We Remember World Aids Day-We Want Everyone to ‘Act Right’

Today December 1 2010 is World AIDs Day with its theme being Act Aware.. Last year the theme was Universal Access and Human Rights. With so many things bombarding us ranging from lack of jobs, unemployment benefits not being extended political strife and the latest Lil Kim diss toward Nicki Minaj, thinking about HIV and AIDs may not be top of mind… This morning we wanted to remind folks as to what’s happening..In many of our communities this dreaded disease is still impacting us in ways that are incredibly impacting. The leading cause of death among young people is HIV and AIDs. The primary culprit is lack of medical care and access. Here in the US the primary culprit is woeful ignorance. That has got to change.

First lets start with this song from Michael Franti called ‘Positive’. It was a song done back in 1994 and was proceeded with a request for urban radio stations all around the country to pay tribute to World AIDs day by giving a moment of silence. Sadly many of the urban stations in the big cities where HIV and AIDs was impacting us the most refused. Fortunately, we can share this ground breaking song here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rG94nBlcLYg

On a side note wanna give a shout out to West Coast pioneer Captain Rap who put out the song Bad Times back in 1983.. For many of us it was the first time we heard the word AIDs in a rap song. He talks about it in the third verse and how doctors were afraid to treat victims of  this new disease. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QPUazhwYdg&feature=related

For this World AIDS Day 2010 a number of high profile artists are staging ‘digital deaths‘ in which they log off line and won’t come back on until money is raised for the organization Buy Life.  They include  UsherLady GagaP-DiddyUsher and Serana Williams to name a few. The goal is to bring awareness to those in younger generations who are constantly being challenged by videos, TV shows and celebrity sex tapes that leave one with the impression that unprotected sex is ok.

For example, the recent sexually charged video by Raheem DevaughnSingle’ has everyone buzzing as he performs oral sex on a partner.  While its no doubt tantalizing and being widely viewed, one has to ask does it leave those who are young, sexual active and impressionable  with the wrong message that everything is a-ok with no consequences. The startling statistics say we need to raise awareness in a big way.

Below is a a video from Alicia Keys who is also one of the celebrities participating in the digital death series. Will her message be as widely viewed as some of the sex charged videos?

Facts About HIV and AIDs Every One Hip Hop Head Should Know

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is the virus that causes AIDS. This virus may be passed from one person to another when infected blood, semen, or vaginal secretions come in contact with an uninfected person’s broken skin or mucous membranes*. In addition, infected pregnant women can pass HIV to their baby during pregnancy or delivery, as well as through breast-feeding. People with HIV have what is called HIV infection. Some of these people will develop AIDS as a result of their HIV infection.

http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/resources/qa/qa1.htm

What is AIDS?

AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome:

Immune Deficiency means a weakness in the body’s system that fights diseases.

Syndrome means a group of health problems that make up a disease.

AIDS is caused by a virus called HIV, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. If you get infected with HIV, your body will try to fight the infection. It will make “antibodies,” – (chemicals that are part of the immune system that recognize invaders like bacteria and viruses and mobilize the body’s attempt to fight infection special molecules to fight HIV.

A blood test for HIV looks for these antibodies. If you have them in your blood, it means that you have HIV infection. People who have the HIV antibodies are called “HIV-Positive.”

Being HIV-positive, or having HIV disease, is not the same as having AIDS. Many people are HIV-positive but don’t get sick for many years. As HIV disease continues, it slowly wears down the immune system. Viruses, parasites, fungi and bacteria that usually don’t cause any problems can make you very sick if your immune system is damaged. These are called “opportunistic infections.”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylmmkQWd22s&feature=player_embedded

How is HIV transmitted?

