A few months ago I sat on a panel at Harvard where we discussed the global impact of Hip Hop. There was lots of discussion about what folks are doing in Japan and Australia. We talked a bit about the major inroads made in places like Germany and France. Hip Hop on the continent of Africa was discussed. There was no denying just how widespread this culture born in the ravaged ghettos of the South Bronx had become.

During the discussion I noted that for us in the United States, while it was great to know about Hip Hop icons halfway across the world, in order to really appreciate the global reach of this culture perhaps we should start knowing about our Brown skinned neighbors next door and to the south of us in Mexico and throughout South America. I had always found it troubling that a professed Hip Hop head knew about artists in Canada but couldn’t name one from Mexico which has way more people.

I was always surprised that people knew about Snoop, Game and Dr Dre in Cali, but didn’t know about the equally large Hip Hop scene amongst Chicanos.

People know about Paul Wall, Chamillionaire and UGK in Texas, but many didn’t realize there has long been a Hip Hop exchange amongst Texans and heads in Monterey.

As Afrika Bambaataa likes to point out, those who hold up the mantlepiece of Hip Hop in corporate America have done us a disservice because they have segregated the music and in their quest to ‘do business’ they have distorted and omitted major parts that have been important to its build up. People like to say Hip Hop is worldwide in their radio station sales pitches but never reflect that variety and vibrancy on its day to day playlists.

When we talk about Hip Hop one of the key architects are those who see themselves as Latino. From day one our Brown brothers and sisters were on the ground floor plugging away and helping elevate the culture.-From grafitti to deejaying to dancing to emceeing Latinos have made an indeligible mark in Hip Hop that many have built upon. It may have been folks like Prince Whipper Whip of Fantastic Romantic 5 busting serious flows during Hip Hop’s pioneering days. It might have been DJ Charlie Chase or Disco Wiz holding it down on the turntables or pioneering figures like JoJo, Crazy Legs or Popmaster Fable wrecking shop on the dance floor.

On this special 2 part 25 Joints to Get U through the Day we decided to go digging in the crates and turn you on to some Hip Hop’s dopest emcees who just happen to come from the Brownside of town..

  4. You beat me , i intended to do something like that as i bought some stuff by Brownside, Funky Aztecs and have some Delinquent Habits, Mexakinz, LSOB, Mr Shadow..already…

    • Damn Saul Daniel..u make me hold my head in shame, I forgot Brownside and Funky Aztecs.. and those are my peeps.. Oh snap deliquent Habits and Mellow man Ace,..oh man my boy carlos.. from hayward I forgot him.. Cisco from frisco..aaarrgh.. fam you have to step up and do this cause I missed a few folks…There’s plenty to go around.. I didn’t beat you.. I just warmed things up.. I put runners on first and second base now its on you to follow up and drive it home…. I need u to do that otherwise I’m gonna have some homies heated with me 🙂

  5. While “chicano rap” does instill as sense of pride in brown folks looking for reflections of themselves in this music we love, I think the term “Chicano Rap” has become a industry driven machine/moniker that has overshadowed many brown youths understanding of the brown influence on hip hop culture over all.

In the worst cases the hyper gangsterized songs-attempt to alienate the music from its roots in black music -perpetuating the divide in conquer, brown vs. black in our communities in very real ways…. not to mention the (sometimes false) glorification of the gang deathstyle and the unchecked oppression of our own brown women.

in terms of the music, whats worse is… by isolating in this way many of these Chicano/a emcees escape the responsibility/potential of having skills,i.e: dope lyrics, style, stage presence, battling, freestyling, songwriting…. Perhaps many skilled Chicano emcees feel pressured to fall in line with stereotypes as a means of achieving success in the “Latino Market”… this is unfortunate because their growth as artists/people is stunted by market forces. All the greatest emcees – like great people- transform and evolve as they create art- it is in this tension/struggle that great(and lasting) hip hop is born.

But I digress…These are dope mixes that both affirm and demonstrate the diversity and multiplicity of chicano/a emcees. Big ups to davey D. The link to this mixtape is down is there anyway to hear or download it still?

    peace,

    Beto

  6. Yeah , you definatly need to put some Funky Aztecs on your list and what about some 17 Reasons, Dark Room/Sir Dyno,GUN. That Immortal Tech jam is aiight but you should have put up Dance With The Devil that shit is deeep.
No disrespect man, just a few suggestions.
Good to see The Mexakanz on your list. I haven’t heard them in years.

  7. Viva La Raza 1

  8. Noreaga, Pun , beatnuts,

  9. Latino Pride says

Good Music but were are the Heavy Hitters of the Underground Latino from California Like E-LEGAL, ROW WEST, LA COSA NOSTRA, CODE BLUE, DJ WARLOCK ONE ETC all this Artists have been making noise in L.A. the Bay and pats of Mexico and South America with a Hard line of Revolutionary Hip Hop in Spanish. Maybe for part 3. Peace

    • Thanks for the heads up on the groups some I heard, others I haven’t.. but overall the answer is simple.. 1-had more groups than I could fit and many of the people featured are from california where I live.. 2-tape wasn’t meant to be a be all end all, but something I wanted to do since many of the people featured our friends and I saw they weren’t getting too much love especially outside of these little silos the industry had put them in..
drop me a note on the website.. so I can maybe get a few mp3s.. there’s definitely room for pt3

      Peace..

  10. How has being a parent changed you?
