A Special Message to African-Americans about the ‘Illegal Alien Invasion’

Share/Bookmark//

I’ve written pretty extensively about the various attempts to divide Black and Brown communities over the immigration issue. At the root of this are racists who hate both Black and Brown but will conveniently show up and suggest to either group why they should hate and distrust the other.

Blacks are often told that Browns are taking away jobs and that gangs on the west coast are attacking us indiscriminately.

Browns are told Blacks are dangerous and will rob and kill them at any chance.  Many are told that they are harder worker and better assimilated then their Black counterparts.

Lastly many corporate backed individuals and entities will seek charismatic individuals and give them a platform to espouse backward and divisive views about either race.  These newly minted spokespeople are often depicted as sound leaders for the community..Divide and Conquer is the name of the game..

My man Carlos from DC  aka Carlos A. Quiroz has hit the issue of Black-Brown unity for a while..We first met during a Netroots Conference in Pittsburgh.. There we discussed the issue..and did a number of interviews..

Recently Carlos dropped a hard-hitting commentary.. He’s getting ready to drop it in Spanish..Here’s what he wrote:

This video is a response to questions and suggestions sent by readers of this blog and my Youtube subscribers. Please leave a comment if you want to add some ideas to this debate. I’m speaking based on my experience as an Indigenous man who have migrated to a Black-majority city.

We all need to know who is behind the Illegal Alien Invasion scare scam. We need to understand that we Brown and Black communities need to work together to solve our real problems, we must honor our common history of struggle for equality.

  1. ‘Illegal Alien Invasion’ ??? =))

  2. freetroit says

bottom line is the illegal aliens have been taught communism and want to implement the same system here thats in mexico. They have really no understanding of our constitution and bill of rights. Thats the real issue not their raza. However thats what the media wants us focusing on regarding this issue. Illegal mexicans if they really want to be here need to be educated on american laws and help us bring back the rule of law back here. However their communist views are given to them through our real enemis the bankers through their foundation funded mecha and la raza. My opinon is fuck your raza be about la freedom stupid bitches.

    • Thats about the dumbest thing I ever heard Freetroit.. The day laborer on the corner trying to etch out a miserable living knows nothing about Mecha, La raza and probably could care less..Go to a Mecha meeting and tell me how many people are even there.. I’m gonna look for intelligent remarks from u in the future.. I can’t afford to have the board cluttered with foolish talk..
As for the constitution.. You my friend could not recite the constitution or lay down when each amendment got added or how you would go about changing one.. You also have no understanding about the bill of Rights w/o having to look it up a wikipedia article.. So all this craziness of knowing the laws and bills of rights is something you and I need to be doing..

The fact that you mentioned communism in 2010 as being a main influence shows your ignorance.. Step your poli game up kid and stop making a fool of yourself..

  3. Marvin DeBose says

Great article and video Davey D… we need to realize that the power structure in America is the REAL thing that we should be worried about… not the immigrants… Who’s to say who should be in this country and who shouldn’t…. this Earth belongs to all of us… wasn’t Columbus an “illegal immigrant”?, weren’t the Pilgrims “illegal immigrants”?

  4. freetroit says

you censoring real niggaz huh you cant fade me davey d. I just tried to post up and it wont let me you scared dude.

    • U just posted.. stop whining and come with some real conversation not the bullshit u was pushing.. You played yourself by bringing up communism..

  5. loverboy says

    Daveyd,

I am from DC, but I have lived in Dallas for the last 14 years. My man, you are crtizing fasionmile for giving a not so intelligent response. However, in my opinion he is only reacting to an article to a not so intelligent article. Humans always blame the devil(the system) for their choices. I started laughing when I read your article. Had I never moved Texas, then I would be more inclined to agree with your article because I would be devoid of experience.