HIV transmission can occur when blood, semen, pre-seminal fluid, vaginal fluid or breastmilk from an HIV-positive person enters the body of an HIV-negative person. HIV can enter the body through a vein, the lining of the anus or rectum, the lining of the vagina and/or cervix, the opening to the penis, the mouth, other mucous membranes — such as the eyes or inside of the nose — or cuts and sores. Intact, healthy skin is an excellent barrier against HIV and other viruses and bacteria.

Worldwide, the most common way that HIV is transmitted is through sexual transmission, including anal, vaginal or oral sex with an HIV-positive person. HIV also can be transmitted by sharing needles or injection equipment with an injection drug user who is HIV-positive, or from an HIV-positive woman to her infant before or during birth or through breastfeeding after birth. HIV also can be transmitted through receipt of infected blood or blood clotting factors.

Does having HIV mean you’ll die?

Testing positive for HIV means that you now carry the virus that causes AIDS. It does not mean that you have AIDS, nor does it mean that you will die. Although there is no cure for AIDS, many opportunistic infections that make people sick can be controlled, prevented or eliminated. This has substantially increased the longevity and quality of life for people living with AIDS. Bottom line, HIV/AIDS is not the same death sentence it was say 25 years ago. People are living long healthy lives with HIV and AIDS. The sooner you start to become aware and the more you know about the “virus” the better your chances are delaying the effects of the disease.

Conscious Daughters and Paris-Caught Up

http://www.guerrillafunk.com/mp3/all_caught_up.mp3

Do I have to tell everyone that I’m HIV positive?

No. Who you tell your status is your own business. They only people that need to tell are anyone you are going to have unprotected sex with. Not disclosing your status is punishable by law. Any person who exposes another to HIV by engaging in unprotected sexual activity is guilty of a felony, when the infected person: 1) knows he/she is infected; 2) has not disclosed his/her HIV-positive status; and 3) acts with the intent to infect the other person with HIV. The felony charge is punishable in the state prison for three, five, or eight years.

http://www.cdph.ca.gov/programs/AIDS/Documents/RPT2002AIDSLaws.pdf

How do I protect myself and my partner from contracting HIV?

Getting tested, knowing your status and limiting risk-factors for contracting the virus like sharing needles or having unprotected sex with other people, is the best way to protect yourself and your partner. Many health advocates suggest getting tested at least 3 to 4 times a year and more depending on the person’s sexual behaviors.

Can you tell someone is HIV positive just by looking at them?

No. A person living with HIV may look healthy and feel good just like you. A blood test is the only way a person can find out if he or she is infected with HIV.

Michael Jordan Responds to Lebron James-What Should I Do?

I like this spot.. Michael Jordan responding to Lebron James.. What should I do? commercial… I know its a mash up of a Nike commercial and ultimately designed to sell shoes, but the message is good and we should be inspired to do our own message type ‘commercials’ where wisdom is dispensed.. Its also humbling when you consider the over the top fan fare and hype Team Lebron subjected us to  this past summer with him hosting a prime time special to announce his new team..what say you?

Pittsburgh Rappers Bring Heat in a Mean ‘BET Style’ Cypher

P1250896Look I’d be the first to admit, I’m not a big fan of their football team, especially after last week’s 35-3 beat down against the Oakland Raiders. And yes,  while its true I seek revenge from the Pittsburgh Steelers, I am a fan of their emcees, deejays and producers.

Jasiri X is my homie. Paradise from X-Clan is inspiring.. I was always a fan of Sam Sneed and Mel Man who produced joints for Dr Dre and put out their own albums..   Kellee Maize is nice.. Wiz Khalifa is making noise.. The Burgh has been overlooked..

Here’s a recent cypher featuring; Jasiri X, Boaz, Kellee Maize, S. Money, Cynik Lethal, DJ Huggy. Perhaps they set it off for other cities to follow suit and do their own.. yes, Pittsburgh is in the building.. salut.

MC Hammer Releases Video Repsonse Directed at Jay-Z

As we mentioned last week, MC Hammer wasn’t feeling Jay-Z taking shots at him around his past financial  woes. Hammer promised he would expose him with a video response on Halloween night.

