The outcome was something that is potent..Both men are on their game and show you just how powerful rap can be if we decide to use it as a tool for creating awareness and social upliftment.

Boots Riley of the Coup Stuck in France During General Strike and Riots

Boots Riley of the Coup

As we gear up for the 2010 elections in one of the worst economy’s this country has faced since the Great Depression of the 1930s, thousand of miles away, folks in France in our kicking up dust, shutting things down with a general strike, rioting and  and holding the line. What’s at stake is a plan to raise the retirement age from 60-62 yrs and folks aren’t having it. Boots Riley from The Coup is over in France on tour. He noted that he’s been stuck there due to the General Strike and has been sending us pictures and giving us updates on his Facebook page as to what’s happening. You can peep his page HERE

Boots posted this the other day..

General strike’s still growing. Gas stations running out of gas due to refinery workers & truck drivers striking. High Schoolers have been more militant than University students, w/almost 1000 high schools striking- many marched to Universities to get them to join. French govt went on TV saying they just learned from Saudi Arabia of an impending “terrorist attack” on France- so everyone should stay in!

He was later asked if he believed the French government and if people should be staying in..Boots responded that he believed the exact opposite. He felt people should be out in the streets. He later noted that dock workers got into physical confrontations with the police.

Here are a few photos..

French strikes..courtesy of Boots Riley

Boots posted the following observations:

The nation-wide general strike here in France is gaining momentum in the millions. Strike is against government bill to raise retirement from 60 to 62. Many trains are cancelled. High School & College students joined in. Refinery workers have joined and are refusing to release oil to distributors. The strike is against government bill to raise retirement from 60 to 62. This picture is from a couple of days ago in Bordeaux.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8m8zfrJEcN8

Boots also alerted us to what went down when he went to Carhaix, France to speak at a high school. The students joined the strike and walked out. The teachers will be following them today. Below are photos from that walk out

We’re hoping to talk with Boots later on today. One of the things we want to ask him is how are immigrant and African communities doing. If folks recall France was lit up on fire after police who are known to be pretty racist killed a Black man. For like 2 weeks riots unfolded with the French government blaming and later bringing charges on popular rap artists like Monsieur R for instigating the unrest with their political songs that called for harming the police. All in all over 200 lawmakers signed a petition against the rapper. Monsieur R was facing 3 years ion jail.

With this huge strike going on in France that has essentially brought things to a stand still, it would be good to know how communities of color are doing. Are the police cracking down harder on them?  Are they in the forefront as was the case in 2005?

In the meantime we should keep in mind how this strike has taken a big backseat on many mainstream news outlets here in the states. The few that are covering it, try to make light of the French for protesting the two years they want to add to the retirement age. Many ignorantly assert that the french are being lazy and want to live off the government  while neglecting to point out that they pay much higher taxes which is supposed to allow folks to get pensions and have a good quality of life. These Tea party types run around crying that they don’t want to be like France, while maintaining their own government benefits. All the while we have politicians like John Boehner who may the next speaker of the house pushing  to raise the retirement age to 70. While others politicians want to reduce social security.  Sadly far too many of us are willing to sit back and allow this to happen without a fight.

We’ll keep you updated on what goes on with Boots over in France and the Strike

Chicago Rapper Rhymefest puts his Hat in the Arena-He’s Running for Alderman

Its official Rhymefest is running for Alderman in Chicago's 20th Ward-Click HERE to listen to our Breakdown FM Interview

Can a Grammy award-winning artist who co-wrote the hit song ‘Jesus Walks’ for Kanye West have success in the political arena of one of the roughest cities to run for office? This is what Che Smith better known as Rhymefest will find out during the 2011 election cycle.

Today (Thursday Sept 21 2010) Rhymefest will hold a press conference in Chicago to officially announce his bid for Alderman in the 20th ward which includes parts of Chicago’s Southside, Englewood and Woodlawn. The area has a number of nagging problems ranging from crumbling schools to violence.  He  noted its one of the most violent neighborhoods in the city and is in need of serious healing, solutions,  fresh perspectives and new leadership that is on the same page as  the residents.

During our Breakdown FM interview Rhymefest noted that Chicago has long been a political town where things are rough and tumble and very  much in your face.  Say what you will about New York, the reality about ‘The Chi’ is if you make it there politically speaking, you make it anywhere.

