I just got the sad news that Mr Magic has passed away this morning (10/3/09) from a heart attack.
Mr Magic has been my mentor & his legendary Hip-Hop show “RAP ATTACK” on NY’s WBLS is THE show that played a BIG influence on my first Hip-Hop show on Seattle’s 1250 KFOX back in the 80’s, including the name for my Hip-Hop show “KCMU RAP ATTACK” from the 90’s to late 2000 & now with www.RapAttackLives.com.
Thank you Mr Magic for being such a positive influence in my Radio & Hip-Hop career. I owe a lot of my success to you because as a teenager I wanted to be just like you.

If you ever read a book called “The Origin Of Rap Music”, (1994) Mr. Magic’s name is already there listed as a Pioneer of Rap Music. This was 15 years ago. Let’s not just throw him in the “hip-hop” mix. He pioneered “Rap Music” on radio, a music Black people created. Let’s respect what he really did.

Sylvia Robinson, Bobby Robinson, Mr. Magic, King Tim III, Sugar Hill Gang, Younger Generation, Grand Master Flash and The Furious 5, Lady B, Sequence, Spoonin G, Treacherous 3, Crash Crew, Disco Four, The Funky 4 plus One More, Grand Groove, Kurtis Blow, Super Rhymes, Micstro, Count Cool Out, Super Wolf and others were all involved in pushing and promoting “Rap Music”. Sylvia set up the industry out of “New Jersey” (1979) and Mr. Magic pushed and promoted the industry through New Jersey (1979) through the radio with his “Rap Attack Show” on up to WBLS in New York. Bobby Robinson was just the New York dude cashing in just like the Bronx was waiting to do. People like to say “history” doesn’t matter, but it does matter when you have Black people starting something and never getting the credit and another people come along and make 700 million dollars a year changing the name of the industry, characters, and the music and erasing people from “history’. However, IMO the book misquotes several Jewish authors and takes a lot of quotes out of context. Also some of the sources stem from anti-semitic authors.
The American Historical Association in Jan. 1995 issued a policy resolution condemning it. Even highly respected scholars condemn this book such as Dr. Cornel West and Henry Louis Gates.

What I would suggest is if someone you feel is posting ignorant comments on a regular basis then I think y’all should not respond back and just keep telling your truth. I think that most of Davey D’s readers know what’s up already and know that both of y’all are telling the real truth. And I think saying Hip-Hop is (Helping Ignorant People – Hurt Our People) is a disrespect to those who are making an effort to make things positive in our culture. It disrepects the legacy of Afrika Bambaataa and his movement (Zulu Nation) of promoting peace, unity, love, freedom, truth, justice, and havin’ fun. “I have a book I’d like to recommend for YOU to read by the author The Black Dot called “Hip-Hop Decoded (The Matrix Of Hip-Hop) which documents Hip-Hop’s true origins from Ancient Africa (Kemet).”
Ultimately, almost everything of historical relevance can be traced back to etiher Kush/Abyssinia/Nubia/Ethiopia or Kemet/Egypt. As far as hip-hop goes, a more direct line of succession runs through West Africa, specifically Mali/Senegal/Dahomey and Morocco/Cape Verde, on through Cuba/Jamaica/Brazil. Kool Herc’s Caribbean origins have been pointed out already–it’s worth noting Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa also had Caribbean ancestors. Breaking has its historical roots in capoeria, while graffiti goes back to Egyptian hieroglyphs. DJing/turntablism is a bit more complex, as technology plays a role, and the turntable dates back to Thomas Edison. You’d also have to give Les Paul as much props for inventing overdubs as you’d give Lee Perry and King Tubby for inventing dub. and as far as radio frequencies are concerned, Nocolai Tesla deserves a great deal of credit. Also, whoever invented the 808 gets a shout-out. yet it is a fact that the ancient Kemetians used sound vibration to erect the pyramids, and of course, there are similarities between the detuned sound of an 808 drum and an African djembe or indian tabla.. Beatboxing i would say derives from tonal poems found in ritualistic cultures among almost all peoples of Africa. So there you have the five elements of hip-hop.
As far as rap is concerned, it goes back to the African and African-American oral tradition, passing through everyone from George Clinton to James Brown to Jocko Henderson to Frankie Crocker to Symphony Sid to Cab Calloway to the African griots of history. So there’s obviously a difference between hip-hop and rap, and while rap as a practice may have preceded hip-hop, hip-hop as a culture preceded rap as a genre.
