Rights charter and has plans to convene the 50th anniversary commemoration of the pivotal 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer when Civil Rights activists descended on Mississippi to help the historic voter registration battle being waged by Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer, Lawrence Guyot, and others involved in the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party..

Not only has Chokwe’s victory been ignored, but he is rarely invited to be a part of political roundtable discussions on important issues of the day the way we see other mayors and political figures..

Remembering Eazy E & Hip Hop’s Fight Agst HIV/AIDs on World AIDs Day

I may not seem like a guy you would pick to preach a sermon. But I feel it is now time to testify because I do have folks who care about me hearing all kinds of stuff about what’s up.”

“Yeah, I was a brother on the streets of Compton doing a lot of things most people look down on — but it did pay off. Then we started rapping about real stuff that shook up the LAPD and the FBI. But we got our message across big time, and everyone in America started paying attention to the boys in the ‘hood.”

“Soon our anger and hope got everyone riled up. There were great rewards for me personally, like fancy cars, gorgeous women and good living. Like real non-stop excitement. I’m not religious, but wrong or right, that’s me.”

“I’m not saying this because I’m looking for a soft cushion wherever I’m heading, I just feel that I’ve got thousands and thousands of young fans that have to learn about what’s real when it comes to AIDS. Like the others before me, I would like to turn my own problem into something good that will reach out to all my homeboys and their kin. Because I want to save their asses before it’s too late.”

“I’m not looking to blame anyone except myself. I have learned in the last week that this thing is real, and it doesn’t discriminate. It affects everyone. My girl Tomika and I have been together for four years and we recently got married. She’s good, she’s kind and a wonderful mother. We have a little boy who’s a year old. Before Tomika I had other women. I have seven children by six different mothers. Maybe success was too good to me. I love all my kids and always took care of them.”

“Now I’m in the biggest fight of my life, and it ain’t easy. But I want to say much love to those who have been down to me. And thanks for your support.”

Just remember: it’s YOUR real time and YOUR real life.

Eazy E

world aids dayMany of us have forgotten these haunting words from the late Eazy E who died from AIDs back in 1995. His death sent shock waves within the Hip Hop community and helped open people’s eyes. His death also helped shatter the myth of that HIV and AIDS was solely a gay white man’s disease.

Today is December 1 2013 and as we acknowledge World AIDs Day where the theme is Shared Responsibility: Strengthening Results for an AIDS-Free Generation, most of us are far more educated and understand that AIDs is a worldwide situation that has impacted all communities. Sadly in spite of the urgency, many of us have reverted back to what is deemed as irresponsible behavior. Many of us have looked at the success of people like basketball player Magic Johnson who was diagnosed with HIV and come to believe that this disease will not touch us…

Shortly after Eazy E’s death many people began to pay closer attention to a flurry of Hip Hop themed projects that had launched a year prior to his death. Most notable was the Stolen Moments; Red Hot +Cool which was an album and documentary that was hailed as Time Magazine’s 1994 Album of the Year. It was one of the first projects to explore the impact of AIDS upon the African American community. The CD features collaborations between old school jazz performers and contemporary hip hop artists. The documentary film focusing on the impact of AIDS on communities of color was broadcast on PBS in tandem with the album release, and released on home video.

http://vimeo.com/13117840

This incredible documentary  featured groups like ‘The Pharcyde‘ who performed their dope song ‘Rubbers‘.. Below is the original track. The other video is the live performance that aired in the documentary.

A year prior to Eazy’s death artist like Michael Franti did an incredible song and video called ‘Positive’ which caught our attention..I recall around World AID Day after Eazy E’s death, AIDs activists placed calls to urban radio stations all over the country to see if they could play the song. Sadly many didn’t, claiming it ‘didn’t fit the format’ (Does that sound like a familiar excuse?) . nevertheless the word got out thanks to the accompanying video.

After Eazy E’s death there was another far-reaching project called America is Dying Slowly (AIDS) It featured everyone from Wu-Tang Clan to Organized Konfusion to 8 Ball and MJG to the Goodie Mob. This was by far one of the best socially conscious albums to ever come out. many of the artists covered a variety of themes associated with AIDs thus forever smashing any myths and misconceptions. The subject matter ranged from unprotected sex, to tainted blood transfusions to the fast life of players and the consequences they might suffer. Many people got with the flavor of that album, even though many our urban stations ignored it even with such high profile groups.