Brotha, let me tell you something, while I lived in DC, I never exprieneced any racism from our hispanics which consisted of people from Latin America, PR,DR. We didn’t have a large mexican community(although it’s growing now). However, there were tensions at times. Humans don’t always react well to that which is different. In any event, I must say that I had no problem with hispanics. However, when I moved to Texas I was shocked at the level of racism that I had to face. I went to high school in Texas and I highly doubt that the government or any entity had anything to do with the racism that I experienced. Man, I didn’t even know that as black we were called “monkey” as a racial epithet. The mexicans introduced me to that. They also instroduced me to other like “porch monkey” , “moon cricket” and etc. What did the government have to do with that. Come on man, wake up. Racism and/or predjudice is human nature(and yes it can be manipulated but it doesn’t have to be when the potential is already there). I became extremely racist toward mexicans until I did some soul searching and I realized that people are indviulus. I am not blameless with it comes to predjucie or racism. In fact, I have been predjudice against southern negros when I first moved to Dallas.
Look at Africa, you do know that a lot of the conflicts are tribal based. You got Baptist and Methodist, you have the Lakers and Celtics. It’s just human nature. As black people some of us a Daveyd, I am with you on Amnesty(it would be a tragedy to break families) and unity, but not black and brown unity. I am for human unity. Black and brown unity….lol…yea right…the last I checked since we as black people have been in this country we’ve never even had black unity. It’s called being human. Human beings are terriotial just like the animals. Should we unify with them because they are aren’t white, hell no. It should be done because there is a worldwide crisis of poverty. Once again, you keep throwing low blows in this boxing match which is illegal. Daveyd, these guys are not standing on a corner, what part of “they can get fake documention” do you not understand. Just the other day ‘pilgrim pride’ chicken was raided. So yes even major congelmates are hiring them. Once again, look at the stats when it comes to the average salary that we as black are making. They are affecting our community, especially here in Texas. Does that mean that we should hate them, no. We should work togheter to find a solution to this very complicated problem. Daveyd, stop trying to swept racism under the rug.

by the way….you don’t think that Mexicans stole land….only the strong survive…the mexican were weak and america stole their shit…it’s the same thing that they did to the Indians…they are still opressing indians in Mexico

    • Lover Boy come on man really..are you seriously running this story to me and then kinda justifying abandoning oppression?

.Lets take this story and rework the names and places.. When I lived in the Bronx I never had no problems until I moved to Oakland.. where no one liked my accent, style of dress and NY ways.. and I used to have drama.. I never knew drama until i went to cali..

or could we change it up.. My name is carlos and I lived in Monteray..where we never had problems.. It was all love until we moved to Houston and folks started making fun of my immigrant ways.. and the fact that we talked ‘funny’ and dressed funny.. We used to get jump by the folks in my barrio.. etc etc..

I could give you 15 dozen stories like that.. and at the same time I could give you dozens of others where the experience was good.. i.e.. in LA they have Black-Brown tensions.. but when I moved there I got nothing but love from by Chicano homeboys..is that enough to cancel out your bad experience in Dallas?

Second pt where the people given u a bad time mexican americans or undocumented? would it make a difference.. ? What if it was some white boys, or Asians or other Blacks bring the drama?

You unite around shared principles..lets not be naive here. I know there are quite a few Mexicans.. who say bad stuff about Black folks..I know some Asian folks who say bad stuff about us.. and I heard plenty of black folks say silly shyt about mexicans.. As the saying goes one monkey should not stop a show..What folks should be focusing on is system that oppresses folks..bad trade policies, racial profiling, economic pillaging etc..all that should be opposed..

Now on to ur other points.. In mexico indians are being oppressed.. Yes I agree.. i know that.. probably the same indegenous folks I see crossing the border illegally looking for relief.. The day laborer standing on the corner looking to put up drywall for 20 bucks half of which he sends back to his wife and kids is not the fool oppressing indios in mexico. he’s the cat being oppressed in mexico.. The ruling class in mexico.. the cats doing the oppression are not running across the desert.. They’re getting a vias and passport and doing business here in the US legally..

Do some come to the US with a prejudice? hell yeah.. As you know from traveling the stereotypes of Black folks being a scary group to stay away from when you vist the states is a well known import..They tell Black Africans to stay away from American Blacks..Sadly all those stereotypes are reinforced by BET and mindless rap videos that are shown all over the world.. I can tell you some of the most off the wall convos I had were in beriuit and in nairobi with Black and Brown folks watching TV and seeing us.. In kenya they were calling Black activist Colonizers.. because the stereotypes ran deep..

At the same time many of us came to Africa wondering if they had modern things. nairobi was just like New York except smaller.. I didn’t see no jungles or bushmen with spears.. I saw intense poverty and realized our policies in the US had a big hand in helping cause that..

Lastly fam u wanna talk about Texas.. I live in Texas half the time.. , do work in Texas.. have a business in Texas..TheSouthernshift.com I spend most of my time in Houston and in Austin..i work with alot of poor communities.. I see alot of folks struggling everyday.. Black and Brown..Thats what I see.. I see in Austin where white folks running the city still have one Black one Brown unwritten rule who can run for city council.. I see Black and Brown getting shot by police where the chief is Brown and the assistant chief is Black..