Hammer wound up alerting people to two of them. One was done by a Christian rapper named Bizzle who raised questions about Jay-Z and his use of demonic symbols. The other was put out by Hammer called Better Run Run.  Initially a lot of folks immediately hated on the videos which has gotten close to 70 thousand views in less than a day, but then that started to turn around. We’ll leave that up to you to decide.

It’ll be interesting to see if Jay-Z responds to either of them.

LYRICS
Look what Sarah Palin done started
A bunch of candidates with the intellect of starlets
On the surface they seem like they’re harmless
But what if they win and end they up in congress
The result would be carnage I’m just being honest
How high’s your education if you can’t name your college
I guess your resume needed polish
I’m you you not me that’s y’all witch
Look what at what they’lll do to win a office
Pour 100 million dollars down a faucet
Now that’s flossin but you cut cost when
Them undocumented workers you was bossin
And whose crazier than Michelle Bachman
And the loonies in that tea party caucus
Plus her wild eye ranting causes
More shame for Minnesota than all the texting Farve did

Republican Woman stay away from me
Republican woman you are so crazy

Don’t come hanging ya signs on my door
I don’t wanna see ya debate no more
I got more important things to do
That waste my vote casting it on you

Now woman I said stay away
Republican woman listen what I say

Dear God I wonder could you save me
Cause these republican women are so crazy
Like that Governor out west in AZ
Saying we got headless bodies but still come my state please
And she must have never heard of debating
Really, how do you mess up on ya opening statement
plus ya hatin made ya state look racist
The fact that your even governor’s amazing
It’s like they candidates don’t even know the basics
but if you watch em they use the same playlist
every time they see the press they skating
unless it fox news where they can do fund raising
if they positions not popular they change em
hoping Rush, Hannity and Beck can save em
They faker than wrestling it’s something to see
they even drafted the chick from WWE

5 Videos that Remind Us Hip Hop is Not Dead #2 From Eternia to Medusa & Beyond

Eternia

Canadian born Eternia has been making a lot of noise lately. Seems like every time she hits the stage she brings high energy and leaves an indelible impression. I love this song ‘Goodbye’ which is off the album ‘At Last‘, but I think she has harder material. For example, I wish she had a video for the remake she, Jean Grae, Rah Digga, Lady of Rage and Tiye Phoenix did of the Main Source classic Live at the BBQ. She aslo has a song where she uses the beat from theDr Dre / Snoop Dogg classic ‘Deep Cover’.  For this video Eternia writes its a tale of industry vs. art through the eyes of Eternia, wherein she learns to trust her struggle, backed by MoSS’s post-apocalyptic, end-of-the-world sonic imagery.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQxKzmi2fHg&ob=av2e

Say what you will about Nicki Minaj, but I love the way she flipped Biggie’s classic Warning. There’s no denying the girl can flow and her lyrics to this song are good as she gave us an insightful female perspective to this tale of grit and grime. Personally I wanna see more remakes of songs, just to hear and see the way folks flip them..

Pittsburgh artist Kellee Miaze remakes the Mobb Deep classic 'Survival of the Fittest'

Kellee Maize is one of the best kept secrets in Pittsburgh. Not only is she a dope rapper who always pushes the envelop with politicized lyrics, she also is a local promoter. For years she’s been the force behind Nakturnal which was space where female emcees could come through and let loose. Her album Age of Feminine is dope and an underground classic. Her latest one ‘Aligned Archetype‘ has been explosive garnering over 300, 000 downloads.