Oakland artists the Conscious Daughters did an icredible song called ‘All Caught Up’ which took the HIV/ AIDs issue head on..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IWdGq6h4zU

Salt-N-Pepa did a song/PSA on their album ‘Very Necessary ‘

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5SvKZhVS0c

In recent years we’ve seen artists like Lil B step up and bring impactful messages with landmark songs like ‘I Got Aids‘. The song starts out with a telephone call from a guy stunned about the results his HIV results. He calls his girlfriend to share the news and to see if she knows anything about how or why he has it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ll79BnKktGY

Today as we acknowledge World AIDs Day its important to take along hard look at ourselves, our community and our culture. At a date and time where there are so many videos oozing with scantily clad women oozing with sex, we have to be cognizant of the type of message we convey to younger cats as well as ourselves. Many of us portray an air that suggests it’s ok for us to creep around and keep one, two or three females on the side while we have our ‘main honey at the crib. We mess around and slip up just once and boom-HIV and then AIDS.

The other sad secret we never want to talk about is what happens to so many us behind the walls inside prison. There’s some ill things like rapes taking place and when cats get out they inadvertently spread the disease not realizing they have been infected. Many of us act like there is no longer a risk in having sex. Many of us have been so into getting our groove on that we have all but forgotten Eazy E’s final words. At the time of his death he was the ultimate mack.. How soon we forget our history.

In any case its up to us brothas to do the right thing. lets keep ourselves informed.. Lets help with the fight to find a cure. Lets get tested and be honest with ourselves. Finally lets set an example for our seeds as well as ourselves and behave responsibly. The rapid spread of this disease in our community is inexcusable and well within our reach and preventing. Hopefully brothas will take this to heart and step up their game. and hold it down.. Keep HIV and AIDS at bay and don’t let Eazy E’s death be something that happen in vain..

Below are some crucial facts that we should all know about HIV and AIDs.. This comes from the site Beyond the Odds which is spearheaded by my Hard Knock Radio co-host Anita Johnson.

Facts About HIV and AIDs Every One Hip Hop Head Should Know

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is the virus that causes AIDS. This virus may be passed from one person to another when infected blood, semen, or vaginal secretions come in contact with an uninfected person’s broken skin or mucous membranes*. In addition, infected pregnant women can pass HIV to their baby during pregnancy or delivery, as well as through breast-feeding. People with HIV have what is called HIV infection. Some of these people will develop AIDS as a result of their HIV infection.

http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/resources/qa/qa1.htm

What is AIDS?

AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome:

Immune Deficiency means a weakness in the body’s system that fights diseases.

Syndrome means a group of health problems that make up a disease.

AIDS is caused by a virus called HIV, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. If you get infected with HIV, your body will try to fight the infection. It will make “antibodies,” – (chemicals that are part of the immune system that recognize invaders like bacteria and viruses and mobilize the body’s attempt to fight infection special molecules to fight HIV.

A blood test for HIV looks for these antibodies. If you have them in your blood, it means that you have HIV infection. People who have the HIV antibodies are called “HIV-Positive.”

Being HIV-positive, or having HIV disease, is not the same as having AIDS. Many people are HIV-positive but don’t get sick for many years. As HIV disease continues, it slowly wears down the immune system. Viruses, parasites, fungi and bacteria that usually don’t cause any problems can make you very sick if your immune system is damaged. These are called “opportunistic infections.”

http://www.aids.org/factSheets/101-what-is-aids.html

How is HIV transmitted?

HIV transmission can occur when blood, semen, pre-seminal fluid, vaginal fluid or breastmilk from an HIV-positive person enters the body of an HIV-negative person. HIV can enter the body through a vein, the lining of the anus or rectum, the lining of the vagina and/or cervix, the opening to the penis, the mouth, other mucous membranes — such as the eyes or inside of the nose — or cuts and sores. Intact, healthy skin is an excellent barrier against HIV and other viruses and bacteria.

Worldwide, the most common way that HIV is transmitted is through sexual transmission, including anal, vaginal or oral sex with an HIV-positive person. HIV also can be transmitted by sharing needles or injection equipment with an injection drug user who is HIV-positive, or from an HIV-positive woman to her infant before or during birth or through breastfeeding after birth. HIV also can be transmitted through receipt of infected blood or blood clotting factors.

Does having HIV mean you’ll die?

Testing positive for HIV means that you now carry the virus that causes AIDS. It does not mean that you have AIDS, nor does it mean that you will die. Although there is no cure for AIDS, many opportunistic infections that make people sick can be controlled, prevented or eliminated. This has substantially increased the longevity and quality of life for people living with AIDS. Bottom line, HIV/AIDS is not the same death sentence it was say 25 years ago. People are living long healthy lives with HIV and AIDS. The sooner you start to become aware and the more you know about the “virus” the better your chances are delaying the effects of the disease.

http://www.aids.org/info/aids-hiv-positive-will-i-die.html

Do I have to tell everyone that I’m HIV positive?

