Beats for the Revolution: The World Must Hear the Words of a Sista

Today is International Women’s Day and and we wanna celebrate with Beats for the Revolution. Hopefully all of us take time out to not only reflect on the challenges facing our mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, aunties and grandmas on the daily. Ideally we take time out to reflect on the constant war that’s being waged on them.
Sadly that war manifests itself in the form of sexist and over the top abusive remarks to physical assaults and rapes. It manifests itself institutionally as predominantly male law makers stand in the way of ensuring women get equal pay, equal protection, have full control and say so of their bodies or have opportunities to escape rampant poverty.
Hopefully all of us take time out to not only reflect, but take bold decisive steps to help eradicate the conditions that cause the women such hardships…A society is judged by the way it treats its women and children and right now as advanced as America likes to think she is, we are seriously lacking in the way we engage our sisters.. If you don’t believe me, take some time out and do something really revolutionary-Try listening to what our mothers, sisters, daughters aunties and grandmas have to say..That’s right Listen.. Don’t talk. Don’t object. Don’t make excuses.. Listen, Learn, Embrace their words and Step Up…
We did our thing the other day on All Day Play radio with our show Breakdown FM. We call its Beats for the Revolution and we dedicated it women rocking the mic..The point we wanted to get across was there is lots of good music out hence it’s unbelievable..There’s no excuses for those who say its lacking. With all the new technology, good music is there for the embracing..
Hundreds of female emcees are out there.. no excuse to say they are not.. From Dessa Darling to Kellee Maize to Vanessa German to Raw G to Aima the Dreamer to Devynity there’s a lot of sisters catching wreck.. One of the things we in Hip Hop must do is see our music as timeless and without limits..The music industry wants us to retire artists and dope jams from 5 or 10 years ago and act like they never existed.. That’s done so that we can develop the mindset of a consumer vs having the mindset of a cultural preserver..The saying Old is New and New is Old applies here.. 82 Year Old Black Woman Brutally Tossed Off Train for Singing Gospel Hymns

As we celebrate International Women’s Day we should note that the war on women continues in a very real way…Whether its one out of three women globally being sexually assaulted, an uptick in human trafficking, or sitting senators and congressmen resolute in their opposition to the Violence Against Women Act or locally where we see a brutish private security guard tossing an 82 year old Black woman off a train because she was singing gospel hymns ‘too loud’..
The video of Emma Anderson being dragged off a train last month to say the least is shocking and just a glaring reminder that none of our mothers, grandmothers, sisters, daughters and wives are safe from men who have a disdain and little respect for them..
The video below shows it all as the 82-year-old woman is seen singing. and slapping her thigh with rolled-up paper.
A security guard is then seen asking Anderson to stop. When Anderson refused, the guard grabbed her rolling luggage cart.
“You’re getting off here,” he can be heard telling Anderson. “Let’s go.” A struggle between the guard and Anderson ensued, and Anderson was pulled off the train, falling onto the platform at the downtown stop, about six miles from her intended destination of North Miami.
“It was not right for them to drag her off the train,” Donal Anderson, the woman’s son, told Miami’s WSVN-TV.
A spokeswoman for Miami-Dade Transit told the network that Anderson violated its noise policy, which prohibits commuters from singing, dancing and playing instruments.
“We regret that Ms. Anderson had to eventually be escorted out,” the spokeswoman said in a statement, “but regardless of age, all passengers need to abide by rules associated with using transit.”
“Well, y’all may call it ‘noise,'” the elderly South Floridian scoffed, “but wait till Jesus comes. It’s going to be more noise in there!”
One would think that the train authorities in Miami would have another more gentle way to remove a passenger from a train if in fact it was even necessary. many of our elders don’t always have full control of their faculties, some have demntia or just plain eccentric in their ways.. Regardless if she was loud, one must take a different more, gentle approach toward an unarmed, frail elder.. One might ask would this guard have been so violent if this was a group of guys ready and willing to fight back, would this transit security have been so bold?

