Can We Trust SFPD on the Shooting of 19 year old Kenneth Harding?

Here’s a few stories and updates on the recent tragic shooting of 19 year old Kenneth Harding this past Saturday in the SF Bayview district… First we have our Hard Knock Radio coverage where we spoke to several witnesses to the shooting along with community activists. Folks we talk to in the Bayview vehemently refute the accounts given by the police who claim Harding shot at them. Witnesses we spoke to in the Bayview say that’s not true.

Others also want to know why we have not seen the multiple witnesses the police have laid claim to.. Why have they not step forth to speak? Why haven’t other news agencies discovered these witnesses and brought them forth for us to hear and see?

SFPD also claims to have found gun residue on the hands of Kenneth Harding. My question is what news outlets have independently verified this?

SFPD has recently been rocked by one of the largest scandals in its history

Some may ask why be so distrustful of SF Finest? Well as SF Film maker and Bayview resident Kevin Epps pointed out SFPD has already lost credibility with the public. Many have forgotten it was just 3 months ago SFPD was rocked with a scandal that involved dozens of felony cases being dropped because cops were shown on video behaving in unethical manners ranging from falsifying reports, illegally searching suspects, stealing from victims etc. What was shown was believed to be the tip of the iceberg and as results a federal investigation was launched.

If that wasn’t enough the scandal which was the largest in recent history of SFPD wasn’t discovered and ‘policed’ by the department itself. It was Jeff Adachi, the city’s public defender, and private defense lawyers who did the heavy lifting. Much of the scandal took place during the tenure of former police chief George Gascon who now serves as district attorney-Talk about conflict of interest. At last count a whooping 57 felony cases were dropped.

With all that in mind, there’s no way the citizens of SF, especially those in the Bayview can confidently trust the police are gonna be forthright in their findings especially if something egregious took place.

19 year old Kenneth Harding shot

It’s interesting to note that many who staunchly support the police while overlooking these recent scandals are hell bent on suggesting that because Harding had a criminal past he deserved to be shot. That’s wrong on all angles. As community advocate and SF City Commissioner La Mesha Irizarry pointed out, it doesn’t matter if Harding was the poster child for a chain saw massacre, he gets to have his day in court like anyone else. Police are not judge , jury and executioner no matter what. Even if he shot at them as alleged by the police, once he was taken down, medical aid was to be immediately administered. Police are trained to be first responders.. The graphic video along with witness statements shows the police didn’t aid Harding, they let him die.

Below are a couple of stories we encourage folks to peep including this one from Tiny Gray-Garcia of POOR Magazine titled
Killed for riding while Poor

We sat together: elders, youth, workers, students, and folks. We were on our way to a low-paid job, an overpriced university, a pre-gentrified home and a public school. There was laughter and shouts, murmurs and silence. Then suddenly, there were nine heavily armed police officers and fare inspectors walking through the crowded 14 Mission Muni line. One stopped in front of me and my son.

“I don’t have a transfer, I lost it,” I tentatively answered a cop who asked to see my paperwork as I clutched my son’s stroller and tried to see how close I was to the back door of the bus.

“We will have to write you a citation and you will have to step off the bus — now.” He was yelling at me and was flanked by another officer. I knew I couldn’t make a run for it, but I almost tried.

I thought of this moment when I heard about the 19-year-old man shot by the SFPD while running away from a Muni bus because he didn’t have a transfer in the Bayview July 16.

Shot and killed for not having $2 bus fare.

At a press conference held July 18 at the scene of the shooting, Joanne Abernathy from People Organized to Win Employment Rights made the point: “No one should be shot for not having enough money to ride the bus.”

Hip-Hop Activists Host Live Discussion on Recent Cases of Police Brutality

A Conversation About Police Brutality
Paradise Gray and Jasiri X Will Host a Live Discussion Online

Photobucket

Every week, a new story emerges of a local community rocked by police violence. These stories typically follow a similar pattern: a young man of color, alleged to be carrying a weapon that is never recovered, gunned down by police officers in a mysterious altercation that, too often, disappears under a mountain of police pressure and legal mismanagement. Taken individually, these stories are surreal tragedies; viewed as a whole, they reveal a disturbing pattern of police abuse and a serious need for a commitment to a 180-degree makeover of community police procedures. This conversation will be a chance for us to work together as activists and Americans to discuss ways to rebuild the trust between police departments and the communities that they are sworn to protect.