No. Who you tell your status is your own business. They only people that need to tell are anyone you are going to have unprotected sex with. Not disclosing your status is punishable by law. Any person who exposes another to HIV by engaging in unprotected sexual activity is guilty of a felony, when the infected person: 1) knows he/she is infected; 2) has not disclosed his/her HIV-positive status; and 3) acts with the intent to infect the other person with HIV. The felony charge is punishable in the state prison for three, five, or eight years.

http://www.cdph.ca.gov/programs/AIDS/Documents/RPT2002AIDSLaws.pdf

How do I protect myself and my partner from contracting HIV?

Getting tested, knowing your status and limiting risk-factors for contracting the virus like sharing needles or having unprotected sex with other people, is the best way to protect yourself and your partner. Many health advocates suggest getting tested at least 3 to 4 times a year and more depending on the person’s sexual behaviors.

Can you tell someone is HIV positive just by looking at them?

No. A person living with HIV may look healthy and feel good just like you. A blood test is the only way a person can find out if he or she is infected with HIV.

Why Did We Allow the Antics of Sharkeisha to go Viral vs The Accomplishments of Black Girls Code?

Sharkeisha In a war, those in the battlefield may sometimes be required to make sacrifices for the betterment of those standing alongside them… some may sacrifice their lives so that others can survive.. but more often than not the sacrifices made will be ones that cause some for a moment to remove themselves from their comfort zone..

There should be no doubt for many reading this, that we are in a war to win the hearts and minds of our kids and each other..Some dub it an information war. We are bombarded with images and messaging by the thousands that hit us every minute, working on our conscious and subconscious.

The end is to lessen critical thinking and get folks to become consummate consumers for whatever is being sold, product, ideology, culture etc.. At it times seems to be working. And why shouldn’t it? Millions of dollars are poured into research and focus groups so that at the end of the day collectively speaking we move in one direction and not another..

It with these thoughts in mind, that we should look at the tale of two groups teens and our reaction to them.. By now many of y’all have probably heard or saw the video out of Houston, Tx of a 16-year-old girl named Sharkeisha who sucker punched a friend and pummeled her.. The video has gone viral receiving more than 11 million views in less than a week.. Lots of blogs have been written about it as well as parodies and skits.. Sharkeisha is the talk of the town.

The young lady has thus far relished the attention and made light of the fact that cops were looking for her as she boldly proclaimed she’d do it again.. She did this on her twitter account.. The victim Shay Manuel has been traumatized http://www.khou.com/news/local/Viral-beatdown-video-victimizes-17-year-old-again-and-again-233795091.html  You can also read her statements here… http://rollingout.com/shame-on-you/sharkeisha-fight-victim-speaks-shares-photos-injuries/

Black Girls CodeThe conversation about teen violence is one we should not shy away from. Its important.. At the same time while we have conversations that go along the lines of ‘our kids are out of control‘,  ‘our kids are dangerous‘, ‘our kids our lost‘..etc, one might ask why are we not upholding and making the videos of young teens who are doing the right thing go viral.. Case in point, while we are debating this sucker punch video, very little attention is being paid to Black teenage girls from Black Girls Code.. These are young sisters, many of them from the hood who are stepping up and making major moves as high-tech coders. They are the ones who do the designing..

The woman who founded them two years ago Kimberly Bryant just received a prestigious award at the White House  over the summer and if I’m correct one the young girls from Black Girls Code was on the cover of Wired magazine  with the caption.. ‘The Next Steve Jobs‘..  The year ebfore they were nicely profiled in Colorlines http://colorlines.com/archives/2012/07/black_girls_code.html

The sisters put out a video a couple of weeks ago and to date its gotten 700 views.. Very few are turning to them and big upping their work and making them go viral.. Why is that? It’s not like they haven’t been in the news. They are obviously being featured in quite a few places.. But are we featuring them in our day to day conversations? Are we holding them up as a model for others to follow?

We say this is what we want our kids to do. We say we want them to make headway into once inaccessible industries, bust down doors and be success stories, but are we featuring them in the context of us being at war and on the battlefield? Are we featuring them  knowing that with all the exposure and conversation we are having about Skarkeisha we may inspire others who seek attention to go that route vs the route of the young sisters in Black Girls Code?

What is it about us that we won’t push the envelop to big up young girls like these or make other organizations like Black Girls Rock  , Girls Like Me or BlackBird Fly household names and the standard we strive for?

Moving forward can we and will we take the bold steps of highlighting and talking up the young sisters in our community making it happen? Can we make them international news vs the over sensationalized fight? That may the step needed in the battlefield on this day..

