They say alot of strange things come out of Texas. Earlier this year we heard elected officials like state rep Debbie Riddle talk about how this country needed to be wary of so-called Terror babies.
We heard another official, state rep Betty Brown insists that Asian people need to get English names. We heard the sitting governor Rick Perry threaten to have Texas secede from the union.
If all that wasn’t enough we had to endure the literal white washing and re-writing of Texas History books by a far right fanatical group that took over the Texas State Board of Education.
Over the past year we seen disgruntled Texan Fausto Cardenas shoot up the state capitol a while an angry Joseph Andrew Stack flew his plane into an IRS building killing former 20 year army veteran Vernon Hunter.
Yes a lot of strange things go on in that state and far too often with violent consequences. Should we be concerned? Based on the history absolutely. This is why many in the Lone Star state aren’t laughing at the outlandish remarks made by GOP candidate Stephen Broden who threatened violence if the Republicans don’t get their way.
According to the Dallas Morning News, Broden a South Dallas Pastor who is squaring off against long time incumbent Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson in Dallas’ 30th Congressional District, said a violent uprising is not the first option but it’s on the table.
Broden explained in an interview with WFAA TV reporter Brad Watson “If the government is not producing the results or has become destructive to the ends of our liberties, we have a right to get rid of that government and to get rid of it by any means necessary,”.
He added to his remarks that the United States was founded on a violent revolt against Britain’s King George III and if we have a constitution remedy to Barack Obama administration which he sees as tyrannical. Broden feels the answer is ‘revolution the violent over throw of the government.
GOP leaders distanced themselves from his remarks, but stop short of calling for his ouster. Could you imagine if someone who was Muslim said this while running for office? How does a Pastor like Stephen Broden justify threatening violence if the GOP doesn’t win? What part of the Bible was he reading? We should all be appalled.
Oh yeah one added twist to this saga and I’m not sure if it makes much of a difference, Broden is a Black man..

Broden is an idiot. But I’m not surprised. The GOP are desparate for any black person to join their organization, as long as they think like them (GOP). I was listeniing to the Laura Ingrahm show just recently she was interviewing a lawyer whom she went to school with, who happens to be a Republican. She asked him if he had encountered any criticism from other blacks for being a Republican…When he didn’t answer in the talkiing points she expected, she went on a rant about how she worked with Justice Thomas, and how she heard blacks call him Uncle Tom and other not so nice words. She talked about Rev. Sharpton, and Rev. Jackson, saying no one respects them. She bragged about how much in commom she had with PEOPLE like Justice Thomas and her guest, how wonderful and respectful they were. You know, HER KIND OF BLACK PERSON!…IT WAS STUNNING!
So I came away from that program with the conclusion that Ms. Ingrahm is trying to TURN BLACKS AGAINST EACH OTHER. She and the GOP are offering free passes to the GOP if you can throw Rev. Sharpton and Rev. Jackson under the bus. Why would any person do that? Rev. Sharpton, and Rev. Jackson stood up for black folk when they were too afraid to stand up for themselves. Have they made mistakes along the way? YES, but who hasn’t? Now this is America, we as black folk can join any organization we want. But when the litmus test is trashing people who made a way for you, then that sounds like a free pass to UncleTomDom!
This guy (Broden) is just trying to get points with white folks. They’ll use him for a while, then throw his a@@ back on the plantation. I grew up in Dallas. A lot of people don’t like Rick Perry (he’s called Governor Fancy here for some reason) and the ‘terror babies’ nonsense. These idiots make us all look bad!
In my opinion, the government has been good to us colored folks. So now that we’ve been accepted into society(quote, unquote), we’ve gotten way to comfortable with our new found freedom. Obama hasn’t even been given time to fix the economy.
I saw Broden make his silly comments on television. I am in agrement with edie. As I have watched and studied the players and the rhetoric since we elected President Obama I am convinced the right wing is using the southern strategy. They are freely saying what they think us whites want to hear (they are wrong as far as I am concerned!) and trashing in such vile terms our black and latino and gay brothers and sisters hoping to win the white vote. They are also working their rear ends off trying to turn blacks against each other. I am 60 yr-old and in all my life I have not witnessed this level of hateful rhetoric. Yes there has been racism, but I am so very ashamed of my country right now as I watch the republicans trying to push our nation off the cliff into a pit of hate and violence just so they can reclaim power and destroy our President. I pray for him & his family and I pray the Lords arms incircle those whom the right wing attack on a daily..on an hourly basis! We cannot allow them to take power again. We cannot allow them to push their hateful agenda in our country. We all must vote and send a clear message we are going to put a stop to their sick, fearmongering, hatefilled rants and legislation!
As someone who lives in Dallas, I don’t think we have to worry much about Mr. Budden getting elected. I consider myself pretty aware of what’s happening in the church community and I can honestly say I never even heard of this character until this story broke. His congregation wouldn’t even be in the top 50 churches among black people in Dallas which is the majority of the district he hopes will elect him.
His best hope is that people will automatically vote against E.B. Johnson because of her recent scandal which is a real possibility. But this type of publicity won’t do him much good. Now that I know who the alternative is, my vote will be against him (rather than for Eddie Bernice Johnson) and I think most voters will do the same in this district.
He may be the darling of Fox news and conservatives on the national scene. But that won’t carry much stock in a district where popularity carries so much weight.
Ms. Mitchell,
I thank you so much for your comment. And I just want you to know that I am by no stretch of the imagination falling for the myth that ALL WHITES want President Obama to fail. I don’t believe that for a minute. I have lived around and worked around white people all my life. White people are in my family.
FOX NEWS will grow larger and stronger and we will become even more divided if America does not stand up against all this HATE. I don’t want them out of business (FOX NEWS or LIMBAUGH) I just want to see the good in America push back, like NPR did…People like you give me hope. .