I don’t see Browns coming into Houston and running out Black people taking over jobs wholesale… What i do see are people who have long ties in both communities to various parts of the state. People have been living in Tejas for generations.. If we are being run out, please tell me exactly what jobs? low paying menial wage jobs? higgh end jobs? Tech jobs? Academia? Government jobs? Please fill me in and to what extent?

In Dallas I see lots of Black folks moving in from other parts of the country talking about how cheap the housing is.. I see the same thing in Houston.. I see conflicts sometimes between neighborhoods..but nothing that I haven’t seen before..In urban spots u gonna have urban drama.. How is Black Brown tensions any different then the tensions that came up when New Orleans folks came to town.. which was in many cases overblown..

Texas is a big place.. You go on the rio Grand side down to brownsville you can drive for days and see all brown folks.. Go over to beaumont side in east Tx and see Black folks all day.. Go up North see white folks all day.. My point is I don’t think there’s a one size fits all scenario to describe Texas.. What i do know is more than 30% are Brown and folks are starting to and should flex politically and with that should be something thast reflects their politics

  6. Grrr… this makes me so angry… Wanna talk history/herstory?

Let’s start with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. With that treaty, the border crossed my strong, well respected, affluent Mexican ranchero family. My family NEVER crossed the border. The border crossed SOME of my family, but not all. We were separated by an imaginary line of demarcation. We were not “weak,” we had no choice. Governments were cutting deals, the US calvary seized my family’s land and livestock… and boom! Overnight we became impoverished “Americans” while others in my family are “illegal” if they try to join the rest of my family in Texas. All we are trying to do is reclaim our families, our land, our political and economic standing… We have not always been impoverished.

Yes, there is racism between the Black and Brown communities in Texas. The wealth and power is so concentrated amongst the white communities in Texas that the people of color are clawing at each other for whatever scraps we can muster. Texas is hella backwards and behind the times… but if you look at the educational system in Texas, it makes sense. Diversity education is almost non-existent in Texas, communities are divided along color lines… but the powers that be encourage that. We need to be smarter than them… and continue pushing on with positivity and hope. It makes no sense for the oppressed peoples to hate on each other… united we stand. With enough people creating bridges and bonds we can change that. With more people of color vying for leadership roles and positions of power, we can change that. Do not use Texas as a temperature gauge for race relations… it is one of the most backwards states in the nation (second now to Arizona perhaps).

I fled Texas and headed to the SF Bay Area to surround myself with like minded folks on a course for social change and justice. When I go home to Texas, they all think I am nuts with my California ideologies. But at the end of the day, I know that I am spreading the message of tolerance, acceptance, and solidarity one drop at a time with every Texas visit.

    • Nicole I don’t see Black and brown communities in Texas backwards.. i see alot of folks fighting a good fight and in many ways doing well.. Texas is on the verge of changing up.. Give it a a couple of years..

  7. loverboy says

My point is that we cannot blame the government for all of the tensions that we have in our community.

I never said all Hispanics are racist. I never said that all of the Mexicans or immigrants are racist. FYI, I’ve experienced racism from people of all races. Personally, I have a hard time trusting white people.

It’s nice to know that you’ve had good experiences. I’ve had some too, which is why I am not racist.

You’re right one monkey don’t stop a show. If you noticed I’m not saying send them back. I’m saying let’s stop trying to make it seem like big brother is catalyst behind racial tensions, when the catalyst is human nature.

It is natural for people to discreminate, maybe the immigrant is an Idian and maybe not

Honestly, I went through a period where I didn’t like any race. People are people and everyone makes his own choice.

Are they going to steal all of the jobs, of course not. That’s not the point homie. But the truth is that they will affect our market as they have already.

    • Loverboy..human nature can lead to prejudice… My having an issue with you can cause me to act ill.. and if Ihave position of influence I can spread it to thers.. But polcy and politics create instituionalized racism which leads to wholesale policies..Its not either or its both depending on your level of awareness..

My understanding of how an unsound system works allows me to overlook the crazy shit gangs in LA are doing to Blacks and unite around the immigration cause.. The system in this case is the prison system which has an interest in keeping races divided as a way to control priosn population..I can’t allow some crazy shyt I know about in LA distort my analysis of whats going in Az.. Here the fight is not just about undocumented folks.. but it’s also about..Brown-Americans who are gonna be singled out..Thats what i mean when i say system..
Not having ethnic studies which is a policy/system decision may result in ALL of us growing up ignorant of one another because our media (another system) doesn’t alway provide that information for collective shared experience..And yes the market will be effected.. But you already read my solution to that..