American Exceptionalism Will Fail, The Republic Will Fall…Black Men Will Succeed

marcus-garvey-225I normally don’t do this but I woke up earlier this morning after having this profound dream…I was standing on a mountain and I could feel the presence of the ancestors.. At the same time I kept hearing these piercing moans…They were loud and it was obvious the people were in great, great pain.. They were wailing and shouting… ‘Nooooo!”

The screams frightened me and I was set to leave my location as I started to walk a great whirlwind appeared..Within the whirlwind was the face of Marcus Garvey... He looked sternly at me and said;  “Capitalism  and American decadence is failing those who cry out in pain…America is dead. American Exceptionalism is No More Black Men are set to Conquer”..

The whirl wind disappeared

I kept walking and could still hear the screams when on the side of the road I saw Sojouner Truth.. She smiled at me and said “Brother Truth is Powerful and it prevails… Black men will succeed, America will fail

She disappeared and I still heard the load moans.

I was still scared but I continued walking when I saw Malcolm… He looked at me with grave concern and said, “Be not afraid, There is no better teacher than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance the next time…Black Men have lost a lot but will move forward in victory..The fall of America is imminent. The failings of the Republic are inevitable

Malcolm disappeared and as the screams grew louder.. ‘Nooooo,  Noooo’ The wails were piercing and unnerving

Martin and CorettaAs I moved onward, I saw standing before me Martin holding hands with Coretta.. They both had pleasant smiles and Coretta said gently “Truth Crushed to Earth will Rise..Black Men are set to rise

I looked at puzzled..

Martin nodded and slowly and solemnly said in his preacher’s voice “Fear Not the Black Men will Rise…America is on the decline. Great wealth disparities and greed has done her in. Move upward in confidence knowing that the one star will fall to make way for many..”

As I moved down the mountain the screams of agony were louder and amongst the screams I heard threatening voices. The threats said no stone would be unturned to stop progress of Black Men.. but I surprisingly felt protected. I felt warmth…I felt there was no way to be stopped.

A little ways down the road, to the right of me sitting at a piano I saw Gil Scott-Heron. He’s my favorite artist. He was deep in thought, playing. He stopped and looked up at me and smiled;

Gil Scott HeronBrother Dave“, he said.. “In the final minutes of the final hour America will fall. I once said the Revolution will NOT be televised, but I now know that I was wrong. America will fall before the eyes of the world Brother Davey.. She will lose favor with the people..Black men will win my brother..Black men will win.. Nommo Brother Davey, Speak It into existence..Claim victory The Revolution WILL be televised

Gil disappeared and I woke up trying to make sense of the dream..I tried to put the pieces together…

American exceptionalism will fall,

Black men will rise up and win..

There will be screams of agony as opulence and symbols of greed fall. There will  thunderous applause For  Black Men and our victory will be televised?

What does it all mean? What is the meaning of this dream?

I looked up at the night sky and remembered Martin’s words to me.. ‘The one star will fall to make way for many’… ‘America’s Fall is imminent’.

Suddenly it hit me.. That could only mean one thing.. Today before the eyes of the nation and the world the one star aka the Lone Star will fall to make way for many…

Americas FallAmerica’s Fall is Imminent.. Her defeat is Imminent.. The fall of the Republic is inevitable…The Republic is Texas… America’s Team is the Cowboys….

Black men will succeed…  Black Men will win..Who are the Black men.. Men in Black? Raiders

Nommo.. Speak it into existence.. Claim victory

My dream is interpreted … Conclusion: The Raiders will beat America’s Team the Cowboys and the whole thing will be televised..and there will be a lot of moaning and groaning in the Republic of Texas.. Listen to the ancestors.. Boom! I feel good about today.. Damn Good..

Black Friday, Black Thursday-The Greed that Makes Up Thanksgiving

Davey-D-brown-frameFor many the celebration of Thanksgiving was always a problem because of the genocide that eventually befell Native Americans. The pillaging of land and resources, rape of women and other atrocities for the most part have been erased from our history books and replaced with the story of a festive feast where humanity was recognized and family and community uplifted..

For decades Thanksgiving was one of the few days poor and working class people had off and so in spite of the hidden history of genocide, Thanksgiving had evolved to become a day and time that we spent with family. In short we collectively brought into the idea behind the holiday and for the most part that was a good thing..

Sadly what we are seeing come to the surface are the true colors of this country.. Thanksgiving is not about family and strengthening community. It’s not about giving thanks.. It’s about making money..We saw this emerge with the concept of Black Friday…

About 10-15 years ago we started hearing about bargain basement sales if you were willing go to the mall the day after Thanksgiving. Up to that time most folks would stay home and hang out. For me I recall there would be an annual flag football game between friends and old classmates. Black Friday sales at the mall got hyped up every year and eventually the Football game was jetted for Black Friday. Eventually people turned Black Friday into a family activity So Thursday you’d eat a big meal and the next day you would link up with loved ones and spend a day at the mall..