He continued by noting  Chicago is a city that historically has prided itself on having strong organization. The way the city has long operated was not by who you are?, but instead who are you down with? and what do you all do?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lb0kccG-la8&feature=player_embedded

He said one of the challenges that has faced folks residing in the 20th ward and in many places throughout society is that there is now a lot of disorganized leaders, ministers and politicians which has resulted in disorganized communities. Rhymefest wants to change that. He noted that over the past few years there have been some high-profile incidents of corruption which has contributed to the disenchantment that many have with  ‘disorganized’ leadership. He said some of the long time leaders who have lost their way in doing so have created opportunities for new blood and new approaches to enter into the arena and be more accountable.

Rhymefest wants to bring about increased cooperation and open up the democratic process as Alderman

Fest noted that his bid should not be seen as someone  trying to get into office on name recognition or celebrity status. He explained in great detail during our recent interview the types of steps he intends to take to move his community forward. He has a concept called AIM.. which stands for address, implement and maximize. He said with each problem confronting the community he and his team plan to Address them.. Implement solution s and Maximize resources.

Rhymefest believes that many of the solutions facing the 20th Ward lie within the residents.  What needs to happen is opportunities for them to be part of the governing process should be made available and people should have a richer sense of ownership and better opportunities to weigh in on key issues.

In our interview Rhymefest lays out the plans he has to make this happen. He wants the community to be run like a Co-op.  On key issues that involve spending and allocation of resources, he wants the community to be able to vote on it versus having someone go in and get caught up cuddling with special interests and outside forces.  His job as alderman is to facilitate and implement the solutions the community puts forth.

Come 2011 the Windy City will garner the national spotlight not only because Rhymefest is in the race, but also  former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel is vying for Mayor’s seat now vacated by long time incumbent Richard Daley who recently stepped down…This should be a contest full of fireworks because Rahm is a take s no prisoners type of guy who recently held a fundraiser in Hollywood and will no doubt use his influence to have lot of big name people come into Chicago to stomp for him.

Rhymefest’s announcement has caused quite a stir with many within the music industry wanting to come out and stomp for him. The line up and camaraderie he has amongst Chicago’s Hip Hop community is formidable.  From Lupe Fiasco to Kanye West and beyond, iIf Che is able to inspire his folks politically the way he does with his music the Windy City is gonna be on fiya.

Below is a link to pt1 of our interview. Take a close listen because Rhymefest lays out a lot of info about what he plans on doing and why. We will post up pt2 on Friday.

Killer Cop’s Dad Unveils ‘Free Mehserle’ Sign During SF Giant Game-Oscar Grant Supporters Counter

Killer Cop Johannes Mehersele

Looks like the father and un-remorseful police supporters of the killer cop Johannnes Mehserle who killed an unarmed Oscar Grant in front of hundreds New Years morning 2009 will not let up. According to Indy Bay the father and Mehserle’s brother have hung huge ‘Free Mehserle‘ banners from their Yacht in the McCovey Cove which is right outside of AT&T Park where the SF Giants play.

The other night the Yacht and sign made national attention and enraged the community which quickly responded by sending out boats carrying signs calling for Justice 4 Oscar Grant.  Yesterday we talked about this on our Hard Knock Radio show and learned from our guests that when folks holding the Oscar Grant banners showed up, Mehserle’s dad tried to run his boat into their smaller craft.

What’s at stake here is that Mehserle who is facing involuntary manslaughter charges is scheduled to be sentenced November 5th. The verdict is seen by many as unfair and way too soft for a guy who has a history of violence both on and off the force. Many feel that Mehserle is literally getting away with murder. The fact that every single police union in California petitioned the California Assembly in support in addition to funding his defense where expert witnesses were being paid 50 and 60 thousand dollars a pop sent a clear message. The police although paid by tax payer dollars are not in step with many of the communities they serve.

There’s a reason why so many people of all backgrounds have taken to the streets in support of Grant. First, what took place that fateful night was egregious. Racial epithets being hurled at Grant moments before he was shot, police falsifying reports to cover up the incident, the men on the platform forced to sit there for handcuffed hours after Grant was killed was inexcusable. The fact that there were no police officers holding press conferences assuring the public what took place was wrong brought up painful memories for many who have been victim or witnesses police misconduct.

As was pointed out during our interview with organizers Rachel Jackson, Jack Bryson and Jack Heyman of the Longshoremen’s Union it should be remembered that  since the late 70s over 10 thousand people have been killed by police. Bryson pointed out the overwhelming majority Black and Brown men.

Since the verdict, the police and cops-can-do-no-wrong Mehserle supporters have held all sorts of rallies around the Bay Area in an attempt to influence the sentencing judge. The rallies are held as a way to show that the public backs Mehserle and believes his story that he accidentally grabbed his taser as opposed to a gun.