  8. Cozmo Brown says

Since I’m in a hurry, I cannot put all that I’d like to at this moment, but had to speak my piece a little. Wow! I was in disbelief reading the comments from both loverboy and freetroit. No disrespect to y’all, but wow, y’all are prime suspects in playing out these divide and conquer tactics, that we have fallen victim to by believing and living them out. Sure there are tensions between Black and Brown, as y’all have experienced, but that is what Davey D is talking about. Is our analysis really going to be as simple, as I moved here, felt this, and experienced this from “them” and so they are the problem!! We gotta unify and that will take work yes, maybe it is easy to pawn off the problem on our easiest target, which is the “other” oppressed group, but that is a dead end way!! Yo, I’m Chicano, and proud to be Raza, indigenous, Mexican, or whatever else I may be viewed as, and I ally myself with Black folks and other oppressed peoples everyday all day! I would never talk down any other oppressed group or any other person of color! Y’all gotta check your analysis. Yes we are oppressed and yes we need to unify, and yes we can talk about American Imperialism, and divide and conquer, and about those that oppress us and divide us. Do we need to focus on the oppressors. NO, not always. Usually we need to be building with one another, taking responsibility and focussing on community, and working on US. US meaning Black and Brown, and other oppressed and marginalized communities! I know with all this nonsense going down in here in AZ, where I’m at, we latinos/Mexicans/indigenous peoples/Raza,etc. need Black solidarity, and I got y’all’s back too when you need me, as many as my Mexican homies and homegirls do here too. THINK ABOUT WHAT Y’ALL PUT OUT THERE!

  9. Gracias Cozmo for your words compadre.
    You speak the truth.
Keep fighting the fight in AZ…
    Stay strong.

    Did your family own Mexico?

Was it your family that lost this land?

Think about the words “our land”. What gives Mexicans the right to claim anything?

Isn’t that the same thing that A
    merica did?

You seem educated, therefore, You are aware that throughout the history of man things like this have always taken place?

Was the Mexico that your family was familiar with obtain the land by making an agreement with local Indian tribes or did they obtain the land by the same force and deception that every country has used?

If Mexico recieves the land back should they be allowed to enjoy American prviliges or should we hand it over to Mexico and see just how much they can fuck it up?

    STOP BRINGING RACE INTO THIS!

There are more whites struggling in Texas than blacks and Mexicans combined!

I generally don’t like Texas white people much myself!

There are plenty of wealthy mexicans who have taken advantage of the vast oppertunities that Texas has to offer, trust me I own my own business.

I never said that Texas is a microcosm of the rest of the country!

Mexico was weak and they lost the land. If they weren’t weak then why didn’t they defeat the Americans in the same manner as they did the French.

Lands and people are conquered all of the time sweetheart! If your people are going to reclaim it, then good for yall. I could careless, I don’t own this country.

But you, daveyd and whoever, need to cut out this bullshit about the helpless and harrassed Mexican.

Daveyd makes it seem like having more Hispanics in office is something that we should look forward to….lol…very funny…If they run it properly then cool…but if they run that shit the way they do south of the border…i’m running for the hills.

    @Daveyd,

you cannot even answer my questions.

How can America accept others when it hasn’t even dealt with it’s own poverty class?

Tell me it won’t create more poverty!

for the record Daveyd, America is a victim of a larger system. However, it is just the premier country. America is a victim. Hell our industries are struggling.

  11. loverboy says

    cozmo and Daveyd

I am for unity. But for all races, not just black and brown.

I am for the cause. I am for amnesty. I am for creating programs to create jobs in Mexico….oopps…GM already did that…

I have never seen anything that has influened my attitude towards illegal immigration. I told you that i’ve had a change of heart and I refuse to be racist based on few idiots that I’ve encountered. I forgive them truely, for they only spoke from stupidity. I’ve got love for all races.

what about Mexican Imperialism, Japenese Imprialism, Chinese Imperialism. It’s bigger than America. Yall are educated so you know about the fedreal reserve and the world bank. America is the Federal reserve’s bitch.

Yall talk as if we are balling here in America. That’s some bullshit. Most of us can barely eat, and this is after working 40 hours a week.

so some of it may be from the government, while some of it comes from their home training and/or self imposed stupidity. Either way it’s going to happen.