Black Friday stampedeIt wasn’t long before retailers not satisfied with packed malls which had evolved to serve as defacto family and class reunion hubs started doing these ‘door buster sales,’ which meant folks would no longer take time to show up at the mall, but instead they would have to get up at the crack of dawn to wait on line for a mall to open its doors at 5am…Gone was the family gathering aspect. It was replaced by desperation and greed. Hungry shoppers were no longer leisurely strolling the mall with kids in tow marveling at extravagant Christmas window displays. Many were no longer looking for gifts for friends and relatives, but now standing on line to get something for themselves.  Many would be willing to stampeded over women and children and anyone else who got in their way.

The news stories about happy shoppers and the festiveness we saw at malls were replaced by stories people getting killed or seriously getting injured as folks made mad dashes for the limited items placed on sale.. Each year we saw footage or heard tales of full on fist fights and assaults with patrons fighting over the last cabbage patch dolls or that one last video camera or the only widescreen TV. Others would find themselves getting robbed in the parking lots moments after making bargain basement purchases.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dIBL4tYQPI

It wasn’t long before folks instead of showing up at the mall at the crack of dawn, started showing up earlier and earlier. Some would arrive at 3 or 4am in the morning. The lines got longer and loner to the point that folks simply started camping out in front of stores foregoing Thanksgiving meals… The media working in synch with retailers who would spend large sums of money on TV ads would send multiple camera crews to all the malls to show the long lines  and then would position themselves to get the ultimate ‘money shot’ which were hundreds of people stampeding.. The follow-up would be a list of reports about violent incidents and near riots breaking out at various spots around the country..The Thanksgiving feast was becoming an after thought..

Black FridayLast year or the year before,  greedy retailers decided to push the envelope and instead of opening doors at 5am for door buster sales, announced they would open the doors at midnight.. There was some push back but that criticism was quickly dimmed out as media hyped up the sales of TVs, computers and tablets at prices too good to be true.. If you recall last year we were actually told how cheap a 50 inch TV would be and that if we wanted one we better line up at midnight.. They didn’t tell folks that those super cheap items were limited in number..The end result was hundreds of thousands of folks leaving their families and to line up at stores with lines snaking for blocks in some areas..

Here in the Bay Area I went to cover stories att several malls. Each place I went had long lines. The most outrageous was in Emeryville.  The line to get into Best Buy had several thousand people and snaked out of the parking lot all the way to the freeway by 9pm… Very few were online to get gift for Uncle Johnny and Aunt Maggie.. It was about getting a TV for themselves.. Others made this a business and would pay people to stand on-line. Others were there to get as much as they could for cheap only to turn around and sell it on Ebay or in Craigslist for a profit.. The family feast was pretty much a wrap. There would be no more after diner card playing or family chats down memory lane.. It was about eating and dashing off to the mall for stores opening at midnight..

Black ThursdayThis year we are now hearing reports that Black Friday is being phased out..as retailers and malls are opening up on Thanksgiving with the some stores promising of door buster sales at 8pm tonight.. Others are saying they will have door buster sales all day.. What’s lost are days off for low wage workers. many will not be getting overtime or double time pay especially those working at big box stores.. What’s lost is family time. What’s lost is the concept of giving thanks.. This is now being hyped up as Black Thursday…

If you think about it what we are seeing is the completion of a circle.. That first ‘Thanksgiving meal between Native Americans and invading pilgrims was underlined by their greed and the desire to take over.. It wasn’t about the feast, it was about sizing folks and getting them ready to be slaughtered. We are now seeing that today is folks getting primed up to be economically and spiritually slaughtered..We will soon have a generation that will look at the holidays not as a time to spend time with family and loved ones, but a time to go shopping and score a good deal for self..

Port of Oakland Truckers are Set to Strike.. Here’s our Intv Breaking down the situation

Oakland Truckers Strike

We talked with independent Oakland truck driver Isaiah Thomas about the plight of independent truckers who use the Port of Oakland and the wretched conditions and harsh mistreatment many have to endure.

For starters they are being forced to spend up to $80k to modify their expensive trucks. They are made to sit with engines idling for up to 6 hours to load and pick up a delivery when its been shown and proposed that time could be more efficiently used by the Port companies.

The cost of gas and other expenses incurred for operating a truck runs on average 6-7k a month, not counting the new payments they will have to make for truck modifications. The independent truckers have banned together to form Port of Oakland Truckers Association (POTA) and after having exhausted just about every option, which includes meeting with Oakland Mayor Jean Quan to meeting with Port officials to going before California Air Resource Board (CARB)

The Port of Oakland Truckers are set to strike 6 am ..Wednesday Nov 27 2013..