Eric Holder Punks Out: Says Big Banks Are Too Big to Jail

“I am concerned that the size of some of these institutions becomes so large that it does become difficult for us to prosecute them when we are hit with indications that if you do prosecute, if you do bring a criminal charge, it will have a negative impact on the national economy, perhaps even the world economy,” he said. “And I think that is a function of the fact that some of these institutions have become too large.”
Those are the words of Attorney General Eric Holder..I want you to read that.. stop, reflect and read that again.. I don’t want any of you to dismiss it and say ‘Well that’s just the way it is..’ or ‘What else is new, government has always been like this..there’s nothing we can do about it..’
Holder uttered these words in response to Republican Senator Charles Grassley about why the Justice Department brought no criminal charges against HSBC, one of Great Britain’s largest banks after it admitted laundering money for parties in Iran, Libya and Mexican drug lords.
Again I ask you to stop think and reflect on this..
While its understandable that smashing back on the banks or Eric Holder will not be an overnight endeavor, we can not act like this is a problem to ignore. It should be an issue we raise up at every turn and push to demand accountability. We should demand it on the national level and we should demand it locally. We should be pushing for our local governments to sever ties with criminal institutions and we should be demanding that hard questions be asked of Attorney general and the our President who appointed him.. If you haven’t been touched by the nefarious activities of big banks in the form of foreclosures, downsizing increased banking fees, higher interest rates or the inability to get a loan, you will soon will be..For example, this is the same Eric Holder who’s Feds have been raiding and shutting down medical marijuana clubs all over the country in spite of overwhelming state approval both from voters and elected officials.. They’ll raid a pot club but will leave the fraudulent money laundering bank next door alone.. Go figure..
Today our friends over at Alternet dropped a good article on this… where they note as follows;
Holder’s outrageous admission means that bankers operate – and know they operate – above the law. That renders all the argument about regulations and legal limits risible. Bankers spend tens of millions lobbying to weaken regulations and starve regulators of authority and resources. But when the action gets hot, the bubble starts to build, the music keeps playing, they can trample the laws, mislead the regulators and defraud their customers, bolstered by the confidence that the laws will not apply to them.
Holder’s argument, however, is indefensible. There is no reason a bank with billions of assets could not survive the indictment of its CEO or CFO. If the Fed and Treasury can “foam the runway” to protect otherwise insolvent banks from collapse, they surely could insure that a bank survives while its executives are held personally responsible for their crimes. Putting a few bankers in jail and holding them personally accountable for their frauds would do much to bring sobriety back to Wall Street.

There’s a lot to be said about Hugo Chavez, the President of Venezuela who passed away yesterday from complications due to cancer.. For many he was considered a friend and a champion of the poor. He was seen as a hero who was willing to stand up to the United States and other western powers who have an egregious record in South America of undermining democratically elected leaders..
Two movies.. Harvest of Empire and South of the Border bring US policies out in painful detail.. They show how private companies and media outlets including our own CNN worked overtime to try and overthrow governments throughout Latin America. You can see in the clip that starts off South of the Border the round the clock demonization of South American leaders by our so-called esteemed media..
It’s important to understand our policies and what doesn’t get reported here in the states when viewing Hugo Chavez. A lot of what he did and didn’t do centers around the desire to see him removed from office by our own government..
It’s also important to understand that while Chavez was a charismatic singular face attached to Venezuela in terms of how he’s depicted here, in Latin America, he was part of a large movement. In short , he didn’t obtain his position in a vacuum. Nor can you explain Chavez or Venezuela in a 30 second sound bite..
Shortly after getting the news that he passed we broke into regular programming on KPFA and gathered up some folks to speak to Chavez and his legacy.. Our roundtable of guest are movers and shakers in a variety of circles and knew Chavez or did lots of ground work in the country over the years..
Our first guest was former Green Party Presidential candidate and congresswoman Cynthia McKinney..She set the tone by breaking down US foreign policy in Latin America and the great lengths our government has gone to try and undermine leaders they didn’t like. McKinney talked at length about Cointel-pro and what has happened to leaders domestically, hence we should not be shocked at the type of hostilities shown internationally..She also talked about Chavez and what he meant to his people as well as sharing her own stories about him…Here’s our interview..
We spoke with author and Professor Sujatha Fernandes who wrote the ground breaking book ‘Who Can Stop the Drums? Urban Social Movements in Chávez’s Venezuela‘ .. Here Professor Fernandes reveals a significant dimension of political life in Venezuela since President Hugo Chávez was elected. Fernandes traces the histories of the barrios, from the guerrilla insurgency, movements against displacement, and cultural resistance of the 1960s and 1970s, through the debt crisis of the early 1980s and the neoliberal reforms that followed, to the Chávez period.
During our interview with myself and fellow KPFA host Mitch Jeserich, Fernandes provides additional keen insights around what life on the ground was like for the average Venezuelan and the impact Chavez’s policies had on folks..She also speaks to why Chavez had been and will continue to be demonized here in the US..
Also on the line with us and Fernandes was Carlos Martinez who lived in Venezuela and is the co-editor of the book Venezuela Speaks; Voices from the Grassroots. We spoke with activist and popular Hip Hop artist Immortal Technique who talked about his trips to Venezuela and what he learned from traveling extensively around the country. He said he learned a lot and it was clear that Chavez meant a lot to the poor folks and poor communities. He noted that Chavez was not very well liked within the circles of the elite and they were constantly working to get at him.. Immortal talked at lengths some of the key strengths of Chavez as well as some of his actions and policies that were problematic.. Tech also noted that one can not sum up Chavez in a quick sentence, his presidency was much more complex..

What’s Up with Congressman Charles Rangel Selling Out?