Most of these rallies have been held in the suburbs 20-30 miles outside of Oakland where Mehserle did his dirty deed. I guess they wouldn’t find a supportive crowd in this neck of the woods which again, should show you just how disconnected things are between the police and  communities they serve.

It’s interesting to note that the police have adopted many of the tactics and populus slogans used by activists to bring attention to political prisoners. At these often sparsely attended rallies, you will see signs that read ‘Justice 4 Johannes Mehserle‘, ‘Free Johannes‘ even the The System is broken Free Mehserle Organizers present the story as if Mehserle is the victim, even though he’s the one who did the killing and has  yet to personally apologize to  the family including Grant’s 4-year-old daughter.

The community responded to Mehserle's father Free Mehserle signs with signs supporting Grant

The stunt with the Yacht is pulled from the direct action playbook of activists who often find themselves shut out by mainstream media and resort to hanging banners in public spaces as a way to bring attention to a cause. What’s sad here is that the police already have tight relationships with the media. We saw that during the day of the verdict where reporters were mainstream reporters were embedded along with the police while everyone else including scores of independent journalists were threatened with arrests, even after show department issued press passes. The police had created a second tier of passes.

Grant supporters are not sitting back and allowing this to go unchallenged. In addition to dispatching boats of their own, there are a plans by the Longshoremen’s Union to shut down the port of Oakland this Saturday. As Jack Heyman pointed out, many of his members could relate to the Grant killing. They have sons and daughters who have been mistreated by the police. Many of his members have found themselves being hemmed up. Heyman pointed out that when their union was forming there were striking members shot by the police. Heyman wrote a great article explaining why the Longshoremen’s Union will be shutting things down this weekend in support of Oscar Grant. Justice for Oscar Grant! Jail for Killer Cops! Longshore To Shutdown All Bay Area Ports

There will be a big rally in support of Oscar Grant this Saturday at 12 noon in front of Oakland City Hall. Perhaps folks should show up with signs that read ‘Fry Mehserle’ instead of ‘Free Mehserle

The Rent is Too Damn High Party Resonates w/ Audience During NY Gov Debate

It’s gonna be hard to watch a gubernatorial debate and not have some one on the panel as outspoken and as colorful as Jimmy McMillan from the ‘Rent is Too Damn High Party

As I was watching this debate the other night for governor of New York at Hofstra University, I was glad to see that they opened up the event to all 7 candidates. This needs to be done more and we as a voting public we need to demand this..It would’ve been a oh hum affair just to see Andrew Cuomo and Carl Paladino. Well lemme take that back.. Paladino and his outbursts of ignorance can be entertaining until you realize folks are actually voting for him. But normally speaking, too many debates are corporate driven exercises where everything is scripted down to the questions. Very rarely do we have fireworks and real conversation. The excuse given by debate organizers is that there are too many characters who don’t deserve to be on the stage with the ‘real’ candidates.

When you stop to think about the so-called front running ‘real candidates’ who belong to the Republican and Democrat party are often characters. They play the role of being elusive, overly cautious and staying on message. The viewing public is left trying to figure out what’s truth and what’s spin. There’s never anyone else on the stage who can raise other perspectives and challenge scripted assertions. This needs to change.

Former Black Panther & NY City Councilman Charles Barron is running for Governor under the newly formed Freedom Party

What was good about the NY gubernatorial debate we got to see everyone. We got to see Brooklyn City Council member Charles Barron who was repping for the new Freedom Party. many didn’t know he stepped out and has tried to get traction for a much-needed third-party that doesn’t have to compromise. In short he gave folks something to vote for.

As noted earlier we also got to see Jimmy McMillan from the ‘Rent is Too High Party‘. He was the breakout star who was funny and provided comic relief of sorts but was at the same time, so right on point with his issue. In the age of Youtube we get to see how a debate should unfold and how a candidate should have passion for an issue.

It was also interesting to note how the NY gubernatorial debate was covered nationally. However in many places outside of NY the focus was only on Cuomo and Paladino.  This goes to show how a script is already written and being followed by Mainstream media.

Here’s some highlights..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4o-TeMHys0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TIGQhHGvP0

I think people should check out the Freedom Party. Here’s a good interview with Charles Barron..After Barron answers the first question there’s about 45 seconds of down time as camera person reposition themselves to get a one on one interview I wish someone had recorded and posted up Barron’s remarks from the debate. I couldn’t find anything on Youtube.

Folks who were at the debate noted that not only was McMillan funny but watching Cuomo and Paladino got hemmed up was funny. They weren’t able to hide behind handlers or pre-approaved questions..My boy SlabTzu DelFuego noted: ‘People who saw the whole debate laughed allot, not just because of McMillain. They laughed every single time Quomo and Paladino got rocked.