Here’s a couple of good articles to bring you up to speed:

Mistah Fab Speaks About His Annual Food Drive & Gentrification in North Oakland

mistah-fabWe caught up with long time Oakland rapper Mistah Fab to talk to him about his 6th annual holiday giveaway. He will be giving away turkeys and plates of food for needy families in North Oakland off 45th and Market today (Tues Nov 27th ) where he grew up.

During our interview we talked at length about what Fab describes as the unwritten obligation artists have to give back to the community. He noted that many get paid handsomely from talking about the struggles, tribulations and overall lifestyle experienced by many in the hood. The least one can do is give back and not make this a one way street where you only take, take, take..

We talked about some of the Oakland artists and sports figures who have already done food drives like Seattle Seahawk running back Marshall Lynch and Cincinnati Bengal quarterback Josh Johnson. Fab noted how troubling it was to see over 500 families lining up at Oakland Tech where Lynch and Johnson attended school to get food. He noted that it was a clear indication about how dire it is for many and that at all costs all of us who can do better by extending a helping hand.

We also talked about the massive gentrification that is taking place in North Oakland and what sort of challenges its presented for his community. Fab noted that not too long ago during one of his charity events, new residents called the police in attempt to shut things down.. Fab found out who called and went and had a conversation and noted that dialogue is crucial.

Mistah Fab He said new comers to Oakland need to respect the people and culture that is already here and get familiar with things.. At the same time he noted that many who he grew up with need to be better educated about the process that’s unfolding.

He said many younger folks inherited houses from parents and grandparents and have been offered 300-400k  to sell their homes. Fab noted while that’s nice chunk of change, its important to hold on to your property because in the long run it will be worth twice as much..We also talked about his song writing prowess..

Lastly we concluded our convo about Fab and his song writing prowess. He laid out the artists he’s been working with, like Snoop Dogg and Too Short and some of the new projects he has on the horizon like the one with Keyisha Coles

Don’t Believe all the Media Hype about the Knock Out Game-It’s Propaganda 101

Davey-D-brown-frameSo today for the umpteenth time we saw another news story, designed to cause mass hysteria with solemn sounding anchors telling us to be on ‘high alert’ for roving gangs of Black youth participating in this nationwide trend called ‘The Knock Out Game‘..

As anchors launch into their tales of terror showing us the same grainy stock footage which includes a teacher being knocked out in New Jersey from two years ago and a woman being knocked out in London, a ticker tape runs across the bottom of our screens telling us police are on the look out for these ‘young thugs’ and have ordered extra patrols…

The story depending on what city you see it reported, will then tell you about two bike riders in St Louis being knocked out or Black kids in Brooklyn looking for Jews to knock out.. There’s a report of some kid knocking a woman out in San Diego..All the reports show the same video footage of some young teens in Jersey bragging about how they knock folks out.. By then our blood is either boiling or we are scared to death.

The anchors voices then get shrill as they pull out a map detailing what parts of the country the attacks have happened. In the past month there have been 7 knock outs and according to the anchors the videos are being posted all over YouTube by the hundreds.

All the news stories then launch into a field reporter interviewing someone who knows of a friend who knows a friend who got knocked out and went to the hospital because of the knock out game..

Knock Out Game These news stories from coast to coast end with the reporters telling us two people have been killed by what police think MAY have been a version of the knock out game..We are left concluding that we no longer need to fear terrorists organizations like Al Qaeda, but instead be wary of marauding Black Youth. The message is when you see them run. Why? Because they are gonna knock you out.

These reports have understandably led to some harsh reactions with many publishing blogs and posting YouTube vlogs promising to shoot if someone dares to try to knock them out. In fact if you go on-line, you are likely to find scores of threatening responses to the Knock Out Game then you are the same 3 or 4 videos all of from years past repeatedly being shown on news stations around the country reporting this ‘new‘ ‘disturbing trend‘.

It’s important that folks not get caught up in the hype of the Knock Out Game without putting it in historical, social and political context. First let’s be clear in understanding what this is.. the Knock Out game is ASSAULT.. and when a group of people are ‘targeting people at random’ to assault them, that is basically another form of BULLYING.

Knock Out Wylding teens Are assaults and bullying acceptable? Absolutely not. Should we be concerned? Of course but let’s be honest when reporting on this type of anti social behavior. Yes there are crimes that occur. Yes there are innocent folks who get attacked robbed etc.  But this is not whats being reported. many in the media are making it appear as if this is some sort of game spreading like wild fire from coast to coast. Its simply not true. The fact that they are taking any crime and calling it as part of knock out game trend is akin to when the police label every crime in certain communities ‘gang related’.

