“By the Time I Get to Arizona” — This Discrimination Must Stop

The Arizona immigration bill — which Governor Jan Brewer has decided to sign into law — is racist, deceitful, and reflects some of the most mean-spirited politics against immigrants that the country has ever seen. The power that this law gives to police to detain people that they suspect to be undocumented brings racial profiling to a new low. Brewer’s actions and those of Joe Arpaio, Russell Pearce, the Arizona State Senate are despicable, inexcusable, and endorse the all-out hate campaign that Joe Arpaio, Russell Pearce, and others have perpetrated upon immigrants for years. The people of Arizona who voted for this bill, as well as those who crafted it, demonstrate no regard for the humanity or contributions of Latino people. And for all of those who have chosen not to speak up, shame on you for silently endorsing this legislated hate.

This should include the NBA playoffs, revisiting the actions of the NFL in 1993, when they moved the Superbowl to Pasadena in protest against Arizona’s refusal to recognize Dr. King. We all need to speak up in defense of our brothers and sisters being victimized in Arizona, because things are only getting worse. What they’re doing to immigrants is appalling, but it will be even more damning if we remain silent.

There presently is a multi billion dollar wall funded by the United States with similar isolationist separatist policies …the wall between the US and Mexico. In Mexico, new figures have been released showing more than 5,000 Mexican migrants have died trying to reach the United States since 1994. Mexico’s National Human Rights Commission says an average three migrants lost their lives every two days in the US-Mexico border region in 2007 and 2008. This fiscal year revenues from individual income taxes is down 11.8%, corporate taxes down 63.3% and use tax is down 15.4%

It’s all too bad that many in the black American community have fallen into what is called Afro-Saxonism. back in ’08 I had the pleasure of attending a lecture by Felipe’ Luciano, one of the ex-Last Poets, and who is of black-Puerto Rican background..
He took the time out to point out the shared history of struggle with blacks and brown-latinos in the New World, North and South America..
He emphasized that blacks should support the immigration movement, and not succumb to the reactionary rhetoric that the conservative culture likes to espouse.. For all the “true Afrikan soldiers” out there, you cannot get mad at a Mexican for being a day laborer at whatever job when your black brother/sister/etc. doesn’t want to get up before 11 a.m. because they’ve been balling at the club or playing videogames until 5 a.m., etc. How many heads refuse to work at a restaurant or retail place, McDonald’s/Wal-Mart, etc., because “they ain’t payin nothin’!”? but when we shop at Wal-mart we get mad at how many Latinos are up in there pushing carts or whatever.. How many heads get mad because it’s a group of Latinos cutting lawns in the neighborhood, but our folk want to buy a set of car rims instead of a mower & other equipment to start a business? People need to have a lot more intellectual honesty in place before they call themselves coming to their conclusions..
Hype I think that narrative fits some people.. I definitely heard such talk, I hate to think it applies to alot of us.. the more insidious side to this where people like Robert fall prey to is simple divide and conquer over some bullshit.. That entitlement argument usually comes in the form of people saying ‘We marched w/ Dr King during the 60s and they (Latinos) werent there..’
First, many of those folks making such claims never did anything including march.. and 2-They selectively decided to ignore volumes of history that clearly show there were resistent movements, liberation struggles and of overt oppresion in brown and tellow communities all over this country.. . Also the different parts of the country have different ways in which things played out.. The shared struggle Blacks and Puerto Ricans had in NY maybe different than what Blacks and Chicanos endured in Texas which is even more different in California..

Arizona can pass race base laws, pass Birthers laws, pass no permit conceal weapons laws and the state boycotted Martin Luther King Day, well the rest of the Country can boycott the state of Arizona and spank them where it hurts them the most their pocket book. Let’s face it the Republicans had eight years to deal with health care, immigration, climate change and financial oversight and governance and they failed. I heard that Orly Taitz now wants to investigate the “Republican 2009 Summer of Love” list: Assemblyman, Michael D.