The video below was inspired by Mobb Deep‘s ‘Survival of the Fittest‘. She said she always loved the group and especially this song. She wanted to experiment and see what it would be like to mimic their flow and add her own lyrical take. The cut is called ‘Revival of the Fifth Sun‘ and according to Maize was hard to do. She noted its easy to write for yourself. Its a challenge to try to go word for word with the same cadence as someone else. She would love to one day redo the song with Mobb Deep on it.. Here’s her version of this classic.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcMVio4O9-Y

Medusa w/ KRS-One

The Queen of LA Hip Hop is Medusa. She’s the one who gave birth to all these emcees. Her reign dates way back to the Good Life in the early 90s when she used to step to the mic and destroy emcees to now where she still performs to packed houses all over the world.. In this video, she’s still repping as you can see with this live version of Cali Frame taken off her last album ‘Gangsta Goddess’. She is by far one of the most underrated and talented emcees around. She was rocking mics with a band long before the many who have jumped in that lane. Salute

Invincible

There’s not enough words to describe why Invincible is dope and such an important figure in Hip Hop for both women and the city of Detroit. This video captures the essence of who is she is-a community activist who has true love for the young people in her city. She penned this about her latest video;

After several months of anticipation, two of Detroit’s most visionary hip-hop figures, Invincible and Waajeed, are finally releasing their single, “Detroit Summer” b/w “Emergence”. The passionate two-song project is not only being put out digitally and in limited edition 7″ vinyl format but it’s also being launched with a powerful double music video as well.

This stunning visual representation of the songs was shot on-site during the historic Allied Media Conference and United States Social Forum this past June in Detroit. The video also documents the Detroit Summer Live Arts Media Project youth program, in which Invincible is heavily involved

Boots Riley of the Coup Stuck in France During General Strike and Riots

Boots Riley of the Coup

As we gear up for the 2010 elections in one of the worst economy’s this country has faced since the Great Depression of the 1930s, thousand of miles away, folks in France in our kicking up dust, shutting things down with a general strike, rioting and  and holding the line. What’s at stake is a plan to raise the retirement age from 60-62 yrs and folks aren’t having it. Boots Riley from The Coup is over in France on tour. He noted that he’s been stuck there due to the General Strike and has been sending us pictures and giving us updates on his Facebook page as to what’s happening. You can peep his page HERE

Boots posted this the other day..

General strike’s still growing. Gas stations running out of gas due to refinery workers & truck drivers striking. High Schoolers have been more militant than University students, w/almost 1000 high schools striking- many marched to Universities to get them to join. French govt went on TV saying they just learned from Saudi Arabia of an impending “terrorist attack” on France- so everyone should stay in!

He was later asked if he believed the French government and if people should be staying in..Boots responded that he believed the exact opposite. He felt people should be out in the streets. He later noted that dock workers got into physical confrontations with the police.

Here are a few photos..

French strikes..courtesy of Boots Riley

Boots posted the following observations:

The nation-wide general strike here in France is gaining momentum in the millions. Strike is against government bill to raise retirement from 60 to 62. Many trains are cancelled. High School & College students joined in. Refinery workers have joined and are refusing to release oil to distributors. The strike is against government bill to raise retirement from 60 to 62. This picture is from a couple of days ago in Bordeaux.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8m8zfrJEcN8

Boots also alerted us to what went down when he went to Carhaix, France to speak at a high school. The students joined the strike and walked out. The teachers will be following them today. Below are photos from that walk out

We’re hoping to talk with Boots later on today. One of the things we want to ask him is how are immigrant and African communities doing. If folks recall France was lit up on fire after police who are known to be pretty racist killed a Black man. For like 2 weeks riots unfolded with the French government blaming and later bringing charges on popular rap artists like Monsieur R for instigating the unrest with their political songs that called for harming the police. All in all over 200 lawmakers signed a petition against the rapper. Monsieur R was facing 3 years ion jail.

With this huge strike going on in France that has essentially brought things to a stand still, it would be good to know how communities of color are doing. Are the police cracking down harder on them?  Are they in the forefront as was the case in 2005?