Martin Luther King Goes Hard.. Reps for Black Power-We need to see More of This

This is the Martin Luther King we need to see and hear more of.. I have the speech in August of 1967 when he talks about this to Black Radio announcers NATRA..But I never saw a video of it. Not sure if this is to the same body of folks , but its the same words.. King was feared because he was coming at folks hard and pulling no punches..

Pittsburgh artist Jasiri X deserves major major props for this incredible song and video that speaks about our collective pain and struggles..

Here Jasiri X tells the story of Jordan Miles, the 18 year old honor student who was brutally beaten by 3 undercover Pittsburgh Police officers while walking to his grandmother’s house. “Jordan Miles” was mixed by Diezel and directed by Paradise Gray.

Police Brutality at Pete Rock Show…We Must Connect the Dots

The situation that took place the other night at Tammany Hall in Brooklyn where NYPD went wylding on innocent concert goers resulting in the arrest and brutal beating of 5 people, including the daughter of the co-headliner  Pete Rock should serve as a stark reminder just how such incidents are  all too common.

Those who attended this album release party described the event as peaceful. There were no problems inside and hardly anyone was aware that an army of police had amassed outside the venue. From the looks of things what took place  was a deliberate and a gross injustice…

When it comes to the issue of  police brutality many of us tend to focus on egregious scenarios where people are shot 50 times as was the case with Sean Bell in neighboring Queens, NY or shot at point blank range as was the case with Oscar Grant in Oakland, California. When these types of incidents occur we tend to rally the troops, hold loud demonstrations and demand justice as we should… After all, the police are on the taxpayer payroll and have been granted much power and authority. With that comes great responsibility. They are are there to serve and protect, not terrorize and oppress.

With that being said, all of us need to bear in mind that police terrorism goes beyond questionable shootings. Those  are just an accentuation of the day to day humiliation, harassment and beatings they put down on marginalized communities all over the globe.

Pete Rock

Many of us are weighing in and blogging about this unfortunate incident involving Pete Rock should ask themselves, would we have been speaking on this if this didn’t involve a Hip Hop star?  Even more importantly, if we heard about this incident and Pete wasn’t involved would we have brought into the ‘party line’ hawked by the police that these innocent concert goers somehow caused the beatings? Would we be saying to ourselves..’perhaps they weren’t so innocent?’

If we saw a video of a dread locked brother who wasn’t General Steele of Smif-N-Wessun explaining that the police were out of control, would we have dismissed it and said to ourselves  ‘That n– looks like a gang member or some sort of thug..He probably acted ill or  said something and deserved the beat down’?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCDrQZ0rbBw&feature=player_embedded

It’s important that we NOT see what took place at Tammany Hall as something that was isolated. The beatings that took place that night are no different then the ones handed out to innocent concert goers at a dead prez/ KRS-One Katrina benefit show in Los Angeles several years ago.

dead prez

Here police interrupted the show by flying helicopters and shining lights on the performers (the stage was in a courtyard inside the venue). They then ordered folks to leave the venue. Shocked concert goers were greeted by a gauntlet line of more than a hundred officers who provoked and intimidated folks as left the event…Their rationale for shutting down the event was the same one used by NYPD when they shut down the Pete Rock/Smif-N-Wessun party..3000 miles away and 6 years later-there was supposedly a ‘fight outside’ the venue…

We’ve all seen and heard these type of stories before, so much so,  that we can no longer say they are  mere coincidents. They’re deliberate. Maybe its some sort of police training excercise where young Black and Brown folks are fodder. Maybe its something more sinister, where the cops are letting off steam and literally going on some sort of hunting expedition.

Chief William H Parker

Say what you will, but we know one thing, back in the hey days of former police LA police Chief William H Parker and later Chief Darryl Gates, they had a two fold strategy. One was to militarize the police force and make them an efficient take no prisoners entity.

The second was to make sure every Black and Brown male who lived in the hood had contact with the police before they were 15 to make sure that it was clearly understood who was boss.  Parker had a strategy of recruiting police from the south who at that time harbored prejudice and ill feelings toward Blacks. He was known for calling Black people ‘nigras’ and had an even lower opinion of Brown folks. He was LA’s longest serving police chief.