“I think I have more experience dealing with corrupt politicians than anyone else on this stage” – Kristin Davis former escort running for Governor under the Anti-Prohibition Party

“Trusting Quomo and Paladino to take out corruption, is like asking an arsonist to take out a fire” was a highlighted quote he attributed to Charles Barron

Glenn Beck & Alex Jones: Inspiration for White Supremacist 580 Freeway Shooter

580 Freeway Shooter Byron Williams claims he was inspired by Glenn Beck

Were Fox News talk show host Glenn Beck and 9-11 Conspiracy expert Alex Jones the inspiration for Byron Williams the 580 Freeway Shooter?

We sat down and spoke with Pacifica Radio investigative reporter John Hamilton about his story which first appeared on Media Matters called Progressive Hunter which details what led to the shootout in the wee hours of the morning on July 18th 2010 between 45 year old unemployed white supremacist named Byron Williams and California Highyway patrol last summer.

According to the article Glenn Beck and Alex Jones of prison planet/ infowars were key inspirations for Williams. On the night in question, Williams was enroute to San Francisco where he planned to shoot workers at the Tides Foundation which is an organization that helps distribute funds to left leaning non-profits and political organizations.

When all was said in done that fateful night 3 police officers were left lying in the highway injured. Williams who was wearing body armor had more firepower than the police who eventually subdued him.

Williams in his own chilling words said he was inspired by the attacks exposes put out by Fox News TV host Glenn Beck. We also come to learn that Jones has an even bigger influence.

In the interview below we hear clips from both Beck and Williams who is currently locked up in Santa Rita jail, 20 miles outside of Oakland awaiting trial.

We also talk about the leniency afforded to people like Beck while many others including rappers are shut down and material removed from public airwaves for fear of inciting violence.
This is the first of two parts
In the video below we continue our interview w/ investigative reporter John Hamilton who goes into more detail about the failed assassination plot carried out by Byron Williams.
We hear more about the influence Fox TV host Glenn Beck is having on domestic terrorists. We also focus on the influence Alex Jones had Byron Williams.

NFL Pro-Bowler Junior Seau Arrested for Domestic Violence Crashes SUV off Cliff

Junior Seau

Sadly this is becoming all too familiar, the arrest of an athlete or some other celebrity for domestic violence. Many were shocked to hear that former NFL 12 time Pro Bowler Junior Seau was the latest to go down this lane. Over the past year we’ve had everyone from Shannon Sharpe and Warren Sapp to Ben Roethlisberger get in hot water over alleged domestic violence and assault. Makes you wonder whats going on in the NFL.

According to police report Seau was arrested earlier this morning near his home in San Diego County. His 25-year-old girl friend called police the night before when the incident took place. Seau wasn’t present when police came to his crib. He wound up talking to the police and turned himself in this morning. His girlfriend suffered minor injuries.

Many found this shocking since Seau has a foundation that raises money for child abuse among other things. He’s long been seen as a pillar of the his community.

Complicating Seau’s arrest was him crashing off a cliff after being released. This took place near Carlsbad, California a few hours after he was released from jail. Folks aren’t sure if this was an accident or something related to his plight.. He is in the hospital recovering.

We’ll keep you posted.

TMZ has pictures of the crash..

Minista Paul Scott: Plies Why they Really Hate You

Plies: Why They Really Hate You
The Education of Algernod Washington
by Paul Scott

Like many of the commercially successful rappers coming out of the South, a release from Plies usually guarantees heavy radio and video play. However, I doubt that his latest release is going to be welcomed with open arms by the powers that be.

Last week, Plies, born Algernod Wahington, released one of the most thought provoking videos to come out of the “Dirty South” since the days of Outkast and the Goodie MOB called “Why U Hate ?” The song and video, which features the artist rapping with a noose around his neck , poses the question, “what is white America’s beef with black folks?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2Ber4-pfKI

Although the self proclaimed “goon’s” sexually explicit songs such as “Becky” and “Bust it Baby” have received heavy airplay, one has to wonder what reaction “Why U Hate ” will get from Hip Hop radio stations and video programs like BET’s 106 and Park . The concern being, it might inspire Plies’s fellow goons to begin to conduct in-depth analyses of America’s race problem. In other words, it might make people think.

Will radio play Plie’s socially conscious song ‘Why U Hate?’