Lord would have it i’m in Texas at the moment, visiting fam before I move to Harlem at the end of the month. I been here three weeks. Having lived in East Coast cities all my life It isn’t what I thought as far as bad vibes and racism from whites or Mexicans. I mean I came down with my game face on, figuring I would have to knock somebody out and then figure how to boggie out before the cops come and give me 24 years for a fist fight, or making somebody eat their knife. Not like that at all. I’m in Corpus Christi. Mexicans are the majority, most of them are at least 3 generations deep. I suppose if you just hop the border you really don’t want to stop so close . Down here it’s like an easy does it mentality. Everybody seems to be in a cooperative mood. The Mexican cats got a sense of humor that is like funny to the bone. I play my numbers at the store and hang about and talk if they not busy. Granted I’m in the suburban part and not the hood where the people are probably just as desperate and agitated as in hoods everywhere. I watch they news the barrio has it’s battle zone moments, but the Mexican cats around here is like secure, like they can’t be touched. They got status.

I’ve always studied and figured to supported La Raza, the struggle is global, so I guess it’s good karma coming back. It’s been respect for respect. It was the same way when I stayed a month out Boyle Heights two summers ago. They where quick to figure what my business was, then it was cool. I got a couple double takes being the darkest thing in sight, but there was no disrespect.

Everybody has their assholes but with the Mexicans it’s mostly about how you carry yourself by my experience. They just won’t zap out on you. they’ might see where your head is at though, especially is you “dressed hard.” I mostly where Dickie shorts, and black wife beaters when it’s hot, wit my Ravens cap backwards. I got tested the other day.

I was in this store in line, and a younger Mexican cat all tatted up came up and asked me a question. I gave him a short answer. He keep looking at me, like I know you ain’t from around here; talk to me. So I asked him a question. Then he said one of them funny Mexican one liners. I laughed, gave a reply, he said a closer and stepped back. Now, if you an old cat, or squared up they won’t pay you know mind at all unless you give them a reason to.

As far as this great early 21st century run for the border, all of American history is recent in God’s time, and for every action there is a counter action. Americans came to their lands, outnumbered them and gained socio-political control and redrew the borders. They was guest at first. Now guess what. Blacks should let it play and don’t hate. We got other issues.

  20. flavorblade says

I was during some research on Cesar Chavez. He was a great labor leader and fighter for equality. However I wonder what Mexicans would think of him now if he stayed the same politically. During his time he was against illegal immigration. He felt it hurt the cause of fair wages, because the illegals were willing to work for anything, and there were people happy to oblige them. He even went as far as to report undocumented workers to the government. The government gave Cesar awards. He has a holiday in his honor, which is a great thing, but it also let’s me know he was sort of mainstream,. The government gives awards to Martin Luther King’s, not Malcolm X’s. Cesar died in 1993. Shortly after during the mid to late 90’s the great run for the border began. If Cesar stayed the same the conversation about him would be a little different on the Mexican side of the border.

Hey Pablo you going to make it for the border?
    You know it.
That Cesar Chavez is a big man now all decorated. They say he can be a senator or something. In charge of labor for the Americanos.
    Si he’s a regular Peacock.
Si, he says we need to wait here and enter with the paperwork. That could take years.
Yeah he’s tripping out, fuck him we look like Haitians. This was all our land. It’s not about the country any more, it’s about the land and the opportunity on it.
Si, padre, Cesar Chavez needs to retire.
    Si, maybe by unknown causes.

    • I think Cesar Chavez like King were great men.. even if they supported policies and took positions that many didn’t agreed upon..Anti-Immigrant foes who like to toss up Ceasar chavez’s position on immigration are no different than the right wing zealots who like to quote King or the fake Bible thumpers who like to scripture.. There’s always a context that shaped their position..

Cease was fighting for a decent and safe working conditions as well as wages and to the degree that exploitative farmers would hire a desperate population to undermine Cesar resulted in him taken a hardline stance on illegal immigration.. His concern was economic parity which is not the same as social and political dominance which are the main MOs for many who are anti-immigrant…

If jan brewer and Russell Pearce were really about the people.. they would’ve been fighting for legislation that made sure anyone working in the fields got paid a decent living wage.. People like them would’ve been marching with Cesar and others to ensure that being a field hand was just as attractive as working in corporate office.. Instead, many of those folks were against Ceasr Chavez in his fight.. If anything they turned a blind eye and allowed undocumented folks to come in for the sole purpose of undermining Chave’z work..

Now that time has passed and that ‘illegal’ work force has grown and has the potential to be major political and social force, folks are all up in arms ready to get rid of them and then quoting from a man who they politically oppose on every key issue that he’s known and admired for..

Today i think Cesar would be working to demand those same decent wages and parity with those who newly arrived. He would not have been turning his back on his people. Nor would he be in support of inhumane treatment. His thing would be strictly u can’t undermine the work that were doing..and in many ways they should not.. This is why I said in earlier posts we all have a responsibility in this.. As long as I buy product on exploited labor than I’m just as guilty as the man who came here undocumented and the company that hired him..