In the meantime we should keep in mind how this strike has taken a big backseat on many mainstream news outlets here in the states. The few that are covering it, try to make light of the French for protesting the two years they want to add to the retirement age. Many ignorantly assert that the french are being lazy and want to live off the government  while neglecting to point out that they pay much higher taxes which is supposed to allow folks to get pensions and have a good quality of life. These Tea party types run around crying that they don’t want to be like France, while maintaining their own government benefits. All the while we have politicians like John Boehner who may the next speaker of the house pushing  to raise the retirement age to 70. While others politicians want to reduce social security.  Sadly far too many of us are willing to sit back and allow this to happen without a fight.

We’ll keep you updated on what goes on with Boots over in France and the Strike

Don’t Get Too Smug About Christine O’Donnell’s Flub-How Many of Y’all Can Cite Supreme Court Decisions?

There’s an old saying ‘Don’t get too smug that you wind up being the smartest person in the room-In the end that won’t win you very many friends‘. In other words be wary of trying to make others feel or seem stupid.  Be humble. Walk and talk WITH people. Don’t preach or talk AT them.

Thats a word of caution to those of us on the left leaning side of the room. Acting smug leads to us underestimating and alienating folks

It was hard not to think these thoughts when watching the Christine O’Donnell vs Chris Coons US Senate debate in Delaware that aired on CNN last night. Here O’Donnell was asked what recent Supreme Court decision has she disagreed with and she was stumped. O’Donnell couldn’t name one.

Now, a lot of my colleagues who are in the media or part of the pundit’s brigade took glee in her misstep. Many were quick to tweet about ‘how dumb she was’ and compared her to Sarah Palin who was similarly stumped when she was running for Vice President. Many are quick to say since she’s running for office she should know. ideally yes, I agree, but many look to see themselves in the folks they elect.

We saw this with George Bush and his ‘aaaw shucks lets have a beer’ mannerisms. Many accused an un-infiormed public of voting for President Obama without fully knowing what he was about other then skin color and our collective reaction to racial attacks directed at him.

If we believe what has been reported in the past we certainly know that many of the bills passed are not fully read by those in office. I caution folks who took glee in O’Donnell’s flub to slow down and not get too full of themselves. Her not knowing is not to far removed from the reality of the average ordinary person who works 9-5 and likes to think they stay fairly abreast of current events. Many folks look to see themselves in politicians and while O’Donnell is likely to lose in Delaware, what about other places?

Tea Party Candidate Sharon Angle is leading Harry Reid in spite saying a lot of 'dumb' things-Where are all the smart people?

We’re gleefully calling people dumb but may wind up losing all sorts of seats to ‘dumb’ Tea Party types. How is that happening if we’re so damn smart? Why is Harry Reid trailing in polls to one of those ‘dumb’ tea party types-Sharon Angle? Where’s all the smart people in the room ?I’ll await your answer.

To those who wanna sit back and smirk, I caution and challenge you to ask your neighbor or family member the same question. Heck ask yourself. What recent Supreme Court decisions over the past couple of years do you disagree with? Cite 3  without looking them up. I’ll wait.

Most folks are likely to cite the Supreme Court decision that came down earlier this year that allows corporations the right to pump unlimited funds into campaign ads. However, most including myself are likely to have to google to get the exact name and even then we better have some inkling because simply typing in ‘Supreme Court decisions’ wont get you very far.

Quick, is it People vs Citizens United? or the FEC vs Citizens United? Does anyone know who or what is Citizens United without looking it up?

Thank God for wikipedia. I’d venture to say that very few of us and that includes many folks in the media knew that Citizens United was a conservative non profit. Even fewer knew who Citizen United intended to attack, but was prohibited, which in turn prompted the lawsuit and the eventual  Supreme Court’s landmark decision.

For those who don’t know, it was Hillary Clinton. You can brush up on the case here.. FEC vs Citizens United.