The question that Plies has posed is complex and can be answered on many different levels. However, to get to the root of white hate you must go back thousands of years. According to Canadian writer Michael Bradley, in his book “The Ice Man Inheritance: Prehistoric Sources of Western Man’s Aggression, the problem stems from the hyper-aggressive nature that the European developed as a survival technique for coping with a frigid climate. This led to their need to conquer the whole planet.

Also during the Transatlantic slave trade the Europeans used the myth of racial inferiority to justify slavery. After the Civil War, according to WEB DuBois in his book, “Black Reconstruction,” Northern industrialists and members of the Southern aristocracy (the planters) manipulated poor whites into hating the newly freed “slaves” in order to exploit them.

It must be noted that much of the hatin’ on black people is based on fear. Dr. Frances Cress Welsing author of “The Isis Papers” has suggested that Caucasians have a fear of genetic annihilation; believing that eventually ,through the amalgamation of the races, the white race will cease to exist.

Also there is the fear of “the big pay back” where African Americans will seek revenge on whites for the atrocities committed against them. Over 200 years ago, as Bradford Chambers writes in “Chronicles of Black Protest,” Thomas Jefferson predicted that the “deep rooted prejudices of whites” and the “10 thousand recollections by the blacks of the injuries they have sustained” would produce a division that “would probably never end but in the extermination of one or the other race.”

Also, black psychiatrists William Grier and Price Cobbs wrote in their 1968 book “Black Rage,” “long after slavery, many whites are haunted by a vision of being oppressed, exposed to the whims of a powerful cruel black man.”

It must also be noted that this fear also influenced public policy, as during the Civil Rights/Black Power Era, FBI director, J. Edgar Hoover, set up COINTELPRO (Counter Intelligence Program) to prevent the rise of a “black messiah” that could electrify the youth. Which leads us to why “they” hate political Hip Hop, since it has the potential to convert rap fans into revolutionaries.

However, white America does not really hate “gangsta” rappers like Plies; she created them. What they fear most is Algernod Washington, the business man who is rumored to have been valedictorian of his high school class and a former college student; the proverbial “fear of an educated black man.” The Plies’s of the world are just thugged -out versions of Frankenstein’s monster who have been programmed to never turn on their masters.

That is until one of them is deprogrammed and starts making songs like “Why U Hate ?”

For most folks, Plies is an unlikely candidate to spark the Hip Hop revolution. However, the same might have been said about Detroit Red before he became Malcolm X or Eldridge Clever before he wrote “Soul on Ice” We must also remember that many black leaders from Abubadika Sonny Carson to Bunchy Carter and John Higgins were former gang members. Even one of the fathers of Hip Hop, Afrika Bambaataa was a gangsta at one point.

As Jabari Natur, chairman of Solvivaz Nation said “The spirit of Black Liberation is in all of us. ” This is a chance for something to blossom in the millions of people who will watch the video.”

What Hip Hop needs is a movement to raise what the late chairman of the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party, Fred Hampton, would call “antagonistic contradictions.” We must aggressively question radio stations who will play Rick Ross‘s “BMF” every five minutes but refuse to play “Why U Hate.” Since many DJ’s claim to play negative Hip Hop because “that’s what people are requesting” we should immediately start calling and tweeting radio stations, asking them why they aren’t playing Plies’s song. That way we can monitor the tweets and expose Hip Hop radio’s hypocrisy.

Perhaps this is a one shot deal for Plies and next week he’ll go back to being “the thug you love to hate. Time will tell.

But as Kwame Ture once said, “Every “negro” is a potential Black Man.”

I guess that goes for goons too…

Hip Hop Loses One of Its Dopest Battle Emcees.. RIP Eyedea of Rhymesayers

RIP Eyedea He was a beat on the mic

This has been a rough year for Hip Hop, too many have passed before their time. We lost Guru earlier this year. Last also west coast Hip Hop pioneers Mr Fantastic aka Melvin from the Bay Area and just last week Roger Clayton of Uncle Jamms Army.

Tonite we just got word that Micheal Larsen, aka Eyedea, who is down with the Rhymesayers camp in Minneapolis. The details around his death are sketchy. We know he was 28 and folks are saying he died in his sleep.

Eyedea was a beast on the mic. many of us knew him and his DJ Abilities. They put out about 3 or 4 albums on Rhymesayers. Later he put out a couple of solo albums The Many Faces of Oliver Hart Or: How Eye One the Write Too Think. But what really made Eyedea known was his battling. I recall him winning all sorts of battles earlier in the decade including Scribble Jam, The Blaze Battle and the Rocksteady Battles.  In many ways because he started making noise around the same time as Eminem, He was overshadowed in mainstream circles, but well known within underground enclaves.