If we look at this honestly, every generation and every inner city has had some sort of ‘knock out game‘ or unsavory group action that was attributed to Black youth that the media brought to the forefront. These actions were never as big and widespread as reported but it made for good TV and gave politicians a chance to talk tough and push for new harsh laws.  What’s being report is now is the repackaging and rewording an age-old propaganda designed to stoke fears, increase ratings and justify demonizing and criminalizing entire groups of people.

For those who don’t know, the knock out game was called ‘wylding‘ or ‘rat packing‘ when I was coming up in New York. In Oakland it was called ‘mobbing‘ In other parts of the country it was called clocking, chin checking, and just plain old jumping. Under those names the image of vicious, out of control black teens were attached to them, but such activities should not be separated from those suburban teens who would head to the gay parts of town and jump folks in what we would commonly call gay bashing.

That should not be separated from the folks who would see Jewish kids wearing yarmulkes or what folks thought were black cowboy hats and snatch them or knock them off their heads and attack them, perceiving them to be weak. Others attacked them because they perceived to have lots of money and were easy pickings. Some would call it Jew Jumping.

That should not be separated from those who would see and attack Sikhs wearing turbans or Muslim women wearing hijab . This was ‘all the rage‘ after 9-11. Key word ‘rage’ which was used as justification.

Collge mob sceneThis should not be separated from roving teens who routinely have jumped and knocked out unsuspecting homeless folks over the years or folks who would shoot pellet guns at unsuspecting bike riders or throw rocks from freeways overpasses at unsuspecting drivers. or even full blown riots at college campuses .Often times such activities were reduced to kids just mischief-making.

None of this can separated from the vicious attacks that have routinely visited Mexican day labors by xenophobic types in violent versions of ‘Knock out’ commonly known as ‘Beaner Jumping‘ or ‘Wetback Whippings‘. In some parts of the country attacks on Mexican migrants would occur with folks referring to them as ‘Walking ATM Machines‘ because it was believed they carried cash were unlikely to report crimes to the police.

It was just a few years ago that our nation’s newspapers were splattered with headlines about how a group of suburban teens from Long Island attacked two Ecuadorean Brothers who were walking arm and arm thinking they were gay and ‘illegal’ gay and illegal brutally beat them with bats killing one. Once caught it was discovered that this group of teens who had dubbed themselves ‘The Caucasian Crew’ had been on a week-long spree of jumping Brown folks who they thought were undocumented.. They described Beaner Jumping as a commonplace game.. You can read about that HERE

9 year old Brisenia Flores was shot and killed after self-styled vigilante border patrollers suspected her family of being in this country illegally

9 year old Brisenia Flores was shot and killed vigilante border patrollers

In recent years we seen this immigrant bashing take on new heights with folks under the guise of ‘patrolling the border‘ and sporting names like Minute Men with many having Neo Nazi ties would see themselves playing the ultimate real life war game as they would head down to borders of Arizona and Texas in droves looking for ‘illegals’ to capture, beat up and sometimes shoot. Folks may wanna look up the tragic shooting death of Raul Flores and his 9-year-old daughter Brisenia by Minutemen who thought they were here illegally. Read about that HERE

Some of you reading this are old enough to recall that if you lived in New York City in the 70s there was a game called Kill Nigger Day and if you went to certain parts of town like Bensonhurst, Brookland, Pelham Bay in the Bronx, Howard Beach in Queens you were gonna get mobbed on by angry whites who basically did this for fun.

If you lived in Boston and went to South Boston same thing would happen. In fact folks may wanna look at the rap sheet of actor Mark Walhberg who as a youth was quite fond of jumping Blacks and Asians youth.. He was not an exception to what was often described by many as the most racist city in America. Read about that HERE.

In generations past in cities like LA the game was called Spook Hunting.. In fact there was white racist gang calling themselves the Spook Hunters who would patrol the borders of Watts and Mexican neighborhoods to make sure no Blacks or Brown folks would leave the area. For fun they would head into the area and attack folks. Many of these folks were war veterans.. You can read about that HERE..

We also know that many of those military folks , in particular sailors while on duty would routinely go out and bash on Mexicans wearing Zoot suits. The random attacks led to what we now call the Zoot Suit Riots. You can read aboutthat HERE

Later we would learn the police themselves under Chief William H Parker would patrol the Watts area which on the force was dubbed The Duck Pond Officers like the Spook Hunters would keep Blacks contained in that area and for fun would venture off into Watts to jam up folks  in sadistic activity called Duck Hunting.. They would go in and harass young Black teens with the goal of letting them know who was in charge. You can read about that HERE

In more recent days we saw the spook hunting, duck hunting mentality rear its ugly head during Katrina. In the Algiers section of New Orleans you had white mobs roaming around going ‘Peasant hunting‘ where Blacks were shot at random. At least 11 were killed as they were seeking refuge.  This is outlined in the documentary and ground breaking report Katrina’s Hidden Race War. You can Read about that HERE.