There are many who are in media or political junkies who are up on such things or at the very least have enough info on hand that they can start a reasonable search. A lot of folks simply would not know where to begin, even with the internet at their finger tips. For example, type in the term Supreme Court decision and see what you get.. If it’s on Google you get the following sites:

http://www.supremecourt.gov/

http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/slipopinions.aspx

Christine O'Donnell not knowing the most recent Supreme Court decisions is not too far removed from the reality of most people

Try reading your way through those pages and come up with reasonable conclusions.  The average Joe or Jane is probably gonna call it a wrap and move on. Maybe our esteemed media outlets should spend less time telling me about Lindsey Lohan going to jail or Courtney Cox breaking up and more about important decisions made by the nine justices on the Supreme Court.

Again only the smug, smartest kid in the room is gonna clown O’Donnell for not knowing Supreme Court decisions. Everyone else is going to see themselves in her especially after she noted she didn’t know.

In addition I think most folks watching probably appreciated the fact that she noted how Roe vs Wade wouldn’t make abortions illegal, but would leave it up to states to decide. A lot of folks did not know that.

Here’s a brief breakdown

NANCY KARIBJANIAN: What opinions, of late, that have come from our high court, do you most object to?

O’DONNELL: Oh, gosh. Um, give me a specific one. I’m sorry.

KARIBJANIAN: Actually, I can’t, because I need you to tell me which ones you object to.

O’DONNELL: Um, I’m very sorry, right off the top of my head, I know that there are a lot, but I’ll put it up on my website, I promise you.

WOLF BLITZER: We know that you disagree with Roe v. Wade.

O’DONNELL: Yeah, but she said a recent one.

BLITZER: That’s relatively recent.

O’DONNELL: She said “of late.” But yeah. Well, Roe v. Wade would not put the power — It’s not recent, it’s 30-something years old —

BLITZER: But since then, have there been any other Supreme Court decisions?

O’DONNELL: Well, let me say about Roe v. Wade — If that were overturned, would not make abortion illegal in the United States, it would put the power back to the states.

BLITZER: But besides that decision, anything else you disagree with?

O’DONNELL: Oh, there are several when it comes to pornography, when it comes to court decisions — not to Supreme Court, but federal court decisions to give terroristsMirandize rights. There are a lot of things I believe — This California decision to overturn Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. I believe there are a lot of federal judges legislating from the bench.

BLITZER: That wasn’t the Supreme Court. That was a lower —

You can peep the exchange below

O’DONNELL: That was a federal judge. That’s what I said. In California.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQZbxm7ntf4

Now will last night’s stumble hurt Christine O’Donnell?  Probably not. She was already hurt because of her infamous witchcraft remarks which were made known to us via HBO TV host Bill Maher who pulled out the 10 year old clips.

To the degree that’s made her the butt of jokes and has wiped away her shine and momentum is very different then her not knowing the most recent Supreme Court decisions. Trust me I was one of those folks that had a field day because of her remarks.

But I gotta be honest, I was riding that pony with the hopes it would gain traction and slow her roll. I don’t want Ms O’Donnell in the US senate. I disagree with her political Tea party inspired views. The witchcraft flub is fair game. She can explain it away as being youthful indiscretion the same way President Barack Obama explained away his use of cocaine or the way former President Bill Clinton explained away his marijuana puff or lack of a puff.  (He said he didn’t inhale-yeah right Bill)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iWRw3oZdg4

We all know Christine O'Donnell, but who is Chris Coons? What do we know about him?

Lastly I cant say what’s what in Delaware but most folks outside its borders know Christine O’Donnell but most would be hard pressed to name her opponent Chris Coons without looking him up. Most of us would do so by googling her name and then reading whatever article popped up in hopes of seeing his name. While I can see folks not wanting O’Donnell in the senate what about her opponent? What’s he about? What’s his stance on issues? Is he progressive or another Ben Nelson/ Joe Liberman type?  Has he excited voters so that we wanna vote for him or are folks riled up and wanna vote against O’Donnell?  I’ll await your answers…

Something to Ponder