Darryl Gates picked up where Parker left off and in many circles was considered  even worse in his assessment and subsequent action directed at Black and Brown communities..It was under Parker that the infamous Watts Riots of 1967 took place. It was under Gates that the Rodney King rebellion erupted.

Rudy Giuliani

Why do I bring all this up? Because the tactics used by LAPD with Parker and Gates as key architects were held up high and adopted by police departments all over the country and the world. Folks in NY got a taste of this adaptation, when Mayor Rudy Giuliani took office and directed his police to come down hard on any person who committed the smallest and most harmless of infractions. His theory was if you crack down on the little things it will prevent the big things from happening. For many this was seen as a good move designed to make NY one of the world’s safest big cities. For many in Black and Brown communities it was an absolute nightmare. Once Giuliani took office, it wasn’t too long ago that one found themselves getting hemmed up by NYPD even if you crossed against a red light or

It was under Giuliani that NYPD put together their notorious Street Crime Unit that consisted of undercover officers who would walk up to people, stop and frisk un them to make sure they didn’t have guns. Hundreds of thousands of Black and Brown folks were subjected to this tactic. It didn’t matter if you had on sagging pants and your hat turned backwards or was wearing a suit and tie. There was a strong likelihood you were gonna get stopped and frisked by aggressive police who were given the green light to knock heads and take names and numbers later…It was this same Street Crime Unit employing Giuliani’s tactics that led to a young unarmed 23 year old  African immigrant namedAmadou Diallobeing shot on the front porch of his house 41 times by cops who were supposedly ‘trying to protect and serve’.

The Diallo shooting led to the disbanding of the Street Crime Unit, but it didn’t stop the tactics Giuliani implemented which had been drawn praise and adopted all over the world by police forces who feltl that aggression and terror are the ways to prevent crime.. It’s important to keep in mind that years after Giuliani has been out of office, NYPD as recently  as 2007 have stopped and frisked as many as 500 thousand people in one year alone.

We seen this type of tactic adapted with disturbing results in places like Pittsburgh, PA, as exemplified in the sad case of 17 year old Pittsburgh honor student named Jordan Miles.

Jordan Miles is a 18 year old violinist who played for First Lady Michele Obama

In Januray of 2010, just months after performing for First lady Michele Obama, Miles was on his way home, when he was subjected to stop and frisk tactics adopted by undercover Pittsburgh police who call themselves the Jump Out Boys.. Jordan fearing he was about to be robbed ran when a car pulled up and 3 large men jumped out demanding he give them all his drugs.. Jordan was quickly tackled as the Jump Out Boys, all martial arts experts, not only beat him senseless, but tore out one third of his dread locks.. Miles who had never been in trouble with the law, was told by the Pittsburgh Police Chief that he shouldn’t have ran, even though the officers didn’t immediately identify themselves.

Again this is all too commonplace.. It’s my hope that as we talk about and demand justice for what went down the other night in Brooklyn with Pete Rock and his daughter that we also push for systemic change. It’s my hope that all of us who blog, or have access to the airwaves not limit our outrage to incidents involving celebrities and rap stars..For those of us who cover Hip Hop, its important we remember the fans and supporter of this culture who are routinely at the short of the stick of police brutality incidents.

The Pete Rock that I know would definitely want justice and resolution to what happened to his daughter and all the others brutalized by the police..now dubbed the Monumental 5..He would also want this tragedy to not be inflicted on anyone else.

On a side note, it was not lost on me that this took place at Tammany Hall.. The history of Tammany Hall is a long and sordid one in New York City politics. It was a political machine for the Democratic party  which under ‘the Boss’ William Tweed routinely used violence to control elections back in the 1800s. It was also known for using a growing Irish Immigrant class to smash on Black folks.. Tammany Hall controlled NY politics up to the 1960s..

After seeing the attacks on African Americans the other night first thing that went through my mind was the violent history , but thats for another discussion at another time..