Last year we saw a group of deputies fired from the LA Sheriff department because of their random attacks on Black and Brown folks in LA in what was called Jumping.. They dubbed themselves the Jump Out Boys. You can read about that HERE

The Caucasion Crew of Long Island who did 'Beaner Jumping

The Caucasion Crew of Long Island who did ‘Beaner Jumping’

I could go on listing things, but the larger point I’m getting at is that sadly mob violence is as American as Apple Pie. From the ‘Knock Out Game’ and ‘Beaner Jumping’ to lynchings and vigilante justice. There have always been cowardly folks who hid behind large numbers, weapons and badges who have reigned sheer hell upon innocent people. Its bullying 101 and folks of all stripes have had a hand in this. None of it is excusable. None of it should be accepted. It should not be excused as boys being boys or teens just doing a little mischief-making.  This why the knock out game reporting has been so troubling, because it acts like this is something new and isolated to one group of people vs it being systemic with deep-seated roots in our country’s psyche. In fact the media sensationalizing and outright lying about a trend that doesn’t exist could be characterized as a game of Knock Out by proxy, because the end result will be folks reacting aggressively and maybe even fatally to imagined dangers conjured up by media hype. The case of Jordan Davis, Trayvon Martin and now Renisha McBride are examples of this over reaction.

With all these recent news reports of Knock Outs folks may be quick to forget it was just two weeks ago these same reporters were telling us to hide our cell phones because everyone was getting them snatched and with daylights saving times the FEAR’ was evil cell phone snatchers would be out in droves looking to make you a victim..

We have forgotten that it was just a year ago that these same anchors were warning us to watch out ‘Flash mobs’ of Black youths that were going on terror sprees attacking white folks all over the country from Milwaukee to Philly and we needed to be on the look out. In fact the Mayor of Philly Michael Nutter went ahead and passed legislation for Youth curfews. Other cities around the country used the Flash mob reports and attempted to follow suit.

Many of us have forgotten that not too long before the Flash Mob news reports we were told that the evil, vicious Mexican cartels were now invading America and taking over the drug trade and attacking folks and that we need to run for the hills. Many forgot that we were being bombarded with stories and numerous TV specials about MS-13 the World Most Dangerous Gang and they were an international super predator gang that was taking over cities all over America.

There were even some ‘special reports’ linking them to terrorists organizations like Al Qaeda and more recently Hezbollah. Needless to say these reports caused a big stir which helped usher in anti-immigrant bills like SB1070 and HB 86 in Alabama.

It led to lawmakers from Texas to Florida to California warning us to watch out for ‘anchor babies’ and ‘terror babies’ as they used the reports as rationale to try to change the constitution that would disallow children born in the US from undocumented parents from being citizens. The threat of the Brown menace was used as an excuse to get billions, not millions of dollars to new border walls.

Ironically the same companies building walls here in the US are the same companies building walls in Israel/Palestine where hysteria around Brown Arabs wylding out has led to economic windfall. Lets just keep it 100% real, the threat of the Black Brute and Brown menace is Big Business for a lot of people. It’s a tradition that dates back a century in popular media from the days of Birth of a Nation which led to the rise of the KKK to the lies told about rapes and murders in the Superdome during New Orleans to now..Zeaolous politicians and law and order types reacting to these false narratives can easily build political capital, using communities and groups of people who are not fully prepared to counter…

The nationwide hype of the ‘knock out game’ are designed to get us hysterically upset, fearful and angry resulting in us embracing policies and laws that will soon be proposed that justify racial profiling designed to protect us (translation: protect good white folks from ‘out of control Black and Brown mobs’)

***Update to this story..*** as predicted: A bill is being drafted to give folks who play the knock out game’ 4-25 yrs depending on age..If I was abetting man I’d say this is a playbook from ALEC designed to sweep the country state by state.. end goal fill the prisons..Watch miinor things become ‘Knock Out Related.. http://foxnewsinsider.com/2013/11/25/ny-lawmaker-james-tedisco-proposes-tough-new-law-%E2%80%98knockout-game%E2%80%99-perpetrator

A New York state legislator is drafting a new bill to increase the penalty for crimes related to the terrifying and deadly new “Knockout Game” trend. A 25-year sentence is being proposed for teens ages 14 and up who play the game, film it, or stand by and watch.

New York State Assemblyman James Tedisco told Elisabeth Hasselbeck on this morning’s Fox and Friends, “We can’t let kids use their youth as a way to get out of a serious and very violent series of incidents which are happening and continue to expand.”