When I first read these quotes posted below from Harlem Congressman Charles Rangel in response to President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela calling George Bush a ‘Devil’ and later an ‘alcoholic’, I had to keep asking myself; ‘Did this fool forget about the all the voter disenfranchisement that took place in Florida during the 2000 election’? Has he forgotten President Bush was backing a coup attempt against Chavez? If I tried to kill your family or career and you survive the attack wouldn’t you be calling me a Devil?
I guess if we follow Rangel’s logic, then all the leaders of those countries that wished to criticize, any US President about unfair and unjust wars and foreign policy or our one time support of Apartheid in South Africa and Jim Crow Laws against Blacks in this country had better shut their mouths.
Wasn’t it outside pressure and criticism that help loosen up some of the wrong doings that took place against oppressed people here? In addition hasn’t Bush and other US leaders been running around calling other countries evil (Iran and North Korea) and cowardly(France)?

But I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.. At the end of the day, he’s the same Charles Rangel that wants to reinstate the draft. What a sell out. The only conclusion I come to is that Bush has pictures of Rangel in some sort of compromising position and hence he felt a need to defend the President. Who knows, maybe there’s a wide-angle shot that we don’t know about that show’s our ‘distinguished’ Harlem Congressman in the infamous R. Kelly sex tape video.

The NRA Says Blacks Need Guns for Protection in a New Ad

I found this latest ad from the NRA (National Rifle Association) featuring a Black man named Colion Noir stating that African-Americans needs guns to protect themselves to be intriguing on a number of levels. He talks about how the government which has a history of racism will not be there for us, hence protecting one’s family is on us..
A couple of things to think about..In the ad Colion mentions the racist government but then tells us how the proverbial hood thugs ‘Ray Ray‘ and ‘Pookie‘ got guns and that President Obama and the govt wont be there to protect us hence.. He says its best we get our guns..
To a degree some of that may be true, but lets look at the sleight of hand Noir and the NRA pulls..While many African-Americans need protection from inner city crime, they also need protection from the government that also terrorizes Black folks..

In the ad Noir omits and redirects an important part of history, by inferring that the racist US government allowed white supremacist groups like the KKK to come after us.. Let’s keep it real many of those folks in wearing those hoods were police and government officials. In their height during the 1920s when Black folks were being lynched left and right, the Klan was a major force in politics..
Black folks if they were to use guns to defend themselves as suggested in the ad, would have to do so against the police and many within local and national government.. That would include mayors and governors who referred to us as ‘niggers‘ while standing before us with state troopers preventing us from attending segregated schools or voting.
When civil rights advocates like Fannie Lou Hammer spoke about being dragged off buses and beaten for trying to register folks to vote in Mississippi, it wasn’t hooded KKK members doing the beatings.. It was the state troopers.. If guns were needed for protection it was against those troopers.. What was the NRA’s take on incidents like that in the 1960s?
What was the NRA really saying with this Noir ad and how does it stack up with their historic actions in the past when gun laws were passed by the government to disarm militant Black groups like the Black Panthers Party for Self Defense? In 1967 after the Black Panthers following the letter of the law, armed themselves and began patrolling their neighborhoods to make sure the police would cease brutalizing law-abiding citizens, the Mulford Act of 1967 was passed in California to disarm them..
The person who pushed for that law the hardest was lifetime NRA member then Governor Ronald Reagan who is quoted as saying “We will never disarm any American who seeks to protect his or her family from fear and harm.” ..Well a big middle finger to Reagan and the NRA who stood silent when the disarming of Panthers, SNCC and other groups happened. Having a slick ad with an African-American talking about Black history and racism while neglecting the racism of the NRA and its most visible members when it was needed most is the height of disingenuousness..
Over the past 40+ years since the Mulford Act was passed where we’ve seen a sordid legacy of police in Cali shooting, killing and brutalizing, African-Americans, the NRA has been nowhere around to offer comfort, resources or solutions.. Where was this nice NRA ad with Colion Noir when unarmed Oscar Grant was shot point blank in the back by an out of control BART cop? Where was the NRA when the infamous Riders scandal and the Rampart scandal were jumping off in Oakland and LA? How was the NRA helping citizens who needed to protect themselves from a tyrannical government represented by the police?
Where was the NRA when John Burge was torturing Black folks as a Chicago Police commander?
In Chicago, a city with one of the strictest gun control laws in the country, where was the NRA during the reign of terror of Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge? Between the years 1972 and 1991 over 130 African-Americans some as young as 13 were tortured.. (note not beaten.. tortured) by this Burge and his men.. You can read about that HERE ..The 135 cases is what’s been documented, many believe its was hundreds more.. When Chicagoans made their plight known, where was the NRA? Where was ads like the one with Noir? Nowhere to be seen..
We can go on and on citing police brutality incidents on unarmed citizens and the NRA being ghost.. So why are they visible now? Did they have a change of heart or are they walking a razor thin line in terms of how they describe the enemies African-Americans neeed to protect themselves against? Yes many folks in the community have to deal with crime.. Pookie and Ray Ray do cause problems.. I’m not sure if shooting them is the answer, but if it is as the NRA suggests, then we have some other enemies to get at as well.. Will the NRA be standing with us the next time an unarmed Black youth is shot and killed by police? Will they have an ad advocating we protect ourselves or will they remain silent like they did in the past?