Pete Rock’s Daughter brutalized & Arrested by NYPD

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCDrQZ0rbBw&feature=share

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6qzWsNhJqw&feature=player_embedded

Just got this video showing NYPD beating down a woman at Pete Rock and Smif N Wessun‘s album release party..This took place in Brooklyn.. We sadly have seen this scenario before, where a peaceful gathering is broken up by police who as General Steele pointed out are bent on causing chaos..Such scenes routinely take place from Brooklyn to Oakland..

I’m looking at Pete Rock’s aka @chocboywunda time line on twitter.. He’s explaining that he came out and saw his boy being roughed up on the ground..He said he didn’t get beat up nor did his wife..but a woman did get beaten up. His wife was pushed over a garbage can trying to calm down their daughter.. Cops claim Pete’s daughter punched a cop in the face..

Coincidently this outrageous event went down on the same day that Oscar Grant‘s mother settled for a 1.3 million dollars with BART police for the murder of her son who was unarmed and restrained when shot point blank by police officer (Johannes Mehserle) on the Fruitvale Bart station in Oakland in January of 2009 … Mehserle is now home free after serving 11 months in jail..

I bring up the Grant case in relationship to the Smif N Wessun incident to point out that police feel embolden. They Feel they literally can get away with murder. If they can shoot and unarmed, restrained man in front of hundreds and get away with it, beating down a woman (in video they say its Pete Rock’s wifebut Pete says it was another woman..) is no big deal..

There are other videos floating around.. We’ll keep you posted on all this..

Is BET the New KKK? My Response to Dr Boyce’s Controversial Article

Just read this article by Dr Boyce called ‘BET Has Officially Become the New and Improved KKK‘..The title is no doubt provacative and so when I peeped it, I just knew he was gonna go in BET executives and raise the level of conversation.

I gotta say I was disappointed.. The article focused on Lil Wayne and his lyrics and how he had gotten the most BET Award nominations of any artist. There was no mention of the key decision makers.

I was even more disappointed when I peeped the follow up video where Boyce attempts to explain in more detail why he took shots at Lil Wayne and that he much he loves Hip Hop.

Its not that Boyce was incorrect in taking Wayne to task for some of his more unsavory lyrics. Artist are not immune to criticism and being challenged. But lets be honest, that happens all day everyday. People buy the albums, listen to the songs and express their opinions.. It was dope. It was wack. It gets 5 stars, 4 stars, 3 stars..

There’s an abundance of websites and blogs that put out album reviews. Lil Wayne routinely gets smashed on. He routinely gets praised.

There are also scores of radio shows where folks routinely weigh in on the merits of a particular artist. Conversations around Lil Wayne are not uncommon.

My point here is this…if  Lil Wayne who Dr Boyce says he likes and listens to everyday, needed to be publicly checked for his off color lyrical content, there was ample opportunity to do so..Dr Boyce didn’t have to wait for the BET awards to come down on him..

I feel Dr Boyce missed the mark by not calling to task and specifically holding accountable the ‘KKK-like actions and decision making of BET senior executives like Debra Lee, Scott Mills, Stephen Hill etc….Why not make them household names and encourage folks to push for them to change their ways?

We should know the names and numbers of anyone who’s actions are on par with the ultimate goals of the KKK which is to destroy and forever eradicate Black people. (Folks can peep the list of executives who runs BET on their ‘media room fact sheet’ HERE ).

Forget Lil Wayne for a minute.. Let’s find out why BET president Debra Lee (pictured left) allowed Lil Wayne the platform? What was her decision making process? Who did she have sit around the table and weigh in on the production of the show?  Are their standards that would lead to an artists not being given the exposure on BET?  For example, If Lil Wayne was an avowed child molester would he have been honored or would he have been shunned?

Dr Boyce noted that he called out Lil Wayne because of the tremendous influence he has on young minds. That’s understandable..At the same time we have to note that Lee and her staff also allowed singer Chris Brown to perform. The man who made headlines for viciously beating his ex-girlfriend Rhiana also has influence….We saw Busta Rhymes performing and he’s been arrested in past for assault.

By granting these artists a worldwide audience are equally harmful messages being sent? But really the lesson that all of us need to know both young and old alike, is the how corporate power works and its relationship to Lil Wayne, BET and larger Black community?

