ChuckD-performing-150Lots of people have been weighing in on the passing of Michael Jackson. Even more have been weighing in on on what a proper tribute looks like in the aftermath of the BET Awards fiasco. One person who has stepped to the plate is music icon Chuck D of Public Enemy. he sent out this video the other day of his own tribute to Michael jackson. He explained that he took some time out and put this together on I Movie. It underscored my questions-Where was the simple video montage from BET?

Also included in this story is a video of Chuck D talking about the importance of music that was released during the Civil Rights struggle..

Enjoy and pass along…

Below is the video of Chuck D talking about the importance of  music during the Civil Rights Struggle.

  1. Best tribute I’ve seen so far… simple and sincere…

  2. Robert Jr. James McClendon says

Only question is “Was this an after the fact video or was it done in three days?” Excellent video, but I question with all these great tribute videos, why were none donated to BET? Just asking. HInd sight is 20-20. Good tribute Chuck D, but you need to be talking to your protegee Flavor Flav about his image in our struggle, as well. Peace!

  3. Beautiful, simple, and concise. To briefly address the remarks from Mr. McClendon, Chuck has spoken to Flavor about his situation and the bottom line is this…Flavor is his own man and is responsible for his own actions.

As far as donating to BET, yeah right. BET board of standards is the same board of standards for MTV and VH1. They are owned by the same parent company.

MTV wouldn’t air PE’s “Gotta Give the Peeps” video because Chuck said “Free Mumia and H. Rapp Brown” yet they would air videos showing degrading images of women, black on black crime, and drug dealing.

MTV, VH1, and BET are not interested in Chuck D or what he has to say. Unfortunate but true.

  4. What a beautiful and inspiring tribute to MJ. We forget that MJ survived 50 years of exploitation by his father, producers, promoters and mega media. Let’s celebrate the sharing of his life’s journey with us, learn from his lessons and make it our business to protect the spirit and energy of our people.

  5. Our house has been grieving the loss of this legend all week. The grief has taken many turns from shock, to numbness, to obsessively wanting to know more facts, to listening to famous folks comment on the meaning of his loss and his contribution to society. He was complex in his simplicity. He was a perfectionist, a trailblazer, a genius, and man of extremes, showing the world the residual pain of his childhood in ways that left us struggling to comprehend his actions.

But last night we all cried, said our blessings, and finally understood that Michael is GONE…joining our ancestors before him.

We reviewed how personally this music touched our lives. We grew up and learned about life with his music in the background. The music was pure, positive and a celebration of life. Something to be shared with my children without editing.

We give thanks that we are of a generation to have witnessed him and other legends that have contributed so much amazing music. Michael’s music nourished us, and encouraged us in our difficult times, and helped us celebrate in happy ones. Most importantly, it went beyond race, class, age, and religion. His music unified, and created.

Thanks to those of you who have gone beneath the story, and helped us understand Michael with empathy, and remember the barriers he broke. Thanks for staying away from the Reality Show mentality and allowing us a positive place to share our thoughts, feelings, appreciation and to honor the legend that was and is.

  6. Chuck D. I think what you are doing for our beloved Michael Jackson is incredible. Beautiful,.Please keep it coming. We need to feel the love of Michael Jackson. He meant so much to so many and did so much for people of all race but mostly for African-American’s opening doors that otherwise was closed, shut tight. Michael memories and the things he has accomplish and achieved in life must live on and he must not be forgotten. That why we are left behind, to see that Michael Joseph Jackson… Jax as you call him, keep hope alive. I just wanted to say thank you, I respect you and I love you man… Peace out!