Hence we need to discuss whether or not an artist like Lil Wayne is yielding so much power and clout that he can show up at the BET offices and force Debra Lee (pictured left) or show producer Stephan Hill to put him on the air?

We should be asking does the buck stop with Debra Lee and her staff or does she have to answer to Viacom executives like Sumner Redstone (pictured right) and Phillipe Dauman who own BET?  Did they call her up and force BET to grant Lil Wayne a platform? In short who was really calling the shots and what do we as consumers do about this?

(You can peep the executives at Viacom which is home to VH1 and MTV over HERE . You can also peep the record setting amounts of money these Viacom executives make HERE. It’s a lot more than Lil Wayne..)

I liken the whole scenario to this.. If I was hired to babysit your kids and decided to show them x-rated movies, upon finding out my misdeeds who do you as a parent hold accountable? me the babysitter who presented the movie or the adult TV stars?

Lil Wayne put out a product which again, can and should be challenged but that’s the easy way out.. It’s harder to but necessary to take the fight to executives at BET who for whatever reason decided to honor not only Lil Wayne, but artists who are similar in terms of having questionable product.

I feel Dr Boyce should’ve smashed directly on them and lit a fire under their feet. Don’t let them hide behind the BET logo.Name names… And yes if the price you pay is these  BET executives don’t ever invite you back on their shows.. so be it.. No one said speaking truth to power is easy..

Why Does Safeway Support Animal Cruelty?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBR4FlrWVk4&feature=player_embedded

It seems like whenever big corporations get in the mix they have no shame in showing their corruptive, cruel nature. This is a disturbing video of animal cruelty captured by Mercy For Animals…They point out the horrific practices of Iowa Select Farms shown in the video are routine. ISF is one of the major suppliers of pork to Safeway and other grocery store chains.. In the video which was initially shown on KTVU TV these are some of the images you will see…Peep the KTVU story HERE

  • Mother sows confined to barren metal crates barely larger than their own bodies – unable to turn around or lie down comfortably for nearly their entire lives
  • Workers ripping out the testicles of conscious piglets without the use of painkillers
  • Piglets suffering with herniated intestines, due to botched castration
  • Conscious piglets having their tails painfully sliced into and yanked off with dull clippers
  • Large, open, pus-filled wounds and pressure sores
  • Sick and injured pigs left to languish and slowly die without proper veterinary care
  • Mother pigs – physically taxed from constant birthing – suffering from distended, inflamed, bleeding, and usually fatal uterine prolapses
  • Management training workers to throw piglets across the room – comparing it to a “roller coaster ride”

Yes I’m a proud pork eater, but after seeing this video, I’ll seriously reconsider my choices. I most definitely will not be shopping at Safeway or any other store that gets meat from Iowa Select Farms

HKR: Jean Grae Speaks Her Mind to Davey D ….Cake or Death

One of my favorite emcees is the one and only Jean Grae. Witty, smart and deftly skilled on the mic, she’s one of the few folks in Hip Hop I hadn’t interviewed even though we’ve run into each other on a number of occasions. Finally when she touched down in Oakland to a do a show at the New Parrish, last summer (2011)  we got a chance to chop it up. During our interview we covered a variety of topics ranging from how she got her name to the highlights of her career to her roots in South Africa to her process for writing songs and executing her artistic vision…We also talked about the upcoming release of her album ‘Cake or Death’ In short we did Jean Grae 101…

Also we gotta give Jean props for doing a great show and being gracious after I spilled the drink she brought me all over her…

Wonder if Anthony Weiner was Inspired by the Ying Yang Twins?

With all the madness surrounding the salacious antics of NY Congressman Anthony Weiner, very few people are addressing the ‘real issue’ at hand.

What would possess an outspoken, political firebrand like Wiener to send lewd pictures of himself and talk reckless to strange women over the internet?  What would possess a 46 year old married man to act a fool with no regard for his pregnant wife?

No one wants to say it-so I’ll say it..The answer is simple-It had to be rap music. Weiner was out of pocket because he’s been influenced by the large numbers of uncouth, pimpafied rappers who routinely grab their crotch on stage and talk about pimping women in songs. You know that’s what many of y’all was thinking.

The minute we got wind of Anthony Weiner sending pictures of his dick around, how many of y’all said to yourself, that poor man took the lyrics of the hit song Wait  (The Whisper Song)‘ by the Ying Yang Twins from a few years back to heart. Perhaps Weiner was influenced by x-rated hook that goes  ‘Wait Till You See My Dick’ ?

Me thinks our distinguished Congressman during his bachelor days must’ve frequented a bunch of nightclubs, heard the song often and decided this was the way to go about pleasing women..he must’ve said to himself; ‘Yeah thats the ticket.. lemme  send them pictures of dick.’

You know dude had to be listening to that song when he took those nasty pictures. The smirk on his face says it all.. Wait Till You See My…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYNQzqNqzdc

Anthony Weiner- As Nasty As He Wants to Be

And if not the Ying Yang Twins, perhaps Weiner was inspired by the raunchy explicit antics of the 2 Live Crew from back in the days.  At 46, Weiner came up in the era where their controversial  album ‘As Nasty As They Wanna Be was all the rage..I recall playing all sorts of cuts off that album for drunken frat boys back in the days. I wonder if Warner was one of those frat boys being exposed to nastiness.. I wonder how many others are sitting at home taking pictures of their genitalia thinking to themselves Uncle Luke would be proud as they reminisce about hey days of the 2 Live Crew..

Maybe Weiner saw Ice T in the documentary ‘American Pimp‘ and decided that’s the way to go. Maybe he thought to himself, Ice T is a real life pimp, yet plays a cop on TV and just renewed his vows with his curvaceous wife CoCo.. Weiner must’ve said to himself, I wanna be like Ice T and have it all.. wife, career, and continued freaky behavior.

Who knows?  Maybe Weiner was influenced by Snoop Dogg who once famously showed up at the MTV awards with women wearing see through clothing on dog leashes, talking about he’s a ‘real pimp’ even though he was married with kids. Maybe Weiner thought to himself, this how pimps do, send pictures

Here’s my point, first I’m being facetious by suggesting the over the top behavior of Anthony Weiner was influenced by rap artists, even though over the years their have been numerous campaigns launched from the now defunct PMRC to Fox News protesting explicit rap lyrics that might have led one to draw such a conclusion.

If anything, I think the debasing behavior of powerful men holding elected office is what may be influencing, not only the rappers, but the kids that many of these office holders claim to care about. They see or hear about a powerful Congressman like Weiner who may have held court with young malleable minds on occasion, sex-ting away like there’s no tomorrow and thought to themselves why not me? After all, its not like Weiner is going to be kicked out of office..

Its funny listening to how some people are upset that gay folks wanna get  married. They vehemently protest the notion stating that allowing gays to wed will somehow going to destroy the sanctity of marriage and set a bad example for future generations..

Family values man senator David Vitter

I say the the unsavory adulteress antics and  disturbing sexual tryst  displayed by guys like Weiner,  his ‘family values’  colleagues like Senator David Vitter, Robert Allen and Newt Gingrinch along with former president Bill Clinton (Monica Lewinsky scandal), former SF mayor Gavin Newsom (sex scandal with campaign managers wife) and Reverend Jesse Jackson (child out of wedlock) to name just a short few is what lays down shaky foundations for marriage and ultimately influences the kids and maybe even a few of these rappers who grew up watching them do dirt and still remain relatively unscathed. Not only are they unscathed, but in many instances they are handsomely applauded and praised.

It was just two days ago that a huge fundraiser was held for David Vitter . Him hanging out with hookers while preaching family values is apparently no big deal.

Newsom just got elected to Lt Governor of California.

Newt Gingrich is apopular commentator and is now running for President..

You don’t think young folks aren’t watching all this and taking notes?

We won’t even talk about the sexual deviant behavior of hypocritical TV pundits who routinely skewer the rappers like Bill  O’reilly (loofah sponge-gate) and Rush Limbaugh (Viagra/ Domican Republic scandal ) They paved the way in showing the world that being hypocritical is the way to go..

Should our kids stay away from the foul mouth rappers?  One thing I can say, to my knowledge I don’t think Snoop, Ice T or Luke from 2 Live Crew have been sending too many pictures of their gonads around.. I know Kanye did, but he’s always been out there… In any case the way things are going its these nasty ass politicians our kids need to stay away from..
